Luigi is Italian... not Latino... further, these are voice actors. It's a little more difficult to recognize ethnicities in voices... so I think there's more correct source material and diversity in this new Mario movie due to Luigi's voice actor exhibiting flairs of an Italian Brooklyn accent. Leguizamo racialized the character, and didn't respect the diversity of the source material.

This is just a theory of mine, but I'm pretty sure the grandpa is the OG Jumpman from the Donkey Kong game. Cranky Kong is included in this film, and Nintendo has confirmed he is the original Donkey Kong from all those years ago, so maybe the Grandpa is the Jumpman we saw from that game. Once again, this is just a theory of mine, and I'm not sure as to how true it is. Could make for a nice Film Theory episode though!

A fun fact that most people will notice if they watch the trailers and the movie: the scene at 2:55 , although it’s played in the trailers, was initially cut in the final film after Mario gets his face sucked by a fish. So we don’t get to see Peach and toad trying to help Mario get the fish off his face in the film, we just see the fish sucking on Mario’s face as the scene dissolves into a new scene.

Luigi's ringtone is the GameCube intro when you start the console up. The sequence with Toad leading Mario to the castle includes some features from Captain Toad. I also thought that the "Superstar" references the winner of Mario Party which makes sense since there is a Mario party where Bowser is a playable character. I always thought the stars were called Starmen or Power Stars so I'm not sure where else superstar comes from. And finally, DK is shown throwing barrels at Mario while standing on the same red metal platforms that looks just like in the NES game.

I dont think Bowser forcing Peach to marry him isnt refernce to the Super Show episode, but is likely based on the anime Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! which was a few years BEFORE the episode aired. Also the opening of the movie is mainly based on their sprites from Super Mario Maker. When their van gets busted, you can see a travel agency called Shine with some dolphins, a reference to Super Mario Sunshine. When Mario says that the white gloves are for standing out itnis a reference to Shigeru Miyamoto saying tnat they gave white gloves to Jumpman in order to distinguish his hands from his face. Lets get one thing straight: John isn't mad because the cast "isn't diverse enough." He's mad, and has said so in previous statements, that he wanted to be a part of this movie and for whatever reason, Nintendo and/or Illumination did not allow that. That is why he is upset. He's jealous. I like John's work, and I wish they had given him a role in this to honor the original 1993 live-action film, but let's be real here, at the time no one liked that movie at all and it's understandable as to why Nintendo wouldn't want anyone knowing the '93 film ever existed... John and Bob Hoskins were some of the best parts of the '93 film, but the movie sucked. It had nothing to do with anything mario related, other than a few begrudgingly given nods to the game series. Hollywood calls it the "video game curse", but what it really is, is hollywood not knowing as much about what their audience wants as much as they think they do. Something that they're still having problems with to this day.

If the possible references for bowser marrying peach, I bet it’s mostly a reference to odyssey for 2 reasons. Close to the start of the movie, I think during the pop scene, you can see Sand Kindom’s famous Inverted Pyramid in the background, maybe the rest of the kingdom im not sure. And bowser wears the same wedding outfit as in Odyssey

I believe that Mario is both a Japanese character and an American character. He’s Japanese because he was designed in Japan for a Japanese company. He’s American because most of his characterization came from the American TV show and the American branch of the company, especially through casting the American voice talent Charles Martinet. Mario is a perfect symbol of US-Japan cooperation.

My original thought was that the the dad and uncle looked like an older version of the live action Mario and Luigi from the show. Like live action Mario grew up and lost some hair on top.

I think John Leguizamo issue was a lack of Italians, as an Italian I know how “testa dura” or hard headed, we can be about these sort of things,( especially the southern Italians), and I can assure you he could care less about representation of other races and cultures! personally I don’t care, it seems like they did a great job! and it seems like they had a good pick of individuals anyway, like Sebastian Maniscalco and Reno Romano

Tellement un manque de respect de la part de l’acteur qui jouait Luigi dans le premier film. C’est avec ce genre de comportement qu’on crée du des différences entre les gens au lieu de créer du soutien et de la solidarité. On est tous pareils.
