Today we tackle the rest of the braking system on our 1964 Chevy ii. My plan was to do as little as possible.... as per usual the wheels completely came off that plan! So we re plumbed, re lined and re rebuild the entire brake system.
With the brakes working cherry, I wanted to start the car for the first time in a few months. You guessed it..... complete and utter failure. I need to take up another hobby....

Better weld in some sub frame connectors before you get on it hard with the 327. You should be able to make the sub frame connectors yourself. A couple pieces of tubing should do it. There is also a nice bolt in front end for those cars, not a straight axle. Would likely drive ,run, ride better with the bolt in than the straight.

I can tell you sage advice I got from Ed my cigar-chomping ROP teacher in school, he was a damn good mechanic and fabricator he showed us how to cut two unibody cars in half in the right places(one wrecked in front and one wrecked in the rear) weld the two good halves together, and have a car, we actually did a Ford pinto, they were different colors but with his brother teaching autobody class not a problem, when it was finished we drove it across the street to the car dealership they owned and someone bought it. It was a pretty good racket they bought rebuildables at auction and had students work on them free, and they got paid a teachers salary, it was a win-win for everybody because we learned a lot, anyway the advice that ED taught me, he said "you got to eliminate the problem systematically" he was always saying that, RIP Ed.

When I was a kid in high school, my dad had a 67 Nova coupe that we put a 194 6 cylinder back in it. But We Put sixty over high compression pistons in it, an Offenhowser four barrel intake with a six hundred cfm holley. That little car would scoot!! It gave good horse power with good gas mileage.

Love watching you do your thang! But laughed my ass off when you said "take a picture" when you were doing the brakes...back when I started playing with this stuff taking a picture meant bringing the film down to the drugstore and waiting a week for the prints. Working on brakes, water pump, timing chain, et al I had a notebook that I would draw sketches and number parts with tape so I could get things back together! My, how times change!

When doing drum brakes, if the backing plate is excessively rusty, get out your torch and run a flame all over the bare plate. The heat will help remove the rust. Take your wire brush and give it a good cleaning. And when the plate is still warm hit it with some high heat paint. Before I retired from the trade I did this method to every car I did the brakes on. Paint is cheap(ish). And it only takes a few minutes to clean it up. It gives it professional look when it's done. And eliminating rust will help eliminate noise.

My Dad always said you should do one side, and if you forgot how it went back, you could always go look at the side you hadn't touched. Then, after getting it back together just like the untouched side, you should know how to do it, but you have a newly, correctly re-installed side to look at if you aren't too swift.

39:59; fuel line flow……When you check out the used tank, did you inspect the line sock at the bottom of tank?
@Richard4616
@Richard4616 Жыл бұрын
The V8 engine has a 3/8 fuel line and it runs differently than the 6 cylinder. It runs from tank up the right inside of the rocker panel and on the outside of the front frame rail. It turns in front of the shock tower and goes in the engine compartment through a hole in the inner fender skirt to the fuel pump. If you use the original line and position you might get fuel starvation or vapor lock.

I believe you said you paid $5000 for it, I'm assuming that was Canadian. Too bad about the rust, but I still think it was a good deal. Decent '63 and '64 Novas are very rare and expensive in the U.S. The hardtop version is worth more than the post model, I had one of those back in the mid '70s to the early '80s. I put a 289/Powerglide in it. One problem I have with the early Novas is the single leaf springs. I had to replace those with multi leaf rear springs. Did that when I installed the modified Posi rear axle, which I believe came out of a late '60s full sized Chevy wagon. I've been a drag racer since I was 17. That '63 Nova SS was my first drag car/daily driver. Now racing a 383/TH400 manual valve body 1983 S-10. Once you get started it is VERY addictive, and that Nova would be the perfect car. I would take it to a detail shop, have it put on a lift, and have the bottom steam cleaned, then paint it with a lighter color. Uncle Tony likes white, I'm thinking more medium gray. Check the front leaf spring mounts very carefully, My right one was damaged, probably from a PO driving over something, and I had to have it repaired. Interesting that has an inline six and 5 lug wheels. My '63 came with an inline six and 4 lug wheels. I jacked up the rear with air shocks and put L60-14 tires on it (265/60-14) They stuck out 2" past the fenders. I've done a LOT of drum brakes. If I were going to use that rear end, I'd pull the axles, replace the bearings, remove the brake backing plates and differential cover, sandblast and paint them, and put new fluid in the differential. I have access to a sandblaster. VERY handy when working on old cars. Best way to get those brake springs on is to use a screwdriver, and pry the hooked end over the post. I'd replace the single master cylinder with a dual master cylinder and replumb things. I didn't used to believe in that until I had a single master cylinder fail. Why does everybody bleed the brakes the hard way? Unless you have ABS, it's a piece of cake. You can gravity bleed them, you can just put a clear plastic line on the bleeder screw, and stick the other end in a jar of clean brake fluid, keep the master cylinder full, and pump the pedal. It will pump air out, and suck brake fluid back in. Or you can get really fancy and just get a set of SpeedBleeders. They replace the bleeder screws. They have a one way ball check valve in them, fluid and air can get out, but nothing can get back in. If it won't pull fuel from the tank, do it the VGG way. Stick a hose in that gas can, connect the other end to the carb, and splice in a 12V electric pump somewhere in between. That's her car too? You just gave her a beautiful Caprice Classic WITH A/C!!, she has the blue '57 Chevy, and whatever happened to the red Opel GT?

Check your outer rear spring front spring eye flasnges, the frave mount likes 2 cut in2 the flange where the frame mount rubs it.

Its solid, that’s a win Dan! Can’t wait to see it running with the 327! I buy those cheap acid brushes for the seam sealer. Toss em when done. I agree with the other comments about frame connectors. Drum brakes arent voodoo. Black magic, maybe. Been doing them since the 80’s. Old hat. Tbi fuel injection, it has its place. That is if you like no power and poor efficiency.
