I tend to setup a lot of transceivers for businesses and amateur operators. Usually, the radios are shipped straight to my home. I got three Baofeng FP-F8HP hand held transceivers and set them up and also ordered Nagoya 771 antennas. But they turned out being counterfeits, which I noticed immediately. But I put them on their transceivers and sent them on their way. Every single one of the fakes broke the capacitor inside the antenna and lost the dual band ability in three months time. I then ordered different Nagoya antennas from a different vendor and got the real ones. As far as I know, the three Baofengs are still working with the real antennas.

Really enjoy all your videos. I have a Baofeng UV3 and that 771 knock-off antenna:) The UV3 has all the same deep menus of baffling features as a UV5... but has the 2 Watt output of a 888 walkie. I have tested the 771 against the short original antenna on the UV3. This is where it gets complicated... BIG difference on VHF 144MHz, not a big difference on UHF 440MHz. Seems to be the case that VHF really needs longish antennas, and UHF (because of its much higher frequency) will do very well on 6 inch antennas. If you look at the little T1 you tested, the little built-in antenna is simply too short even for UHF. That said, Baofeng has obviously optimised the length of the little coiled wire in its stumpy bump of an antenna, because it does actually manage amazingly well, doesn't it? On your walk to the flyover, the T1 got surprisingly close to the 888... except it suffered dropouts when you were in some low points. So it CAN do some decent range, but is more of a fair weather sailor if you encounter some terrain along the way:) In an ideal world it would have 7 inches. (And in that ideal world I would be 7 inches too;)!! There is a modest upgrade that I found delivers a bit of audio quality and a few hundred yards of range on BOTH VHF and UHF, and it's using either a Nagoya 701 or the slightly longer 666 (I buy knockoffs as well:) The NA-701 is about 7 inches and the NA-666 is around 8 inches, and they only cost a few dollars for the "SMA Female" versions for these popular 888 and UV5R walkies. Your videos provide important real-world comparisons, and can even settle some arguments. There is another fellow on KZbin who hacks his BF-T1 antenna with a longer length of floppy wire that dangles out of a hole he drilled in the top of the antenna bump on the case. Fair enough - but he either got a dud unit or he is prone to exaggerating outrageously, because he says that a T1 will only work over a hundred yards or so. You have proved that is bunk! You got close to a half mile... and now we have your range test on KZbin forever to settle the matter. Cheers Ross vk1fcbx Australia.

Thanks Ross for all the information there. Extending the antenna on the Bf-T1 does not always equal extra range due to the SWR issue.

You think that's good? Last night I was listening to Yorkshire PMR446 club at Holme Moss on the standard antenna.........in Irlam, Salford UK, that must be 20+ miles away and they were conversing with Runcorn and Bolton. I heard them all pretty good but the Holme Moss (elevated location) was exceptional. That standard aerial, especially with a 16cm counterpoise attached is far better than most users appreciate.

For me RT22 is better radio than BF888s. The same range. Better for the pocket and the antenna can not be broken. The only plus in the BF888s is what can be placed an external antenna. It should be a base radio, cheap radio for a house or a car. Because there is also a battery eliminator for him. But as a practical handheld, the RT22 and WLN KD-C1 are better.
