@trsskater

A lot of times it's because they don't understand why it's cheaper. If you think it's the same thing you wouldn't buy the more expensive one. And some companies do sell stuff that is the same thing and just more expensive because we associate price with quality. And sometimes the most expensive items aren't as good as the moderately priced ones. Or the difference is not enough to be worth the extra price. Like is it worth the extra money to buy the EK Z3D chain vs an RK SXO? Just because the EK is more expensive doesn't mean you are getting more for your money.

Used to work in engineering back in the UK in the 1980's. Those Evo Tech guys remind me of the best that I worked with; their whole sense of who they are is wrapped up in the products and business. Another fantastic piece of work by you, John. The first half of the video, with Chris and Dan, was fascinating and it’s great to hear two guys at the peak of their game describe what makes their products worth the investment. Then onto the second half and some truly sobering information from Phil Lewis. How many “bargain hunters” know of the role they are inadvertently playing in funding organised crime and even international terrorism?

I knew someone who bought cheap non branded crash bars for his new BMW R NINE T. One of the lower fixings for the bars replaces the bolt that goes through the frame into the block. As he was torquing it he heard a loud crack, and soon realised the problem. The supplied replacement bolt for the crash bar was too long for the threaded hole in the engine, only by a couple of mm but that was enough to crack the crank case when tightened up. A 12 grand bike ruined by a £50 part. I must admit I've got Chinese bar end mirrors on my bike that look great and have been absolutely fine, but I think when you're looking at anything functional beyond the aesthetics, you should buy from a reputable company.

What I wasn't aware of before watching your video was the extent the counterfeiters go to, and the impact this is having on the manufacturers being copied. It must be absolutely infuriating knowing that not only are your ideas and designs stolen and reproduced, but that quality is sub-par and your brand name will be damaged by erroneous reviews. Im a fitter turner, tool maker, machinist and a welder fabricator. I was on tools for 17yrs making everything from jet units for boats to hips, knees and shoulders. I made nuts, bolts, screws and many other simple things as well. I watched as 40% of my workload went to china, i was made redundant 4 times before i finally gave up and did something else. I understand where the loss is. I also understand why people want to buy elsewhere, especially here in NZ. Most of the product you get here is imported because businesses like the ones i worked for end up out of business and you cant get those things made here anymore. The thing that rips my shorts though is that it gets bought in by a middle man who puts a whopping markup on and then the store puts their markup ( often large as well) on top of the mark up. I look at the UK and USA and think how lucky you are, i see your prices and then look at the ones from our stores and even with conversion of currency, we pay almost 3 times what you do for the same gear! Also, guys, if you want to showcase what you do, show a dude that is wearing PPE when blowing swarf off stuff. I've seen people lose eyes doing what he did. We have a guy i worked with we called lemsip cause without his eye he looked like he was sucking on a lemon and all squinty. WEAR PPE!!! ATGATT PEOPLE!!!

I’ve bought a few products direct from Evotech and they’re top-notch quality. As others have said, why on earth spend £15K-£20K on a bike then skimp on bolt-on parts? It’s a false economy. Problem is some other manufacturer charge ridiculous prices (£170 for a single-piece plastic mudguard!), and this leaves the market open to cheap fakes. The long-term issue that people buying cheap fakes don’t understand (or perhaps care about) is that IP theft will result in manufacturers like Evotech will give up. The fakers don’t design anything, they don’t (3D) scan the bikes, so either you won’t get any more products, or they’ll be total rubbish. Unfortunately China has found it very difficult to enforce IP protection, so it is better for customers like us to vote with their feet, ignore FB, Amazon, Alibaba et al. Just skip one evening meal down your local restaurant, you now have the money to buy the original product!

As an engineer its great to see them analyse the fake product materials and production methods the copycats use and then explain the differences in the real products. People will always think there are cheaper alternatives that are better than nothing at all - what this shows is that in fact fitting cheap knock offs may make things far worse than fitting nothing. The average person has no idea about material type, manufacturing, hardness and finishing that make the parts reliable and safe.

