There is just something about the art style of 80's, 90's and early 2000's anime that works incredibly well for gritty psychological thrillers. Maybe it's the slightly washed-out colors, the painted backgrounds or the way they drew characters during that time but it works way better than modern styles.

It's a combination of all those things. Psychological anime in the 90s and early 20s were just more surreal since a lot of the themes were both philosophical and often ontological.

I disagree, today are beautiful shows that could surpass old ones, because the animation industry evolve. We have violet evergarden, space dandy, mob psycho 100, I hear your voice, garden of words, etc, that have beautiful animation. Also, we have new topics and ways to handle them : gay love in Yuri on Ice and Blomm into you, mental illness in sangatsu no lion, I know evangelion handle depression but is in a more negative light (I don't think is inaccurate, I just prefer see this topic in a more balance vway), etc. The industry is alive, I just think the focus is different, because anime now is interested in everyday life and talk about topics that are important for Japanese people right now. It's ok if you don't like the actual anime, is personal preference, but don't condemn an industry full of talented people that works a lot in those shows.

I love that you added Metropolis to this list , one of my all time favorite Anime's and as you said one of the most beautiful ones as well (both visually and in the story). Perfect Blue is also a fantastic addition to this list and of course Akira and the legend it is and has created. Ninja Scroll was such a fun one too watch, and I agree in describing it to be Tarantino esque. Ghost in the Shell is a must see for anyone that wants to get into a more mature anime. All in all I think you put a fantastic list together, it reminded me of my teen years in the 90's. A couple in here I haven't yet. Also a few I would add personally but that's just my opinion. Great video, solid list, 2 thumbs up.

A good list, I'm reaching 40 in a couple of years and would definitely recommend all of these. Even though there are some series about children/high schoolers targeted at adults, it't great to have a ranking of anime for people 30/40+, not about sex/violence, but simply a good cinema to watch as an adult, without the feeling of this childishness etc. I would add to this list several pearls which I found over these years (which is now more and more difficult to find, the target audience of modern anime seem to be high school students only). - Jin Roh (or I'll cut the whole list and say anything where Kenji Kawaii made music, there is a lot of amazing movies, like mentioned earlier Patlabor or Sky Crawlers) - Sword of the Stranger - Tokyo Godfathers - Giovannis Island (Grave of the Fireflies alike, lots of onion being cut in the movie at some point) - Summer Wars - Millenium Actress - Patema Inverse (even depicting youth, the anime plot and concept is wicked) - Godzilla anime movies from 2017/2018ish, quite dark and serious - Batman, the Knight of Gotham - Wonderful Days (Korean but still amazing anime movie) - Mirai (about a child but I enjoyed it a lot with my family, just like with any Ghibli production) - Lu over the wall (again childish, but great to watch with children) From anime series and OVAs these cross my mind: - Samurai Champloo (absolutely brilliant series, close IMHO to Cowboy Bebop in certain aspects) - Rouroni Kenshin OVA (a series of 4 episodes, but a great one) - Mushishi (static, boring someone would say, but 2 seasons sucked me in completely) - Berserk (20.05.2021, RIP master Miura). The best dark fantasy you can get out there. Original 1992 series was not perfect, but man, what a series it was back in the 90s! - Space Brothers - Planetes - Battle Angel Alita (OVAs from the 90s, still feels like a quality adult anime today) My personal recommendation: Drama "Hello Harinezumi". from 2018. 10 episodes, I absolutely enjoyed it, a quite mature production without many sexual/violence references, something for older fans. (BTW original manga was quite entertaining)
@NicholayN
@NicholayN 2 жыл бұрын
This. Most of the times I've searched for "mature anime" so far I've gotten results pretty much conflating "mature" with "sexual/gory", which is ironically not very mature. Best I've gotten in a series was Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex which admittedly featured some fanservice but otherwise treated the viewer like an adult. I found very convincing the main characters and their relationships as agents in a dangerous, high stakes counter terrorism job where they are experienced, competent, and committed to the mission in spite of the plots and the power struggles going on domestically. They act like how I expect hardened military vets, detectives and gangsters to act. It's interesting to note that the 1995 film (a masterpiece in my opinion), Sky Crawlers, Jin Roh, and the Patlabor movies were all directed by the same director, Mamouru Oshii. I think Patlabor 2 is the most similar to 1995 GitS - brooding, even haunting, with moments of serious discussion and moments of soulful reflection, mixed in with political conspiracy and intrigue, and even credited with the same screenwriter (as well as the venerable Kenji Kawaii for the soundtrack). Interestingly the scope of these works is beyond entertainment with Patlabor 2 and GitS: Stand Alone Complex (different director) seeming to share an affinity for subtle commentary on Japanese politics, economics, and defense... "A return to a Shangri-la built on the backs of foreigners" (80s Japan economic boom?) and jolting the nation out of its peace-loving stupor (in reference to discussions about Japanese remilitarization in the face of growing regional threats I think - you see, its post WWII constitution drafted by the US prohibits the country to have a military, only allowing a self defense force) are references to both works that come to mind. I won't claim to fully understand the theories and motivations behind these works, and I may have gotten some things wrong, but all of this is what makes them so entertaining. IMO this is what mature/seinen is supposed to be!
@TheJaslanin
@TheJaslanin 2 жыл бұрын
@@NicholayN Interesting point of view. I don't go that deep into Japanese politics and culture, looking rather for a balanced entertainment. But indeed GitS whole series is always top class. Recently I watched GitS SAC 2045 on netflix. At first glance the CGI has hurt my eyes. Then 15 minutes into the show, and as much as I have no time for such things, I swallowed both seasons in two evenings, they were so good.

