For your info, "You were my Doctor" was not really about "self-love". It was very much a form of 4th-wall breaking. David Tennant talking to Peter Davison, the 5th Doctor. I thought it was touching...
@BillinHungary
@BillinHungary 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Tennant said that when Peter came on the set in his 5th doctor wardrobe, David thought "My 11 year old self would be going nuts right now, because as he said in the clip "You were my Doctor!". Even Stephen Moffat said that most of the crew, including himself, turned into fan-boys when the 5th doctor came on the set!

Like the best of Moffat's writing that scene works on a couple of levels IMO. Because you're right, it definitely is 4th wall breaking for sure (whether it's the writer speaking to us or the actor or a bit of both) but it also works in universe as an older man looking back at his younger self, Tennant gives it just the right amount of wistfulness.

The 'you were my Doctor' bit is kind of breaking the fourth wall - it is Tennant talking to Davison, not just the Doctor talking to himself. He was the Doctor that Tennant (the tenth Doctor) watched as a kid in the early 1980s (the fifth Doctor). And, as it happens, Davison is now Tennant's father-in-law. You will see increasing references to the earlier Doctors as the show approached its 50th anniversary, and might want to look into some of that history in a general way - at least see what they looked like. You totally missed pictures of him in John Smith's journal in 'Human Nature', for example.

In Britain, in particular, being gay was a crime and you could go to prison. Prominent gay men would often be seen out with beautiful women, and some would even go as far as to marry and have children to keep their secret. Some even went to their graves without their secret being revealed until many years after their deaths when enough time had passed, and attitudes had changed enough, that those who knew felt comfortable enough to talk about it, because it wouldn't tarnish their memory or image for it to be known they were gay.

There’s a lovely smutty joke here. In the original series The Master often had a goatee beard. The 5th Doctor asks does "The Master still have that rubbish beard." Ten days "No, actually a wife..." A beard is a term used in celeb gossip columns for a straight woman who "dates" a gay man to keep his sexuality hidden....

The Master has always been sort of a gay-coded character (well, perhaps until very recently). During the Pertwee/Delgado era, he came off as being totally into the Doctor and expressing it in various unhealthy and toxic ways. I think both Davies and Moffat picked up on that and sort of ran with it. There's a certain Joker/Batman vibe to their dynamic, which also very much plays as a mismanaged crush a lot of the time. Mrs. Saxon kind of filled the Harley Quinn role in a sense. He broke and used her to get to the Doctor, while having no real interest in her other than as a tool. The "beard" line isn't just a "smutty joke", it's hanging a lantern on decades of subtext.

Cool that you're reacting to this. FYI, that was the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, who played the part between 1981-84. I'm not a massive fan of this mini-episode, but the 'you were my Doctor' scene works beautifully. Tennant did watch the show as a kid, and would have been between 10 and 14 years of age when the Doctor was Davison.

That's The Doctor circa 1982. In classic Who there were a few occasions where time travel would enable the Doctor to meet earlier versions of himself. Most notably the 25th Anniversary special where Five (ish) different versions of the Doctor teamed up. Small matter, Tennant married the other actors daughter.

The Doctor can meet his past (or future )selves as it’s happened in the classic series, it’s nothing to do with parallel universes. It usually happens when the universe or the Earth is in crisis or in this case two versions of the same Tardis merging. The only thing the Doctor cannot do is interfere with his own timeline. For instance the Doctor was ordered to go and kill Davros, thus preventing the creation of the Daleks, but it would be akin to killing a child that history would tell would grow up to be evil. The Doctor knows this would make him as bad as the Daleks. The Doctor would not be able to go back to that time and change his mind.

I enjoyed the hell out of Series 11, but I realize a lot of people are insanely negative towards it. I hope it doesn't put you off. I mean, I'm sure you love something everyone else seems to hate. So I hope others don't put you off and you continue to give it a chance. Who knows, you might love it, too.

Electroshock Therapy for the Soul I liked it too. I disliked the music and some of the writing choices that were made but I immensely enjoyed Jodie’s performance. People just like to get angry.

I agree. I thought Series 11 was mostly decent episodes, some absolutely brilliant, and only one I might call so-so. Nothing that was an absolute stinker. People have complained constantly about the writing and lots of other nit-picky things that I honestly think were pre-judged (for the most part. Definitely a Human's point about _some_ of the writing choices is a valid one, but some of those complainers were jumping on absolutely everything). IE most of the complainers went into it with an already negative opinion and literally _looked_ for things to gripe about as it aired. I just get the impression that when Jodie was announced, they threw their toys out the pram and decided that it would be terrible and resolved to not like it regardless. I've actually seen some people on KZbin _(some, not all)_ making extremely negative comments about writing and themes and acting etc both in individual episodes and the series as a whole, and then they say that they _haven't watched_ any of it because it's bad. Amazing.They call the likers NPC while they haven't actually watched it themselves to form their own opinion. Oh, the irony. I must stress, and I've already said it, this does not apply to _everyone_ who didn't like it. There are doubtless some dislikers who have their own very valid reasons for not liking it and their opinions are to be respected. I suspect they are a minority, though, but that could be simply because the pre-judging group will always shout the loudest so it seems there are more of them than there are.

Paul Curran yes I definitely agree with you. I must admit the finale and the two episodes before that were just not really my thing, but I think Jodie really is awesome in her role and i love 13 to bits. The issues I have are just with pacing and my own personal issues with the tone of the new series. (I know many people wanted a more serious tone, but I’m just a fan of the old silliness, what can I say) I’m really looking forward to a new season tho.

I liked the new season, and I immensely enjoyed the portrayal of the new doctor. I might’ve had a few issues with the writing but it’s still enjoyable and has a lot of potential.