Another great video by your team. On a similar theme to the bike leathers video you did, you can’t protect people from themselves with their own buying habits! Even in the comments here there are suggestions that UK manufacturers are greedy, talk of inflated profit margins and that people will still buy the cheap knock-off shite because being cheapest is people’s only factor in making a buying decision. I feel sorry for people who have been genuinely duped into thinking they’ve bought a ‘genuine’ product, but if you’re buying new parts off eBay/Amazon/AliExpress when legitimate manufacturers have their own websites you can order from - then the clues are all there! It’s great that there are anti-counterfeit authorities who are trying to protect manufacturers, but it’s the buyers who need the information and education and I suspect a lot of that effort will fall onto deaf ears.

It's all down to design and tooling though as they explained. If something 'will fit' from another model, obviously it's an easy swap. But most won't. The investment needed in tooling for an older bike that isn't current and isn't being made anymore will most probably outweigh the return. I'm the same with my 2003 R6, although immaculate, it's old now and can't get much for it anymore, apart from levers and bobbins.

I'm really glad you make these videos so we can understand why these parts are so expensive. It almost feels unreasonable when you think it's just a simple part. And what they are doing goes beyond better quality. It's to do exactly what they intend for it to do. I have found companies like Atlas that claim to make it a there stuff in house to find out from some Chinese sellers they were making it from before Atlas as a established. So they are pretty much up selling Chinese parts although made in Taiwan where labor is cheaper. As where Evo Tech is actually researching and teating to make good parts.

And they're other stuff was pretty much the same difference in price. This may not be true for all they're gear, I never checked, but there site is bookmarked with me because if it's only a nine quid difference for something that supports local jobs and economy I reckon its worth it.

Excellent work, very informative. It was really interesting to see behind the scenes at Evotech too ... they really put a lot of effort into producing high quality British made parts. I love that they even make their own bolts 😊

What makes this all worse is the UK based client who has bought a cheap part, that damages their bike, and then tries to chip the local workshop down on price , as they have already spent a good bit of their budget on the "Wrong thing" in the first place. This is a huge problem.

Then again as counterargument: I've got a set of Arashi rearsets these things are now offered by brands like Hotbodies and Accosatto only difference: the silkscreen and they close to doubled the price Also I also have a set of Evotech adjustable levers, I'm pretty sure Pazzo came up with the mechanical system

BMW makes engines and accessories in China and then sells them in Germany or other countries. Stop being hypocritical. All equipment manufacturers do the same. I invite my fellow motorcyclists to pay more attention to the labels and instructions from France, for example, where the small print "printed in China" appears, and on the product it is written, "made in France" or another EU country.

Great piece. When you see the guys and the set up at Evotech you understand why their products are so good. It brought up some very interesting points on tax and jobs as well and wider criminal impacts.

Wish I had seen this before ordering from the big on line site, I didn't realise that it was coming from outside the uk. Looks like I will have to put it down to experience and the old saying "Buy cheap, buy twice will apply.

I have purchased many many EvoTech parts - crash bobbins, tail tidies, etc. Always from them direct. You get what you pay for and I'm glad to pay their prices. I have an S1000RR M and wouldn't cheap out on crap from eBay it has genuine Evotech stuff on it. The worse thing about them is they are sometimes out of stock!! Thanks John for the great video.

@@bennettsbikesocial I think they're referring to the clutch, oil, stator, etc cases on the sides of the bike. you could argue that the oggys fulfil this job but if evotech is listening: if you make it people will buy it

Personally I have no issue with where things are made, as long as the quality control is there. But copying someone else's hard work - wherever they are - is just plain wrong.

Very good and informative video, the money involved is truly staggering, some main online selling places need to step up and cut the fake sellers out rather than just thinking of there own profits. Also yes EvoTec stuff is top quality and just fits.

I've used the Evotech tail tidy before on a Thruxton 1200 R which was a work of art, so well designed to stop mud/water entering the underside on the bike whilst retaining the ability to use the stock indicators for the retro look. All the parts lined up and all the bolts fitted perfectly making the fitting process a pleasure.

To be fair, there's a lot of incredible technology and engineering that comes out of the Far East; counterfeiting is organised crime that, for now, appears most prevalent in the same region.

Brilliant video John. I think Facebook and eBay have a big responsibility as they are enabling. As you said with the last part, how can a private seller have 100s of parts for sale. They have the tech to be able to do something about this, we as voters and consumers need to hold them accountable.