Berserk has to be one of the best adult anime I've encountered since I was a kid in the 90's, with akira being the 1st anime I ever saw. Most of these anime on this list I've really enjoyed but Berserk holds a special place since it was the 1st manga I ever got to read. Loving comic books growing up I freaked when I saw how many pages a "Japanese comic" had. The recent anime "reboot" was in my opinion a little more thorough on story than the original but I can't say the actual animation style, that weird cgi and traditional art mash-up was my cup of tea. I mean its worked for other anime just fine in the past, like some on this list, but there was something off about Berserk's. Just my opinion though, still a great anime/manga.

Hearing you describe Macross made my heart hurt. The pop star isn't a subplot, she's kinda... the thing that ends the fight between the big people and the little people, because apparently singing just stops them cold or whatever. And the little people didn't build the Macross, they... found it. Rather, it crash landed on Earth, and they built a city around it using its technologies, and then it just kinda got sucked into space, along with a pair of naval ships.. which of course fit perfectly into attaching to the Macross's arms. Because nothing sells toys quite like toys that stick together.

Just because he mentioned "sub-plot" did not mean he was taking away from the character. It was a reference to Sharon's development as a character not being primary focus during the course of the story. Yes she wound up being the primary antagonist at the end, but the focus was primarily on the rivalry between the two main characters up to that point.

The Macross movie in the 80's had mind blowing animation compared to anime coming out today. WAY ahead of its time. Kinda surprised that he said that the animation is too outdated to watch. I would argue that the animation in the movie especially in certain scenes is much better than most of the anime on this list.

Hell yeah, son! Ghost in the Shell right at number one! I think that film is one of the best and something I would recommend to anyone who loves movies/animation in general. However, the one thing that sells the film for me is the soundtrack. Every moment is filled with what you need to listen to and the music is strategically placed to help that process. Your list is all (I think) 20th century, which kind of dates it. I would recommend one from the early 21st century: "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie". Based on an excellent TV series, the movie and series reunite the three big names who created "Macross Plus": director Shinichiro Watanabe, writer Keiko Nobumoto, and composer Yoko Kanno. They struck gold with "Macross Plus" and platinum with "Cowboy Bebop"! An amazing film that should be in any Top Ten!

I would like to supplement this well-done list with a clear recommendation for the grown-up Otaku to watch every film Satoshi Kon did (Millenium Actress, Paprika), every film Katsuhiro Otomo did (Rojin Z, Steamboy) and every film of Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Mirai no Mirai). They're all great! I also recommend the early works of Makoto Shinkai before he became super-famous for Your Name (wich is, like Weathring with you, also a really well-done movie, but obviousliy targeted to a younger audience.). Furthermore, I really missed 'Macross - Do You Remember Love?' in this list, which in my honest opinion is the first full-length cinematic masterpiece of Japanese animation and leaded the way for all of those mentioned before!

Great selection and fantastic video. Must confess I'm rather 'old school' (I'm 51 years old, so you make the math), and up until the early 2000's, anime meant a whole other thing for me (the 'toughest stuff' being Mazinger Z). Still, "Robotech" was great, and I preferred it to Saint Seiya, that was getting huge over here back in the day. It wasn't until the mentioned early 2000's that an Argentinian-based channel got air in cable, that I could watch Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop, which absolutely blew my mind and got me interested. Akira, Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor (this one ran in the aforementioned channel as a series) were part of that too. Been getting a lot of good reviews of Perfect Blue lately, so I think it might be the next stop. Great video!

An amount of CGI can make an anime appealing or help the story, especially when they first started the cgi move & was filtering hand drawn through a computer to add a layer of affect; & some full CGI anine can be really good (i.e the first Appleseed remake). It is definitely true that CGI over the years has made allot of anime seem lazily made & produced. I personally think it also has to do with back in the day production companies weren't trying to pump out 50 anime a month, but were actually competing with eachother for a better product, taking more time to create a piece of beautiful art, rather than a cookie cutter copy of what's popular at the moment.

I was curious to see where he would put ( The Original ) "Ghost In The Shell" and I was happy to see he configured this groundbreaking work into its proper position. The Hollywood development was almost ( other than characters and scene creation ) wholly dissimilar to the original Anime, a mere shadow. More than conventional Anime / Manga, this is a profound written film that extends beyond mere entertainment, while enjoyable to watch, the art work at times is sublime, and the script is awe inspiring even after the translation.
