praise God for the book of James, it clears up so many questions when you have eyes to see and ears to hear. You know the bible speaks about those eyes that cant see and those ears that cant hear. God Bless best regards Ed Hoening

Amen! Minutes 36-38 hit me like a whole truckload of bricks. "Give them a well if you want, but give them the Gospel first." I have been studying James (along with other passages) for the last few months because I've recently been feeling like I need to "do more." I was following along with you in my Bible, pausing and reading, and this sermon made it so clear for me. I want to serve him, but I'm going to stop worrying about "doing enough" and just trust, love, and follow Him. Thank you!

I also personally see the judgement seat of christ as purifying. Think about it. It burns away the wrong we do and leaves only us and our good works. Praise God for the Son!

Yes, a great preacher! So interesting how fewer people listen to solid teaching like this. The proud, self-righteous world loves the good works gospel. Tragic!

Amen! Excellent where you used multiple scripture references/comparisons, to prove NO ONE has ever been or will ever be saved by works (including "OT saints")!!! Dr. Cucuzza's recent sermon ... "How Much of the Bible is for Us Today", is also wonderful to help people understand this truth!

In James 2:14, the word ‘him’ in ‘can faith save him‘ is not a reflexive pronoun, so it doesn’t refer to the man without faith, but refers to the ‘poor’ as in ‘but ye have despised the poor’ in James 2:6. This is because both the pronoun ‘him’ and ‘poor’ are both accusative, masculine and singular! Therefore, James 2:14 is saying, ‘ can faith save the poor’? This again shows that James is not writing about losing salvation without good works.

We are in total agreement about the no loss of salvation or works to maintain salvation, but that understanding of James 2:14 cannot be correct. The “him” is referring back to the audience of James. He is talking to already SAVED believers. He says that “at the judgment” your “faith” will profit you nothing. The judgment isn’t BASED on faith or non faith here. This is clearly a reference to the judgment seat of Christ to all believers BASED upon their works. So James’ point is: BELIEVER, you need to work beyond that of just having faith. The work is to “profit,” and not to be saved. It is for rewards in heaven. Your conclusion of deducing “him” to only mean the poor would (if I interpret you correctly) only result in the same issue that many have with James 2. Thanks for all of the support Kris. - Trent

I follow your logic Trent, yet the grammar for some reason doesn’t quite fit this semantic understanding. I’m puzzled why the pronoun ‘him’ is not reflexive. Besides the word ‘save’ does not always mean save from hell, so perhaps this means the poor are not being saved from their poverty or starvation. Anyway, I much appreciate your response and will give this more thought. I know grammatical and semantic meaning don’t always match in Greek! :)

Is faith active or passive? Pastor ...
@BibleLine
@BibleLine Жыл бұрын
Faith is something you choose to have. You choose to believe something or not believe something. Faith without any works will save you into eternal life. Faith without any works will not be much profit to anyone though. Compared to works, faith is obviously passive in that aspect. You have to get up and be active and do something to actually profit people. My faith alone won’t go and get a loaf of bread for my poor brother. My works will. Nevertheless, our faith in Jesus Christ saved us into eternal life; guaranteed. - Trent

Works are not supposed to be downplayed regarding salvation. Jesus said he will use them during judgment day: *Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29and come forth - those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. John 5:28-29 (NKJV)*

First of all your reading a new translation. I reccomend you just stay with the kjv. Not the new one. It's talking about those that don't believe. If you read earlier versus it says who believe has everlasting life. Those that believe are seen as good because they have imputed righteousness. Those that do evil are not neccesarily the worst offenders by the standards of men. You do not need works for salvation. We were never saved by works! You should do good and will be rewarded for it.

@@RoughRiderElk Here's the KJV version: *Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John 5-28-29 KJV* The context does not change: all that are in the graves. That definitely includes believers and non-believers. It really comes down to how you define "they who have done good". Here's how the bible defines it, still according to the apostle John: *And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. Revelation 20:12 (KJV)* Clear as daylight. Works are instrumental for salvation in the eyes of Jesus. And Jesus is the ultimate judge who can say who is saved or not.

The context helps to understand John 5:28-29. How would you explain verse 24? Do we need to believe in Christ, or do we need to have works? Are we born again by good works, or is faith in Christ’s work what gives the new birth? We cannot ignore all of John 1:1-5:27 and snag John 5:28-29 to make it say whatever we want. Clearly to “do good” unto the resurrection of life is to believe the gospel message IE to believe in the finished work of Christ. - Trent

@@BibleLine *Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24* Why do we have to make verse 24 contradict verses 28-29. Jesus said (1) he came to pay a ransom and (2) he will judge all men during the last day. Is it possible that some will be saved by the ransom he paid and some will be saved by his judgement? Is it possible that being ransomed is availed by believing the gospel message and doing good will get a favorable judgement from Him? You just said the verse. If one believes in Him, that person skips the judgement. If one doesn't, Jesus will still judge his his or her works to determine if that person is worthy to be saved. This concept makes someone who never have a chance to hear the gospel have a decent shot of being saved. And it is Jesus whos final say of the result. No contradiction, Jesus is still the only way. What do you think?

@@BibleLine Look friend, if you keep on pitting works against faith, you are limiting those who can be saved. I understand we are instructed to preach the good news, the gospel and that's what we should do. We should share the finished work of Christ and hopefully our audience gets to believe it so they will avail the ransom paid by Christ. But the bible is clear that we should not belittle works when it comes to salvation. We were never instructed to say works is not a reason someone will be saved. On the contrary, we were shown how valuable they are to Christ. He emphasized that what we do to our fellow men is equivalent to our service to him. You got to get this right. All I'm sharing is the bible states that works are valuable commodities used in the final judgement, which is the point when we ultimately know if we made it or not.
