Apparently we were supposed to have jewel in the sleepover line but for some reason she was axed. I think there was a prototype photo of jade wearing her outfit. So they DID have the intention of diversity but scrapped it for the (mainly) white characters. Interesting

I so wish they had taken the opportunity to reboot with a full rainbow of the most popular characters, rather than just the original girls. Obviously MGA knows who has sold the best over time, it would have been amazing to have Meena for orange or Krystal for purple like you said, with the natural hair from her JH doll. The diversity is a huge loss, RH has always thrived on its diverse characters, even though it took far too long for them to start doing so regularly, and now it’s starting over from square one. At least swim Sunny is cute? 😅

Since this reboot was clearly done only for financial reasons, I kind of fear that they went back to the mostly-white cast for the same reason. :/ As you said, they definitely have stats on who sells the best, and anecdotally, I suspect BIPOC dolls are a hard sell in some areas. Where I live in northern Europe, Krystal and Daria are still widely available in stores despite the rest of series 2 and 3 being long gone. The charitable reading is that kids want dolls that look like them and there aren’t very many Black people in places like Scandinavia… the less charitable reading is, well, racism. Either way, I suspect MGA might have data suggesting that a pale lineup will sell better, and since this reboot seems to represent them jettisoning artistic integrity and community approval in favor of naked profit… well, it might be in line with that thinking to toss out diversity too.

All I can say is not for me :( I miss the elegant high end fashions, and the SH dolls with the darker edge. Lack of articulation is sad as well. I will not be purchasing any of these dolls, and find it very disappointing that they are changing so much. I respect how you feel, and other people who want them, but I'm only going to get dolls If they bring back more high end dolls, and Sh like they were in the first few lines. Sad times for me regarding this brand ;(

The reboot is crazy to me because they keep posting on online that they are the top selling fashion doll. Just to turn around and do this. It’s a shame to see them go cause we was definitely getting some poppy Parker quality at a very good price. The reboot is definitely a dealbreaker for me because while you can say, the dolls are more attractive to the average person there’s so much lost in quality of clothes, articulation and accessories.

I am intensely disappointed by the Rainbow High Rebrand, and I intensely dislike it. I literally felt depressed and cried when the leaks came out. Poppy's exclusion just feels wrong, and I never had the biggest emotional attachment to the main Rainbow High Series 1 characters, unfortunately. I mainly got into SH/RH because of the more goth/alternative dolls like the Storm Twins and Emi, as well as the attention to detail in the dolls and their clothes. It feels like everything that made SH/RH dolls special for me is going away, and that is intensely depressing to me. The removal or wirst articulation and thigh rotation is intensely disappointing as well.🖤💜

I think they are more than likely testing the waters with the core dolls being rebooted first.. and as with the first time around they will do more diverse dolls.. but if they fail they will probably discontinue the line completely and put more focus on Bratz..

The lack of skin tones is definitely a problem. We were also getting eyeglasses too... I also don't understand this stepbackwards, especially with the Bratz reboot keeping the diverse cast and LOL dolls also continuing with darker skin tones. This company is baffling.

I have one positive, and that would be I’m happy we kept the updated face molds. However, overall I feel this reboot is just such a horrible direction for them to go in and I’m really bummed bc rainbow high has been so impactful in my life, as much as dolls can be.

The glitter faces/t-zone are unforgivable. Amaya is the worst from what I’ve seen. Slime is factually a throwaway feature once it’s made. I wonder how long it will last kids before it goes all old, crusty and moldy. Nothing here is as bad as Mattel and Barbie yet. But there’s plenty of potential for this to get to that level… which is frightening. I personally cannot by any means spend $25 or any full retail amount of money on anything here.

Thanks for your take on this complete 180 that MGA has pulled. The fashion packs are being sold as "blind bags" on Amazon and in my mind this is unforgivable. The little junior high dolls are cute in person, but how strange looking at their unmoving wrists. While I'm sad that they've taken this direction, it's kind of a relief in a way...will save a ton of money not purchasing Rainbow High anymore. As an untypical person, I can't touch slime; just thinking about it gives me the heebee jeebies, so that's a negative strike. I was thinking of the diversity issue and how you pointed out they all have bluish eyes (which is only 6% of the world's population). I have blue eyes and have always thought, "what's the big deal"? Finally, I get it...YES, I GET IT FINALLY! it is a big deal! Thanks again for your opinions and your honesty, they're spot on...and, yes those little creatures really are nonsensical.

