The book is a commentary on the fear that TV and radio and other uninvented forms of mass media were overtaking consciousness that develops through conversation and reading documents, and history, and religious theory, and classic stories with depth and characters changing from learning. TV became available just a few years before he published this book. The War of the Worlds was a similar concept about radio the first mass media Now we have it in our pockets The net What have we lost? Do we still converse about reality Our specific feelings? Our particular ideas? Or do we converse about content of others’lives who put their stuff on the screens for us to divert our attention and make money from our looks and likes. Without reading, can we ever know what’s true?
