Competitive Singles saw the release of Fairy type in Generation 6.
This powerful type was a response to the dominance of Dragon. The most immediately notable trait of Fairy was its complete immune to Dragon type attacks.
Many believe that Fairy is the strongest single type in the game with incredible Offensive and Defensive traits and a very consistent track record.
This is sane. Let's explore Fairy types throughout the years.

I actually grew to be cool with the Bug resist, even as a Bug-Type enthusiast. Bugs dominated Gen 5 and U-Turn is still everywhere, and it grants Psychics with the Fairy Type a handy neutral response to taking 'em. I would not have fear for our horse-friend Magcargo, for surely Mudsdale has instructed him on the importance of EVmaxxing 252 SpA Horsea Bubble Beam vs. 224 HP / 220 SpD Magcargo: 268-316 (84.5 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO Even without any SpAtk investment, an Earth Power would one-shot. However, to avoid any unexpected Horseplay, Magcargo should activate his Shell Smash after being hit to unleash his Horse forme and be able to guarantee a OHKO on Horsea the next turn. All he would require is a Speed EV of 56 a speed boosting nature. Unfortunately, there is no way to defeat Horsea using the flagship move High Horsepower unless Magcargo was willing to dirty his hooves by acquiring the illicit Groundium Z Crystal. For the sake of the Horse Council, I pray that he has not resorted to this knavery.

I really feel like people over exaggerate how good fairy is. It is the best type in the game yes. Especially over time as more good offensive steel and poison types have been introduced I dont think its correct to call it broken. I think the ghost type currently is much more of a problem and needs a type chart change more than fairy for example.
@Glory2Snowstar
@Glory2Snowstar 24 күн бұрын
I actually agree, honestly. Fairy's seen as broken because it's a prime counter to three other incredible Types, and its existence validates a bunch of Poison-Types that otherwise would have rotted in NU. Ghost on the other hand is a LUDICROUS offensive Type, only balanced by Shadow Ball's low BP. I think I'd make Rock resist Ghost, due to tombstones + ceremonial salts, and to give it SOMETHING over Ground.

I feel like there’s a Pokémon that appreciated the addition of Fairy-Types so much that even Game Freak effectively referenced this in The Indigo Disk. Players may recall Lacey having an Exacdrill on her Fairy-Type team, which at first glance only looks like a reference to who her father is. But credit where credit is due for Game Freak making us aware of this type synergy- this thing has winning matchups not only against most Fairy-Types, but also Poison, Steel, and is even a Steel-Type itself that can lure out Fire-Types with its own Ground STAB. The only other Pokémon who even comes close is Heatran, who does quad-resist Fairy and has good matchups into Fire (thanks to Flash Fire), Poison, and Steel, but is also noticeably slower and doesn’t have some of the extra utility Excadrill does, such as Rapid Spin, Sand Rush, and Swords Dance.

About the use of Scald on Tapu Fini in Gen VII that you mention at 28:54, another scenario where it becomes a much better click is when you come back in right as the misty terrain is about to fade (more common when there's a Fini on the opponent's team as well). In that sense, Scald kind of feels like it creates a win-win situation, because you are either safe from status yourself or threaten to spread it. There's also Gen VIII, where defog removes terrain effects, and opposing defoggers suddenly have to fear the burn. Granted, that barely comes up, because the common defoggers all happen to fly anyway (unless they switch out to a grounded physical threat afterwards). But I always thought this was an interesting little interaction, where they might become less inclined to remove hazards in fear of the status. Of course, people probably wouldn't run it based on these fringe cases alone.

I like how fairy is more "symetric" compared to most types. when I say symetric I mean that in most cases it hits super effectively the same types it resists (with a few exceprions) and is weak to the same types that resist it. I wish other types were this symetric.

I get that it'd make things easier to remember but it would probably make balance pretty much like a hideous version of Gen1. The best type is normal or steel. Normal bc it cant be hit super effectively but can hit through movepool everything else supereffectively and steel because it resists everything and must therefore be supereffective on everything. Fighting types wouldnt have enough resistances to be worth it but the moves would be on every single normal type pokemon.

Magearna was banned from gen 8 because of Shift Gear, Calm Mind, Stored Power, and Draining Kiss. That set was impossibly good and made it an unstoppable monster. With team support and its good stats, it was more like a gen 3 top tier in its versatility and EV tweaking, it could literally do whatever it wanted in a team slot and get away with it, while all the other mons struggled to manage their own niches in comparison. I personally think its peak modern competitive design, because that versatility makes for a very interesting pokemon that can cover many archetypes and roles with the right stat spread and items. If more mons were designed like Mag, I think the meta would benefit from it.

Love the detail on Gen 7 OU on this one (not much choice with the release of the Tapus). It gets a bad wrap for being broken but it's still the metagame I choose to play (Gen 7 Ubers ladder sadly doesn't seem to exist on PO anymore) and great to see it covered in detail. All your analysis on it is spot on.

