The things and places he knew from the past were completely gone or changed, and he was doomed to die likely within 10-15 years, and his existence and memories gone forever, but that would crush the kid. That's the most horrible part of getting old by far, but you don't want to make a kid go through life thinking about that.

I didn't know why and how she died, I always thought you'll just sleep and one day you'll never wake up. I later learned (around 10 years later) that she commited suicide. Everyone remember the first time, as a kid, that they were told to or had to go to a funeral. Even though those types of events make you realize that life is not just filled with hapiness, it is really hard to go through for any one.

I am currently a preschool teacher, and I always have two rules for hugs; 1. I ask their permission, because not every child responds well to touch. 2. If they say that they do want a hug, I let them be the first to let go. Sometimes they hold on for a long time, and I never know how much they need it. These may seem like small things, but they usually seem to feel better afterwards :)
