Indy Reno 10 days ago It also comes to a surprise that the genera Salmo and Oncorhynchus are different and not closely related, they only look similar due to convergent evolution, Salmo is part of the tribe Salmonini, which also contains the genera Salvelinus and Salvethymus, whilst Oncorhynchus belongs to a whole different tribe, which is the tribe Oncorhynchini, which also contains the genera Brachymystax, Parahucho, and Hucho, meaning that the closest living relatives of the pacific salmon and trout (genus Oncorhynchus) are the taimens and lenoks.

don't they both branch from the salmoninae family though?
@indyreno2933 Жыл бұрын
Salmoninae is a subfamily of the family Salmonidae, the genera Salmo and Oncorhynchus fall under different tribes within the subfamily Salmoninae, which is why the genera evolved independently and display examples of convergent evolution.

I was unaware that salmon could potentially spawn more than once. I wonder if that's only specific species??
@DeepMarineScenes5 жыл бұрын
It is very species specific. A small percentage of Atlantic salmon can survive to spawn again. However, Pacific salmon will only spawn once.

There is no shortage of Atlantic Salmon. The reason it is a protected "endangered species" and you can't buy it WILD CAUGHT is that it is the most nutritious ocean fish you can eat. Any farmed fish is extremely unhealthy because of what they are fed. Atlantic Salmon are not any more "vulnerable" than any other ocean fish. They are not "in decline". That is b s.
@potats17702 ай бұрын
Clearly you don't live anywhere near any Atlantic salmon river because they are in huge decline
@caritas89842 ай бұрын
They can not be counted in any meaningful way - that is simply not possible. And if you look at the numbers presented by the gov bodies like NOAA etc they vary wildly from year to year. They are officially an "endangered species" - it is illegal to catch and sell them commercially so they are not being depleted by consumption. This is all about control of the food supply, and building that great environmental empire of bureaucrats who have gov jobs with retirements. If you look at the hierchy in NOAA alone there is a "specialist" official for every "endangered" species. Then you have the "international" bodies and peripheral NGOs. It really is a gold digging self-perpetuating empire that can declare anything it wants "endangered" or otherwise.

Also the salmon farming is an example of EVERY resource we use. Either create the resource or deplete it. Imagine if we went full vegan, will that help. No, all the lands would be destroyed still from farming and possible chance of making every inch of good soil dead. Stop protesting against human survival, you are protesting yourself. Use that energy to find solutions instead of only shouting for progress with no answers and waiting for someone else to figure things out.