I am definitely not buying these dolls. I dont really like the slime, because it reminds me of the poopsy slime surprise unicorn. I thought that was really digusting lmao. Besides that, i just feel like Rainbow High lost all creativity. There are so many different types of colors you could make/ fashions to add. I mean, you could even have a mixed color fashion line, where a doll is both black and pink, etc. I think it would have been cool to see that. It's too bad that didn't happen.

i love(d) rainbow high but i always felt at odds with how they treated diversity. fwiw im a barbie fan. everyone hates modern barbie but i love that as a black disabled woman i can go to a walmart and target and buy a dark skin barbie that’s in a wheelchair and that has a big afro. i can get a curvy dark skin barbie with burgundy braids. i can get a petite brown skin south asian barbie. it’s amazing to me. rainbow high…sometimes felt like the diversity was done begrudgingly. they used the paper bag test with the first launch, threw us a bone with krystal in the second launch, and steadily got better with a few bumps in the road. their refusal to do afro textured hair bothered me so bad. especially since they’re part of mga, a company that has lol omg where dolls have so much textured hair. BARBIE DOES TEXTURED HAIR! and when they finally did it…it was with a least popular doll in their least popular line. it felt like they did it as an excuse to say “hey we gave you textured hair and you didn’t buy it”. it just felt like, since rainbow high is meant to be a fashion forward line, they were telling us textured hair isn’t fashion. them going back to their roots with the reboot is just so distasteful. it also may be the stock images or just me, but did they go back to sunny’s original skin tone? they made her a little darker in following releases, but it sort of looks like they made her lighter again. but i could be wrong. also, random side tangent: i hate, hate: HATE when doll lines do 3-4 white dolls, one token black doll as a line. it’s so tired. why, in 2024, is this still a thing? mga has been doing this a lot with the tweens and i don’t understand how the company that gave us bratz and lol omg is doing this. how hard is it to make a diverse doll lineup? one white (latino, non latino, or two dolls who represent either), one black, one east asian. mix it up! one arab, one south asian, one indigenous, one polynesian. i just want these companies to do better.

Skyler is a woc too not just sunny, like your right sunny is just a token Black girl but im just noting that skyler is also brown(not sure if shes Black or no) but still Tho tbh-mattel is honestly the same with regards to diversity, yes barbie is very diverse but then you go to monster high and everyone has either straight hair or wavy even clawdeen despite the fact that in the cartoon she has very tight curls, the only ones whom have textured hair are clawd & venus-a side character & a guy :\ the fans are constantly begging them to give clawdeen textured hair yet they refuse to even tho they had no issue giving her brother an afro It was an issue in g1 too where howleen at first had an afro but then mattel forced the team to change her cause shes not “girl friendly enough” and gave her straight hair instead It just comes off as them being scared of having their female characters be “too Black” i mean hell the only female character who got textured hair is venus-whos straight out green

Tbh I just really hate these dolls. I get that there are some objective positives but with us losing so much of the quality and diversity it’s hard to see that. I won’t be buying any of these dolls. I heard a theory that MGA is purposefully nuking rainbow high to draw attention tone new Bratz and trying to let the brand die out naturally, which I think makes sense to me, since I don’t think MGA is stupid enough to think that these will excel in todays toy market. Idk I kinda fell off rh a while ago but this still stings, at least we have MH g3

Yay someone else likes the new Amaya 😄 I can’t wait to see your review of her 😊 Poor Violet, I really do think they don’t like her either! I think I actually like Amaya best because her pet is the most attractive one to me. I do wish they would put on the box what the animals are. Poor Shadow High, I really did love that line. I am sad about that, though I kinda expected it a while ago like you did. My friends’ kids did not like Shadow High at all so yeah 😢 It’s interesting that I’ve had people in Europe tell me that Rainbow High is very popular there and are never kept in stock because of their popularity and yet MGA is still rebooting it, very interesting. I am probably way too optimistic but am hopeful that the second line in this reboot will be diverse because it just doesn’t make sense that they wouldn’t do that when they had become so better with diversity especially when people did tell them to do better and they listened then. It really doesn’t make sense to me. Ooooo I do like your idea that they should have gone with Michelle or they could have not had Amaya and replaced her with Kia Hart who has brown eyes and is Latina. Or like you said, Krystal could take been the purple doll because very few like Violet it seems.

