This is one of the most weird and forgotten singles of the mid 60s. And No, The B-side was NOT "Feedin' My Dog Named Cat"

The song is a true story. Norma lived in a New York apartment where dogs weren't permitted so got a cat named it Dog, and took it for neighbourhood walks! 😀

Tanega worked for a short time at a mental hospital, where she sang and played songs for patients. She spent her summers working as a camp counselor upstate in the Catskill Mountains. Brooklyn-based record producer Herb Bernstein saw Tanega performing while visiting the camp one summer. Impressed by what he saw, Bernstein introduced her to Four Seasons songwriter Bob Crewe. The two men produced a number of recordings that comprised Tanega's first album was released on Crewe's New Voice Records label in 1966. Her first single, "Walkin' My Cat Named Dog", became an international hit in 1966, peaking at number 22 on both the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Charts, and #3 in Canada. Tanega's impetus for the song came from living in a New York City apartment building that did not allow dogs; instead she owned a cat which she named "Dog" and took for walks.

I remember buying this as a single when I was 10. I used to pay for my older sister and brother to buy the records they wanted, and while they would be off buying Monkees or Beatles or Stones etc. I would be trawling through the weirdo bin of records that NOBODY bought, and just picked ones with cool names. Pressed Rat and Warthog was another fine purchase, along with Quick Joey Small, which I bought not for the song title, but the band name, being Kasenatz Katz Orchestral Circus. I got some great records out of that little singles bin, plus I got a Black Plastic Beatles Hairstyle Wig, for 10 cents. As such a junior Entrepreneur my family thought I may become a great businessman or Economist but I ended up a drug dealer instead, lol, funny old world innit?

During the late 1960s Tanega had a romantic relationship with singer Dusty Springfield.[3]Tanega wrote lyrics to a number of songs Springfield recorded during this period: "No Stranger Am I", "Earthbound Gypsy", "Midnight Sounds", "The Colour of Your Eyes", "Morning (Bom Dia)" and "Go My Love". They remained friends until Springfield's death in 1999. She co-wrote "Dusty Springfield" with Blossom Dearie.

Flora Bunda Sad reason probably is, she was smart, she was talented, she played her own guitar and wrote her own songs, but was not Caucasian. If blonde and skinny, somehow the PR comes right along for you at record speed, but if you're female and of color... well, just listen to the lyrics to her other song, "You're Dead". I did and almost cried because as a female film director of color I knew EXACTLY what those lyrics are about. Racism is real. That's why it never got past 22.

Russ Gordon Thanks for reminder of Mirian makeba, another great artist that I'd forgotten about and had the pleasure of hearing live in Long Beach, late 1960s..

Heather Ferreira Aretha franklin, James brown, Otis Redding, Sam cook, etc. idk if you've ever heard of them though I mean they must be pretty obscure, right?

And today, on a radio station in Los Angeles, this song was played in honor of Asian Pacific month. Otherwise I would not know of this. But I love it. Peace to you all. Be kind, happy, safe.

Fantastic! I only just discovered norma, have got 3 great songs already. Born in '58, i heard lots of great music as a kid, and this is ker-lassic 60s! Equal to cass elliot in tone? Just as delightful to hear anyway! Can just see her as a great art teacher too. All the best fellow music-lovers.

This song was played alot on the local radio station in the mid-sixties. I always liked it. Was so different than anything else on the radio at that time.

I remember hearing this song on the radio in 1966 and saw her sing it that summer on television.I don't know if this is on a program or just a film but I definitely liked this song.I thought she looked younger, but that was 44 years ago.She was 27 in 1966.

I've always LOVED this song. It's only weird if you weren't around during the 60's (poor you). I never ever thought I'd hear it again (and a lot of other oldies, some very obscure). I'm very grateful for this groovy technology!
