The can opener looks and sounds exactly like my grandmother's. When you use it it's like I'm back at her house during summer vacation and I can hear her cooking supper in the kitchen. We'd watch Jeopardy together on a tiny CRT TV that sat on the kitchen counter and eat at the table. It brings back really happy memories so thank you.

The $80 price tag is a lot since that can only makes 20 servings of 4oz each. That's a total of 5lb, and ground beef usually costs around $6/lb today. That's a $50 premium for freeze drying it.

@coreyking1009 Жыл бұрын
Was just going to comment the same thing, I do this sometimes It won't work as a survivalist option the way these cans are generally kept. But , if you cook your real beef from raw first, and then mix in the plant based stuff after (a 50/50 mix) and let the two simmer together for another 10 mins it really takes on the beefs flavor. If you cook onions with the beef from the start, it's delicious. Could do this with the canned beef and it would last twice as long

I don't think the old can opener is dying. Seems like a switch is failing which you MAY be able to tear apart and just clean the switch or search for another. Should be a switch that when you lay the lever down it engages the motor. The motor sounds healthy. So no, I wouldn't suggest retiring it, just find out if the switch is failing or just very dirty.

@marypalmer00 Жыл бұрын
You gotta soak beans, cook them. This just comes pre-cooked so it's not a rip-off
@mainetreelineruguess97 Жыл бұрын
Anyone can make their own dried beans for a fraction of the cost of the ready made stuff. Dollar Store beans work great and once cooked, dehydrate them. The look a little strange afterward, but rehydrated and flavored, and they are good to go for a fairly inexpensive protein source. They are also very filling. With the meat supply being restricted, expensive, and over-medicated with who knows what, seeking out an alternative protein source might not be a bad idea. Also, the 'meat alternative/TVP' is soy/tofu. Soy is a GMO product, for folks who are trying to stay away from that. Still, in a SHTF situation, food is food, right?
