Dacron is a must have for all seat cushions! PLEASE READ! Dacron makes your cushions softer, fills corners and gives the cushion a nice crown instead of looking flat! When using Polly Dacron it is suitable for both indoor and outdoor cushions. Make your cushion cover to fit the foam before you add the Dacron! DO NOT make an extra sewing allowance! The purpose of Dacron it to over stretch and fill the cushion and adding additional sewing allowance will defeat the purpose.
Here is my Amazon affiliate link to recommend Dacron, spray glue and stapler.

Spray glue: amzn.to/3T6M9XV
Stapler: amzn.to/3CEL96q

Scott, thank you so much for so useful tips! Your cushions are PERFECT with beautiful pattern matching details on the sides, so professionally done! I bought L shape bench without cushions for my kitchen and going to make cushions myself, so watched so many videos to learn the best way to do my project. I know, cushion with a zipper will be time-consuming for me and stressful. So, I end up with the idea to cut plywood on the bottom and upholstered it. About foam, you are so right! We bought chairs and cushions almost flat after 3 years of use! Thank you again for the useful tips!

Thank you very much for this great tip on using Dacron to use on the cushions! I certainly appreciate learning about what and how to do this properly. Also I don’t know much about fabrics and types of foam to use on a project such as this. I can see where adding the Dacron might make it more comfortable to sit on as well as the appearance of the cushions. 👍👍👍

If you want to make the process of stuffing Dacron-covered foam easier than you ever thought possible, go to a home improvement store and buy 3M masking film. This is a very thin plastic that painters use to protect windows and such when spray painting. Wrap the foam/Dacron with the film and secure it with masking tape. The film keeps upholstery material from grabbing the Dacron, so it easily slides into place. Then reach into the cover and pull the film out. If you’ve ever wrestled with this process, you will be amazed how much easier this method is.

Can you use cling film instead ?
@thardyryll
@thardyryll Ай бұрын
@@markveganism50033M’s masking film naturally clings due to static electricity but is plenty slippery enough to slide away from upholstery materials. If any other film actually clings (some of it is pretty sticky) then I would use it. A 48-inch roll (180 feet long) of 3M’s is only $17 on Amazon, and has many uses.

I didn’t have a stapler so I used a needle with thread and did a long whip stitch and then sewed a permanent muslin cover as he stated, it made them so much easier to slid into the case without bunching up the Dacron when I took them off a few times a year to launder.

I was always taught that dacron/tetron is not just to give a full look and feel but more importantly that it is a protective layer to stop the back side of some fabrics from being abraded against the foam. For example Draylon and other heavy piled fabrics while very hard wearing on the face side can easily be damaged from the backside due to movement (abrasion) against the foam causing the pile to fall out .

I wrap my cushions but as I put the cover on them, I make sure the dacron ( or similar), lays perfectly against all sides. Thank you for your advice re spray glues. I am contemplating doing some work on an Aus very well made hardwood frame couch from 1992, intended to last centuries. It was built to be soft vlumptuoys and came with off white thick looses cover, not upholstered beyond the initial base cover. Has spring base and big cushions, with feathers and something else. The collapse and have to fluffed up daily. But my worry was fear of degassing stuff and terrible blues if some one did this.because I am asthmatic. You are a champ doing this thank you.

Hi Scott, I hope you see this. I get the same response when I go into Joan's on occasion. I am not an expert like you. By the way thanks for this video. I did upholstery in 1974 when employment was, take what you can get. I enjoyed the new profession for about a year. I haven't done a lot since, am having a problem remembering. Your' video did a good job refreshing my memory. I am upholstering a sofa of mine during lock down. I'm glad I found this video on Batting. I was Leary of using spray glue. I like your' procedure better. It took me a whole day to refresh myself with the sewing machine. :O) I was a tool maker by trade. I finished out my carrier doing that. I'm having fun with this project. A seamstress, Tool maker in disguise. :O) Appreciate this video, Thanks Scott.

@@Factorydirectdesignersworkroom Scott every profession has its idiosyncrasies. upholstery is not digging ditches but it is tough on the fingers and wrists until you build them up. Not to mention the staple in the fingers. Like a gun shot wound. I'm happy with the cushions they worked out real good. I'm not redoing the frame work, I'm ditching that. It is a Castro convertible. Too big and weighs a ton. I'm going to make a patio type sofa out of wood. That is good enough for me! I'm looking for more ideas to do more upholstery. I got the sewing machine purring like a Kitten. I might as well use it.
