So if there’s a credible accusation, why aren’t they handed over to the authorities under that Dallas charter??? This whole thing is just SICK! I’ve been a practicing Catholic since I was born (going on 27 years old) and find this whole situation horrific!!

I think these studies are only accounting for those convicted, not accused. And I'm not saying that an accusation automatically means it happened, but what I am saying is you cannot get a definite number one way or the other. Looking at the past 50 years, many allegations didn't start becoming public until later in the nineties and especially 2000s when the coverups were exposed and many cases were settled quietly outside of court.

The lechery in the Catholic clergy is well known. But, the ancient Hindus have stolen the march many millennia ago. Muni Parashar had a fleeting affair with the poor fisher girl Satyavati and begat her a son Vyasa. Vishwamitra had a fling with Menaka and begat her Shakuntala. The guy ran away without taking any parental responsibility. Even today, the assorted gurus, swamis, and babas abuse their gullible followers.

I have listened to many Catholic apologists for why every Christian should become a Catholic. One of their strongest arguments is that having a Pope who can be decisive in critical social and moral issues of the day can help bring stability to the Church. But if the Pope won’t be decisive and authoritative in removing Bishops who are suspected of covering up abuse, how can we believe that having a Pope who is the successor to the apostle Peter, really accomplishes anything true and good compared to other faith traditions?

I always viewed the hierarchy like any other organization like the president, principle at a school, dean at a college etc. Exxept the papacy being for the faith the one true church which has lasted many years.
@docverit2668
@docverit2668 2 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. Real Catholic Apologists do not present the teaching regarding the Papacy and the function of the Pope the way you have presented it here. Moreover, it is not "one of their strongest arguments," so you are dishonestly setting up a straw man you can easily knock down. Try to be more honest and check what real Catholic teaching is, and seek out serious Catholic Apologists like the ones you can find on the website known simply as Catholic Answers you can access for free and discover actual Catholic teaching and in doing so, you can then see why becoming part of the One True Church established by Jesus Christ is the wisest move anybody can make, not just other Christians.

What apologist has ever said that? The Pope is our patriarch, he's basically like a school principal to teachers, he's our structure and although he CAN and often does speak on social issues etc. he isn't infallible unless speaking ex cathedra. Also Pope Benedict literally resigned and got replaced by Pope Francis due to this scandal and him taking responsibility for his poor handling of this issue, how is that not a decisive and authoritative decision made? the church took responsibility, Bishops were removed and safeguarding has been put at the forefront of the church's concerns since the article came out. You don't wanna be Catholic that's fine but don't slander our church as being any more corrupt than any other church.

From where has it come from in these times, that people would be so much after their own benefit that they would do anything because of it, like this? This is not really true in the reality, it's over-exaggerated. In the reality the people are calm and modest and not after their own benefits at all in regards to how it is being made to look. There is no sense to think that something like this is true and applies to everywhere just as it is. The whole scheme of own benefit has been made up and is not how it is in the reality at all. People are not in the reality this competitive sort that does think like this in everywhere, and it is not even possible for most of the people because their nature is against it. You shouldn't have too general conclusions or suppositions about the immorality of the people in this kind of subjects.

His percentages sound like what-aboutism of the foulest kind, and sound highly inaccurate as well. 300 priests in 6 dioceses in PA were credibly accused of abusing 1000+ children. His 4% number would mean there were 7500 priests in those dioceses - there are only 60,000 priests in the entire US so that seems unlikely that well over 10% of them are in those 6 dioceses. Also Australia found that 7% of priests had abused children, I doubt the number here is that different. And his number of 5% of the general population have a predilection toward children does not mean they all actually abused children. That would mean 1 in 20 men have abused a child, which seems highly unlikely. His apologist screed is way too little, too late, and it’s been obvious the church was dragged kicking and screaming to do anything at all about this. And because they never gave out names until recently, hundreds of those defrocked priests are living out their “days of prayer and repentance” in schools, hospitals, even as foster parents! See recent NYT article on that topic. Shameless.

Those 300 accused priests include priests who died around half a century ago and even one who was born in the 1860s. Accusations made against people who have been dead for decades cannot be proven or disproven. The grand jury report contained only a few accusations which were within the statute of limitations, mainly those by Daniel Gallagher, and these later turned out to be false yet not before they had resulted in the conviction of 4 innocent man, (one of whom died in prison), which had been made possible because Maria Sorensen hid vital evidence showing the accusations were false, yet she had an important role in the drafting of the grand jury report. So those accusations against dead priests aren't all that credible, some were definitely true, but there was no proper fact finding.

Let’s say it is 4%, 1% less than the general population- but many of these priests had access to a wider variety of kids. Some were responsible for 100’s of abused kids; and then these men were transferred and hidden. Sure, this happens in schools, scouts and the home. But they don’t have the same protections that Bishops afforded…

Yeah hence the Church addressed this, like what do you people even want? He mentioned in the vid now that anyone with a credible accusation is immediately removed with no chance at coming back to the ministry. Also this does happen all the time in other professions around kids, look into cases with teachers and same thing happens, people get moved around so organisations can save face.

A poor argument to compare Catholic clerics to the general population. The clerics are expected to live by a higher standard and they consistently do not. This idea INVALIDATES THE ENTIRE IDEA of priesthood as a medium to God. Your own argument proves they are same as you and I.

@Ryan Tran that's actually counterintuitive lol it would be like saying: the best way to scape from illness is to get away from any sort of doctor... Indeed sin as a condition in humans and what Satan enhances of it IS an illness and Jesus as such, not the institutions, is the cure and it's stronger when people are together praying for each other and teaching about God, about the Word, about what to do to heal that illness.