Fairy types really grew on me over the gens. One of my favorite Magearna sets early gen 7 was fightinium z focus blast with ice beam, t bolt and shift gear. It put in a lot of work against common cores like skarm bliss and celesteela/pex/mega venusaur. Gen 8 I used unaware weakness policy stored power clef able to consistently hit high ladder.

One muse I’ve been milling over is how the field of competitive Pokemon would change if the fairy type had been there at the very start, Clefable and Wigglytuff and all their pals with pink power at the get go. It certainly would make or break a fair few Pokemon; I think Gen two Mr Mine would be particularly happy for the buff

It's very interesting in Gen 1, what with so many of the types Fairy interacts with not being around or being near non-existent. Only one Dragon family (and only Dragon Rage to be inmune to), no Steel or Dark, Poison and Fighting practically not being real types... Goes to show how much the game has changed.

@@masterplusmargarita It's fascinating to consider. No real need to counter dragon or fighting, with how powerful Blizzard and Psychic were. Fairies at least don't worry about poison, since none of the poisons could handle psychics. Normal and Psychic would still dominate, but fairy can hit the stride in gen two when dark comes around and none of the steels coped well with fire coverage. Depends if they got good moves too. If Moonblast was there from the start, they'd be fine when gen two rolled up and darks and Kingdra needed a hit, but if they only had the likes of Draining Kiss or Fairy Wind, be a bit of struggle XD

This horse council business has become completely unstable. They are forgetting why the horse council was created in the first place. Only those with a high enough power(of the horse variety) were able to join and control things from behind the scenes. I think it would behoove everyone to reign things in and take a look at the larger picture. They shouldn’t be fighting each other, they should be fighting so seahorses and snailhorses and even ryhorses can get along and control the world from the shadows.

High Horsepower automatically debunks you as a horse, because a draft horse cannot muster more power than it has, and a non-draft horse cannot muster more power than a draft horse, and I doubt there has been any lifeform on this planet that could muster the same power as _100K_ draft horses.

Horsea: Magcargo, are you a horse because you know high horsepower? Or do you know high high horsepower because you’re a horse?
@bubbykins4864
@bubbykins4864 13 күн бұрын
Neither, because 100,000 Horsepower disqualifies you from being a horse. Technically, being a Pokémon should already do so, but being able to muster far more power than Mudsdale doesn't sound like a trait that Mudsdale should have if it were truly equine by Pocket Monster standards, for that would create a paradox, meaning that in order to consider Mudsdale equine, you thus pin the death of every Sada/Turo and the near death of every Arven's Mabosstiff on every Mudsdale that knows High Horsepower.

Although I really appreciate the offensive buffs to (particularly) poison and steel, GF's logic to balance the type chart just wasn't sound. They really needed to introduce a couple new types (round it to 20 we'll say) to craft a better dynamic, because the way they went about it by giving a single new type resistance (or immunity) to the best attacking types and weakness to the worst was just a bad/short sighted band-aid fix to the situation. I think at least the fact Fairy is neutral to itself was a good decision though, better dynamic than dragons flailing their meteors at each other or steels not being able to dent each other with their iron heads. I do agree with you that a type being busted doesn't necessarily mean it can't be balanced around other factors like BST/abilities/moves, and honestly with how insane power creep has gotten I appreciate that mentality more than ever, it's just a shame that for the most part they've gone in the complete opposite direction with Mons like Tapus, Zacian, Xerneas, etc.

Fun fact: in real life European mythology, fairies are't always the sweet little innocent creatures that movies and shows and media are always portraying. They're dangerous pranksters that love to play tricks on people and these pranks can be often be sadistic. That cutesy little innocent look on them is just on act to throw you off guard so realistically dragon types have the right to be scared of them. They know the real lore about fairies.

Tbf Water is super effective vs 3 types and is only weak to 2. But it doesn’t have any immunities. The fact Fairy has 3 resistances AND and immunity feels way too unfair. Steel type is a similar situation but it’s quite weak offensively. And yet Fairy is amazing offensively as well.

@@Begeru very true, I think that it feels overwhelming because it answers the three most offensive types in the game arguably, and it has little answers ESPECIALLY if it has a steel type combo. If klefki had water bubble as an ability (for some reason) in conjunction with magnet rise, it would have zero weaknesses.

Gardevoir was my favorite pokemon before fairy type existed and to this day it is still my favorite. One prime benefit of the fairy type as you discussed is it appears care was taken to (most) pokemon it was given to post launch. Clefable was garbage before fairy type but now its simply well rounded and fits well despite being statistically terrible. I dont think it needs a nerf as long as the same care is taken in design of future fairy types and we dont get more mags.

in gen 7 due to order change being on the same turn as mega evolving and the slight nerf to sucker punch and extra counters made it more challenging for mega mawile but having good defenses intimidate and the highest attack in the game by far (more even than a choice band deoxys-attack) did still make mega-mawile possibly a bit too much especially with having an amazing move set with coverage for every single one of your weaknesses and swords dance and alright utility for doubles via a powerful rock slide. though the slow speed is a bit weakness for sure.
