...I still remember that September 2001 when Fad Gadget played live on stage during Depeche Mode's Exciter tour. It was in Hamburg, pouring rain, ass cold...and during Ricky's Hand that Frank threw his blood-soaked rubber hand into the crowd and fucking hit me...I looked like having had an accident...it felt good and the rest of the evening was brilliant knowing Ricky's Hand was in my pocket...

I wasn't even born when Fad Gadget made this masterpiece, but I love it! Definitely the hardcore of that time. I used to putvit at the end of the parties when I was a dj, back the late 90's, beginning 2000's. The people were tripping as hell on this tune.

Your interest in Fad Gadget is commendable..."these guys" are actually one guy...Frank Tovey

Video created by film director Alex Proyas. Sad to think that Frank has been dead 8 years now - and never got the MASSIVE recognition his work deserved. I saw him play live twice back in the 80's, and he was simply awesome - a real force of nature. I miss his idiosyncratic music, another one-off, gone.

My favourite Tovey song back in the early eighties, sad that he's gone.

This video really beautifully sums up so many of the dystopian ideas that were at the core of early British new wave.

Was thanks to John Peel and his radio show i heard Fad Gadget playing Ricky's Hand, liked it so much i bought the 45 single and got it played in the jukebox of my local pub, and yes the electric drill that was used on the soundtrack even got a mention how cool was that.

@brianartillery You know, it truly saddens me to know that I never had the chance to hear his music live... From his CD music/videos I became quite fond of fad gadget and always knew the talent he possessed, but to find out he was dead 5-6 years before I started listening kills me. Although music is eternal, I'm glad he will always be with me...

I saw Fad Gadget 6 months before he tragically died at the Depeche Mode Exciter tour in Manchester 2003. I must admit i'd never heard any of his stuff before but when opened with this song, i was blown away! Damn shame:(

@df15gadget12 жыл бұрын
Video is an early project of Alex Proyas (Dark City, Knowing, the Crow, I Robot ...) called "neon" (see beginning of video) with Ricky's Hand as an inspiration/soundtrack.The Blood definitively ripped off Fad Gadget's tune/melody: Ricky's hand 1980; Stark Raving Normal 1983. Now, please, y'all go buy some Fad Gadget songs to feed his family! (no second hand records/CDs)

@HAL0INREVERSE you have a good point there about proto futurepop, if you listen to many of the tunes that have some elements of new wave or old school ebm but not exactly called that, so where do they fit? neither are they synthpop neither so they could be called proto futurepop. Its a bit like the italodisco and eurodisco and a bit like italodisco and synthpop. The thing is proto sounds a good word to fit sounds that were not invented back then, well done

Yeah Moroder used loops too, appregiators very similar to what Tovey would have used. Before that King Tubby used cut audio tape. But I hear what you're saying.
@djmusicjac13 жыл бұрын
@HAL0INREVERSE i know what you mean by synthpop, however synthpop is somewhat smoother in the melodies. When i heard this i did not think synthpop as i heard a bit of melodic industrial in the tune and neither did i want call it that, so i called it melodic futurepop. Saying that futurepop didn't exist then, but i still will call it that
