pineapples used to be extremely valuable because of the somewhat rare climate it grows in and how hard it was to transport fruit without refrigeration. they used to go for the equivalent of thousands of dollars, and as such were a rare gift. unless the fae have fridges, they are gonna think that we are rolling in it

You’d need a different fairy circle though, cause this one already has an effect placed upon it with the first orange, they don’t have more so just testing out what will happen once for each fruit seems the least likely to have knock on effects on the other, face are animals, not chemicals, giving them 1 thing over and over will effect their behaviour, will make them no longer curious, instability of mood will change it’s status as a constant in this experiment.

You'd have to wait at least 24 hours to repeat it with the orange, otherwise the fickle Fae probably loose interest. And that could lead to unforeseeable consequences. Best case, they don't touch it, or you get the orange thrown at you. Worst case, they get mad and screw around, and now you have a carnivorous Orange on the run, that can only be slayn with a cold iron vorpal sword. And where are you going to find even a normal vorpal sword in this day and age?

As mentioned, the constant is the spot, not the fruit. The test is "does something happen if I put a fruit here" and possibly "are there fruit which doesn't provoke a reaction", not "what does putting an orange here do". Once they've verified which fruit provoke a reaction at all and which seem not to, THEN they move onto new studies based around individual fruit. That's how the scientific method ACTUALLY works, you make an observation, you gather information, you propose a hypothesis, you conduct an experiment to test that hypothesis, you analyze the data the experiment produces, you draw a conclusion, and then that conclusion fuels a new observation that needs testing. Sometimes the new observation is "this experiment previously yielded these results, I wonder if repeating the experiment will consistently yield the same results", which is what you are describing. Sometimes the new observation to be investigated is some other thing of interest suggested by the experiment. In this case the initial observation was "there's a fairy ring, I wonder what I can do with that", then upon gathering information they learned that if you leave an offering at the fairy ring, the fae tend to do things, the hypothesis is "if I leave an offering of fruit, the fae will do things", the experiment is "I'm going to leave different fruit here as offerings to see whether or not the fae do things consistently when offered fruit", the data (so far, the experiment isn't over as we haven't seen what, if anything, the fae do when offered a pineapple, and we've only tried three fruits so far) seems to suggest that the fae do things when offered fruit, confirming the hypothesis, but they seem to do different things when offered different fruit. A new observation based on the previous experiment might be "when offered an orange, the fae cause it to grow legs and skitter away, I wonder if they will do that every time I offer an orange", so you would THEN conduct a new experiment to see if you can get consistent results from offering oranges. As others have mentioned, since fae are animals, and usually animals with human-like intelligence or greater and what you're testing is behavior and not a physical principle or interaction like if you were mixing two chemicals, giving the same stimulus in the same way will alter their behavior and likely invalidate whatever conclusions you might draw from an experiment where you leave an orange in the same spot over and over and over again. For one thing, you don't know if you're dealing with one fae or several, and you don't know what *they* think you're doing, so conducting an experiment like you propose is very unlikely to produce valid results. If you offer the same toy to the same dog in the same way over and over and over again, you cannot extrapolate what that dog does to accurately guess what other dogs would do if offered the same toy in the same way, and unless the dog had been specifically trained to react consistently when offered the same toy in the same way, then I guarantee the dog isn't going to react in the same way every time, and you won't be able to draw any real conclusions from it, because if the dog engages with the toy, that *might* mean the dog likes the toy, OR it might mean the dog likes the way you are presenting the toy, or wants to make you happy, or whatever. On the other hand if the dog *doesn't* engage with the toy, it might mean it doesn't like the toy, or it might mean it doesn't like the way you are treating it. And odds are the dog's reaction will change over time, when the toy is new and interesting, it might engage a lot, but then eventually it might get bored of the toy, or simply not in the mood to play when it's presented, or whatever. Imagine a dog owner presenting their dog with a bunch of different toys one by one to see which ones it reacts to and trying to tell them they need to present the same toy over and over and over again to see if the way the dog reacts to that toy in the same way every time because "repeatability is important in science" *instead* of trying several different toys to see which ones they seem to like before narrowing it down like that. Just because you don't understand the point of the experiment doesn't mean it's poorly designed.

yep, you need to make sure that there aren't other variables your missing and it's magic so it can literally be anything: phase of the moon, time of day, mood, whatever you're thinking about, where YOU happen to be standing might effect what happens (the spooky clawed hand might have happened because they were standing far enough away that it felt comfortable popping in to grab the banana), the cardinal direction of the closest bird. Anything! Hell, each of the documented effects could be caused by different unseen fae all messing around in different ways. Whatever caused the orange to grow legs might have done that to any fruit placed before it, but it happened to be present for the orange and not for any others. although I suppose if you get a whole bunch of data it's still something. The difference between screwing around and science IS writing it down, after all.

Another question for science: It's been said that the Fae have an aversion to iron, with one reason being it's a natural counter to their magic. This gives me RuneScape flashbacks. Anyway, fae magic always has some element of unpredictability. So you have to figure in some kind of statistics and determine wavelengths and crap, basically like meteorology, which is usually wrong. Thus, a traditional scientific experiment based on consistency isn't going to cut it.

i had a dream Bettina uploaded a 7-minute video about a wild interaction she had on twitter (of all places) with some guy who was making some pretty serious accusations against her. it quickly became clear that the accusations were complete nonsense as he was trying to back them up with some baffling twitter logic, and the conversation just went on and on… i’m not sure why dream Bettina decided to make a video out of that interaction - it seemed kinda out of character and petty, since the guy was so obviously in the wrong that there was no real reason to debunk anything he said - but at the end of the day, it was a pretty funny video. anyway, this video just popped up in my recommended and reminded me of it, and it took me a few seconds to realise that was probably a dream…