Thanks for the very thoughtful review 💖 Since this rebrand is aiming for a younger audience, I understand the lack of wrist articulation ( I do not like the lack, mind you). Small removable hands can be a choking hazard and easy to lose. The thigh joint is the one I will really miss. Between RH and Barbie MTM, I am having so much fun posing my dolls criss cross applesauce, kneeling, and knees to the side. I can see why MGA isn't bothering with this joint, I doubt the younger demographic will care, but I do! If this were a new doll line, I would think it was good quality and a decent value for the price. As you said though, this is a big change from the high end fashions we used to get (I just got Demi Batista and OMG, what an awesome outfit!!!). For me, none of these dolls are worth the space they would take up in my doll collection, neither as a reboot doll, nor seen through the lens of a new collection.

The lack of diversity in this reboot is one of the biggest disappointments. While it's too little too late now, This is what I would have done specifically to fix the diversity in Rainbow High without changing the main cast too much. 1. Get rid of Poppy and replace her with a dark skinned orange themed doll. She by far had the least defined personality and least cohesive style. (seriously what about her is supposed to be hip hop?) This would have bumped the dark skinned girls up from 2/8 to 3/8. 2. Retcon Amaya and Bella to be Asian. They are ambiguous enough that MGA could have quietly released new dolls of them with the monolid face sculpt. They could have done that with fantastic fashion when they were updating the faces. They could have gotten episodes talking about conforming to white beauty standards. People would have probably enjoyed that. Especially since Amaya was already getting shit for being the white cishet girl replacing the pink lesbian. 3. Make Jade x Bella explicitly canon. If Monster High can do it, so can you Rainbow High. 4. Bring back Kontent with Karma. her vlogs were better than Violet's. 5. Bring back Krystal's news articles. The Rainbow High website used to have articles written by Krystal but the mysteriously stopped after the pacific Coast episode. 6. stop using purple eyes and stop putting blue, purple, and green eyes on dark skinned girls. Use more textured hair styles. All of this could have been done without necessitating a reboot. :/ And the only thing that was done on this list was removing Poppy and replacing her with Amaya. And revamping Amaya to be... Hideous. Shadow High was also declining in diversity despite staring so strong. But thats another story.

Yesterday I finished Rainbow high on Netflix really good I hear a rumor of Ever After high reboot so I decided to catch up with that show to. Even Winx club is coming back that sounds exciting to! One of my fav alternative nick shows I watched in the morning when it was too early for Spongebob to come on. I am not a fan of big dolls,but I hope they have at least blind bag sized figures one day

They aren't without merit for what they are but I agree with a person I saw once on Reddit that said this should be the rebrand for the Jr. High and left normal RH alone. Like I love the idea of being able to customize the dolls by filling the shoes with slime, that's a great playset gimmick but the unicorns/crystal pods don't fit the aesthetic of rainbow high and I'm not sure why they didn't use that gimmick for the LOL surprise playset rebranding that's happening at the moment and give the nail decorating set to RH because it feels more in line with fashion/beauty/arts school theme. But worst of all it sadly seems that even the best of the pieces in this reboot are horribly cheap looking compared to prior releases (baring Amaya's rainbow dress and the cheerleader uniform). This is sadly not surprising as there has been a slow but steady decline of what they were including with the dolls so it's no surprise that this would eventually turn into a quality dip in the dolls themselves (The tinsel hair and face glitter look so cheap). It feels like a last ditch attempt to milk money out of a child fanbase to make up for a decline in adult buyers (Of course it's probably the fact that they've been less detailed with the designs that have cause adult collectors to collect less and thus them trying to market to kids is a last attempt at making cash so I'm probably more invested in brand integrity than they are at this point). I will say it at least seems like the price reflects the quality change...

As someone who has never collected Rainbow High, I'm mostly just confused as to why MGA didn't attempt to fix the diversity issue with the main cast even though they swapped out a character? I remember the lack of diversity being a huge issue when RH first came out, and it's disappointing that this is still the case. I get that the line as a whole has become more diverse over the years, but still the skintone variation among the main five is practically nonexistent. That being said, overall I think the new dolls are much prettier than the original dolls, but still RH is just not for me. And i made this comment right before you talked about the diversity issue 😅 I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one concerned about it!

What I am mildly amused about is that many collectors (not you by the way) assume that the toy companies are making dolls for them. At the end of the day MGA and Mattel are making toys for kids and they have to make money to survive. As it was I was never bothered about Rainbow High and these days I am very cautious about what ones I buy. This though is probably the beginning of the end and Bratz will be their new focus, where RH will be a distant past line.

