We take a deep dive into the seedy underbelly of moto gear with knock-offs, fakes and grey market with more shades than Dakota Johnson herself can handle. Of course, in true wholesome FortNine fashion, we test the gear to destruction. Oh boy, this might get expensive…
Gear Breakdown:
Real AGV Helmet - frt9.co/tbhi6a
Real Alpinestars Gloves - frt9.co/lfcumf
Real Dainese Jacket - frt9.co/7dtwrs
Fake Gear - Seriously? After all that?

Those grey market stories were really fascinating

Well, there was no mention about some sources of gray market goods. Real goods with real quality can move also from one market area to another. Or wholesellers, distributors etc. having excess inventory or reducing stock, bankruptcies of shops or middle-men (auctions) etc. Exhibition/sales samples. Goods coming from all these sources are legitimate high quality goods, just cheaper than usual.
@Stephen-wc8fn
@Stephen-wc8fn 4 жыл бұрын
pffyespff yep, I was disappointed that he didn’t mention that point because it’s the most common source of grey market products. He might be showing his retailer bias - they hate it when consumers buy products outside the local distribution channel so he’s hoping to scare consumers away from using anything except the official local seller.
@sentienthamster

Grey market items are usually the exact same product sold for way less markup in countries that are not as well off as most of us. My company bought some oddly cheap Cisco network gear once that we found out was unable to be used in the US. We had to pay a "re-certifying" fee before they would let us pay for support.

A thing to add with that final Grey market story. Sometimes factories mess up or some textiles and materials are a bad batch, so instead of tossing them and wasting those materials they'll "Throw them out" for another factory (Typically with all the same workers just on the night shift) to go dumpster diving and finish off the products with the bad materials and cheaper nuts and bolts and made with less time and care put into them. Or sometimes they're just straight up reject jackets that instead of destroying it finds it's way online.

Thanks for covering these categories Ryan. Keeping in mind, this analysis and product categories exist for all other products and not just motorcycle equipment. There are similar cases but not as dangerous. Clothing stores that sell overrun or irregulars in the attempts to recover some cost of manufacturing where there was a mishap in final production phase. I.e., TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Ross, etc.

I'd say buying brand name overstock for plain clothing is fine, because a production defect there would only lead to a $20 genuine Ralph Lauren polo looking slightly off. But when safety is concerned... there's no compromise. Just like you won't skimp on brake pads or seat belts, your moto gear is there to save your life if you hit something solid at high speed.

I am investigating the market for my 1st bike, and of course all the equipment that is imperative to wear, to be safe as possible! I went to a local small shop, to see a Honda CB650R, new (I know my way with cars, and I am sick of secondhand car issues, and I guess with bikes are the same, but much more exposed if something goes wrong!) But the guy was pretty vague, I had to interrogate him, and still I wasn't sure about boots, trousers, helmet, etc. And I look funny on the 650R, because I kinda look like I wanted to get a horse, but I got a donkey, referring to size. I find your videos very helpful, and I enjoy watching you! I want to thank you for your hard work! And When I see that YammyNoob is referring to you as a achelon, and I enjoy them too, it's clear that you are at a professional level. Keep up the good work! I salute you!

My thoughts on the first knockoff comparison with the ROSSI R helmet: Not only is plastic more prone to shattering compared to carbon fiber but it’s also much much much more prone to flex, which is why you should never pay less than $100 for a motorcycle helmet that WILL kill you compared to paying $2k and ensuring your safety and impact protection. What’s the point of cheapin out if you don’t get the same level of safety and comfort. Since the knock off helmet has less layers in between the external body work and the cheek pads, it’s probably gonna make your face hurt. Why is this knockoff even legal to be sold at all? That the question I have. I like the theme and drama of this video, keep up the engaging content style because it’s amazing.

Also, i started getting calls from China to change my review in exchange for a "Free gift". I of course told them to piss off. However when i reported it to Amazon and asked how they got my phone number, Amazon shut me out and now i can't dispute it or place reviews. Not even mark if it was 3 or 5 stars etc. Sort of makes you wonder doesn't it? Now i only buy gear direct or from other sources.
