Thanks for this contribution. I was "abused" (not physically) by an unqualified "psychotherapist" two years ago. It set me back massively. The NHS has not been providing any help in the last four years. It's crazy. What is going on? I found a BBC item about unqualified therapists. When I tried to follow the links to internet sites, such as Unsafe Spaces (.com, .co.uk) they seemed to have vanished. What is going on in the UK? It's bad enough that the NHS is not providing adequate mental health services. Now, very unwell people are at the mercy of "charlatans"!

I am a therapist and time and time and time people have been elsewhere and they have had bad things happen. I wish I could call these therapists out. There making more money that me. It’s a joke, why is it not regulated? I don’t understand. It needs to be a protected title.

100% agree. I paid thousands of dollars only to find out he wasn’t even licensed. He shared my info with his bozo girlfriend. They are both profiting off desperate women in abuse situations. Makes me so mad.

This was a much-needed and very well informed video man - kudos for that. I feel that due to the very reasons you outlined, the U.K is currently a mine-field for private therapy clients who know little to nothing about accreditation or modalities.

WalkingTheWoods I would agree on a number of levels. It’s important to have accreditation from a body that recognise appropriate qualifications. That can be from a number of bodies, but therapists need to be able to show they have experienced appropriate training. Thanks for the support bro!

I find this so infuriating, when those of us that do train, take many years and lots of hard work to do so. I originally trained as a counsellor and am now a forensic psychologist, so I guess at least the latter is protected. However, it's so worrying that people without sufficient training are working with people who are often in great distress.

Jo Robinson I really couldn’t agree more. It’s very concerning that this can happen, and when it does as always the client suffers. Thanks for your input

@P T I studied counselling first and qualified in 2011, then in 2018 I qualified as a psychologist. When I qualified as a counsellor there weren't a great deal of jobs available - it was mainly volunteering roles. The problem with volunteer roles is that it devalues the profession (in my opinion). I did find some paid work, but it took me a while and I was volunteering up to that point.

@P T I have never seen a role for a 'voluntary' psychologist. There are sometimes roles for 'honorary/voluntary' assistant psychologists which can help in your application to a psychology doctorate, but I've never seen a job advertised for a qualified psychologist where they are working on a voluntary basis.

While I was dating my ex she was diagnosed with BPD. For over a year I tried to convinced her to see a psychologist to no avail. Several months later I run into her website where she positioned herself as a psychologist without any education background, accreditation or licensing. A bit dangerous, right?

@GetPsyched If someone has trained as a "rapid transformational therapist" that doesn't really qualify them to practice right? Especially since they don't have a bachelor's in psychology.

Here is the sad thing, you could have 6 PHD degrees form Harvard, but you are unlikely to get many subscriptions. It's not the degree people are tuning into, it how well they relate to you. You are already at at a huge disadvantage because you are a man (I am male too my the way). Social media is women's domain for this service. If you want the subscriptions, you will have to get a whole lot more emotional, having NPD probably would help you too. Tell everybody you're a life coach and offer them therapy for 300 dollars an hour, this is the game thy are playing and it works. It's not really what you say that counts for much, it how you say it.

Had a woman sourced by my ex who claimed to be a Play Therapist...to work with my child on Separation Anxiety...After a few weeks of questionable practice and some digging she refused to disclose her qualifications or provide written feedback to me. When I traced her online presence. Only listed adult services on all her information. I think she was possibly a friend who was not qualified. I have also seen Dads on Twitter state similar situations where Womens Aid workers/social workers have faked expertise to help manipulate contact arrangements for the Mother.

Thanks for this.Very helpful and clear. Have to say that I am not interested in further accreditation as my course was accredited and that feels enough... I am registered though and fully qualified and still learning...Don't have a website.

I know of such a person who has now managed to get funding and opened a trauma centre. This worries me as she is dealing with not just adults but children also