These don't appeal to me at all, and I'm actually glad. I'm running out of room for dolls and I got laid off last month, so I don't want to be tempted to spend more. (Side note, no "sorries" warranted for the lay off, I got a year of severance and am trying to take at least a year off if not already retire. I'm not quite sure yet)

The diversity that was finally addressed with this line has returned to heart of what was intended from the start revealing that the eventual diversity moves that were made was not sincere. They know the history of the backlash and yet chose to ignore it with this reboot.

Which would lead to mga going bankrupt because most of their product sales happen through retailers. Even Mattel during 2010 had basically none to very little diversity, barbie only had lightskin nikki, eah completely white, mh are green and pink, and the s.i.s line was poorly distributed because retailers weren't going to stock them in areas where black dolls don't sell. Now with fashionistas they have all the diversity only because they're $10 a piece. These companies aren't going to waste resources and money to create dolls that retailers and mass public won't buy just because the minority collectors want to be all outspoken about wanting diversity than buy it on sale. I've seen plenty of people post shelves of black RH dolls on sales because no one is buying them. It was a miracle we got Rainbow Divas even though Europe retailers didn't want Meline and Ayesha. Doll community is very hypocritical when they cry for diversity than only buy it on sale or buy a green doll instead.

I’m glad that I bought Meena Fleur and asked my sister to buy me Luna Madison for my second part of 18th birthday present while they are still available. (19 in four months XD) This new reboot looks just bad. These pets look creepy at most for me. And if I ever wanna buy slime I’m gonna go to peachybbies( i hope I wrote that right). It’s sad to see quality go, because in Poland these dolls cost well over a hundred PLN (our currency). That’s a lot and I doubt they’re gonna cost much less in these new reboot form.

As a Mexican, I was really disappointed with how Maria Garcia came out but I wouldn't have opposed to her being in the reboot as the new orange doll and I think what you brought up is definitely more interesting than the cast that we got. But also I feel like they could've taken the Monster High G3 approach where they changed up the ethnicities for the cast but nope, same old G1 girls.

I,m still don't have Kimmie and Blu yet. So i,m still buying the current RH dolls. I still want Zoey from SH. So all new rainbow high dolls won't be coming to me until March and April. I,m fixed income so I have to stay in my budget. But I love the new Amaya Raine doll. 😊

My only real negative opinion is that I don't care for the main characters, I don't want more than one of each characters doll so if every release is the core 6 I no longer care! However I do think the dolls look really pretty, I'm probably going to buy swim violet because I don't have her yet

The problem with the rebrand isn't the designs necessarily, it's the execution. The lack of articulation, all characters sharing a single face mold, the face glitter... the production in general just feels so cheap. Oh well, looking forward to Mattel re releasing MyScene and the new Barbie Teens line.

I heard this theory from someone can’t remember who, but someone was saying that they wanted to remove poppy so it’s not a complete rainbow to stray away from anything lgbtq. I’m not sure how true that is but I wanted to throw it out there.

The rumor I heard was that there was a problem between MGA and Integrity Toys' Poppy Parker trademark. But it's just rumor. Runway Poppy disappeared off shelves suspiciously abruptly.

Collectors keep complaining about RH lack of diversity, then they also buy the diverse dolls on sale? Make it make sense, either you support the black dolls or just buy them on discount to give retailers more reason to not stock black dolls. Retailers don't want shelvewarmers

@FaeryTaleDolls that's very true, I too love to budget. The thing is, when you buy dolls discounted that already don't sell well and retailers want as less of, you're going in the statics that retailers show to companies going "look this doesn't sell, we aren't going to stock it/ this only sold discounted, we only want a small quantity". I work with food products and know how retailers work with stocking and buying. Wanting to sell a new flavor to store and if the store has recorded a previous product with same flavor was sold badly they wouldn't buy it to keep their shelve space efficient. Plus it's wasteful. The same can be applied to dolls and toys. It isn't news that racism and colorism exist, and they do impact the dolls of color. MGA CEO has many times said how Walmart only wanted Cloe, surprising he got them to stock all, but as we know down the years less and less Sasha were produced mainly due to low sales. I was surprised we got Rainbow Divas but when I saw people urging each other to wait to buy them on sale, I already knew RH diversity was going to go down because they were expensive and if they failed to impress retailer numbers they would go even harder to not stock $10+ black dolls. Which is how we have all the diversity within barbie $10 range.

From a business standpoint I get why they are giving younger kids more lines because that means more money to make more dolls overall. My personal opinion is I don't think these dolls are that bad I definitely like the swim n style dolls and I like Ruby from the slime dolls
