I think the magic of the UnFairchild is that “overshoot” on the release. Just makes things sound bigger. I remember a long time ago you would describe a lot of in the box compressors of “making it sound smaller” and I totally agree. I almost always use compressors in the box with the fastest release time to keep them from sounding smaller. I’ve never enjoyed one with a long release time in the digital domain.

Why should we limit ourselves to a model once we know what the magic is? What about a new compressor with even MORE overshoot to create something new and better?

Man that was crazy! I’ve been using the UA 670 and the Puigchild for years now and I’ve never been fully satisfied, but I didn’t really know what it was that I felt was lacking. You’re exactly right, either the eq curve of the signal changes, or the compression makes the mix feel further away. The UnFairchild just answered all the questions. The overshoot seems like a big part, in addition to the flatter eq profile. I’ve generally liked the harmonics of the UA 670, but it’s certainly been lacking in other areas. I understand why now! Thanks Eric!

Hmm, ok, I think I'm sold on the Unfairchild plugin. After this shootout and also Mill Sounds comparison of the UAD & UnFairchild. Apart from that the low end extension, there's a lot of fresh open airiness and an attractive colouration to the Unfairchild that you can hear in both presentations. Something I only hear otherwise here in the Acustica. Which to me further suggests that both are UTA & Acustica are reflecting the nature of the hardware units in quite a similar way. I'm sold, I really like how the UTA Unfairchild sounds. The UI is well done too, better than all of the others, UAD VU aside, which I don't care so much about. But, I'm afraid I'll have to wait until it goes on sale. $199 for a compressor plugin is a lot for me. And I'm sure there will be sales, whether this Black Friday or next year. The Acustica sounded really good too, but I hate the UI. And their plugins tend to be resource intensive. And I'm not such a big fan of Acustica as a company.

The only thing I was gonna ask was about the Midnight plug, is it looked like you had the Pre Switch turned off, and also turn the Ultra button on too. It makes a big diff in the Saturation. Its the new thing they are adding to all the Acustica plugs, because from what I understand they aren't really algorithmic, they are Convolution based, and because of that it captures the "picture" really well but not the saturation. But with the ultra you can really push into to real distortion now. Not sure how they do it but I freakin love it.

@h-voltageАй бұрын
@@mrwev Yes, i was gonna say the same thing. The Pre + ULTRA button just adds that low end bloom, and with that on i could match Unfairchild on drums so i could not really hear a difference. Maybe the Pre would add that extra warmness to the vocal's midrange too. Where Midnight obviously sounds different is when you slow down the attack time. Unfairchild just sounds smoother, no matter what you do, Midnight will be more grabby, and snappy. Also you can't go as fast with the release on Midnight.

the unfairchild sounds more even volume wise, which is the goal of a compressor i guess.. on the drum loop, it seems like the side chain section on the unfairchild is low-passed, it doesn't pick up the snare as much as the other plugins, which keeps it less effected. which is also cool.

I mean... I like this host - he's extremely knowledgable and eloquent, but am I the only one who noticed that the other compressors were constantly doing between 7-12 db of gain reduction vs the UTA doing 3-5? Of course the sound is going to feel like it's being "pulled away" from the listener when directly comparing compression differences of that amount. This just was not a very accurate comparison between some excellent plugins.
@GetUpTo88Ай бұрын
Thanks for the comparisons Eric! Did you try adjusting the DC threshold on the UAD versions (the tiny screws at the bottom of the UI)?
@gauthiermatt1Ай бұрын
I don’t think that preferring your plug over the others is taboo. If you didn’t, why even bother making it. If I’ve learnt anything from EV it’s that there is nothing wrong with being unsatisfied with the status quo of gear. I could hear the difference like night and day and the UTA 100% takes the cake for these scenarios.
@LesonDesonАй бұрын
I've done so many of those tests for my own use and measuring integrated LUFS and matching to +/- 0.05dB is the best option, it's very time consuming though. The hardest part of it is often to match GR between compressors that have a threshold and those with a fixed threshold. I understand why you decided in not turning the oversampling on the UTA but on the UTA it totally changes the EQ curve (the oversampling). There was one fairchild in a very famous recording studio in Paris and when I asked if we could insert it, they told me it has been out of service for years. I'm sure the remaining units are all sounding quite different decades after leaving the 'factory'.

This is a doomer take. at a pro level most mixing engineers are just trying to make their mixes “feel good” because the standard of mixing is already pretty high and competitive, so if there’s a tool that improves the feel of your track by even 2-5% it’s worth the investment. It’s a game of inches when you’re competing with other top level mixers.
