Many ornamental flowers and cut flowers are TOXIC. ALWAYS do your own research and take responsibility for the plants that you introduce around your kids, pets, and everyone else. Use common sense when handling plant materials: wear gloves, always wash hands, avoid contact with face, etc. NEVER consume any plant which has not been positively identified with complete certainty to be safe and edible. Before planting anything, research to determine whether specific flowers are considered invasive where you live or if there are laws that apply to their planting in your area.

What is "@freshcutky"?
@freshcutky documents the pursuit of my goal of one day owning my own cut flower farm. Along the way, you'll see random projects, cooking, and of course - growing stuff. I'm not an expert, and would never claim to be. There's always more to learn - this is my journey. The purpose of my blog, and other social media accounts (including KZbin) is to share ideas. I just learned this year about cool flowers. It is such a blessing. Our summers are so hot, often above 105, that everything just struggles. My calendula just barely hung on during the heat and now during the winter they have continually bloomed. It's so cool that we can enjoy cool flowers because it's so difficult during our hellish summers.Thanks for your info!

Thank you so much! You have given us so much information. I had no idea how many of these flowers are cool weather flowers. I did not realize that you are working towards a cut flower garden. I thought you already were doing it. I would like to do a cut flower garden too, and I have given myself a year to learn and decide. I need to try and grow a lot of these seeds. Again, thank you for all the information. I failed 3x with Scabiosa last spring/summer. Now I know why. Thank you! Thank you!

I will be trying to put cut out pots where I want the plants with some fresh soil so I don't pull out seedlings thinking they're weed seeds (which is what I've done in the past).

The milk jug winter sowing is very susceptible to algae/moss growth and also just root rot from too much moisture. I used to run out and put the caps back on when I knew we were getting alot of rain but I think better drainage alone would work. As a funny aside, being from the northeast, I kind of did a double take when you said we should just take this as a God ( wondering now if there's a difference in how you say God and guide) 😂

@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 жыл бұрын
I find that it's easier at transplant time for some varieties. For example, something like feverfew, has really robust seedlings that I can quickly pull apart and shove into the dirt. I still use cells for some of the smaller seeds and more delicate plants. Hope that helps! 🌱

Last winter inspired by your WS videos I placed a huge order with Johnny's, most were amazing successes, and now I'm a little bit hooked. They were a lot of work took forever to grow into anything barely plantable and I swore I'd never do it again but my flowers were the talk of the neighborhood this year so there is that need for validation again driving me to do insane things and commit a bunch of time I don't have. Ok so my question is are grocery store seeds any good, i.e. Columbine and should those be planted now? My Columbine never germinated last year using WS. You mentioned a cut in half jug, did you mean with or without a lid to protect through winter? I'm so confused with the fall planted seeds.I need charts and diagrams, lol. Also I was thinking about trying a weird direct sow/Winter Sowing combo method bc hoping to save time on transplanting. It gonna look crazy having clear oj jugs in my flower beds but maybe I'll hide them under some leaves, I'm sure the neighbors won't mind, lol. Thanks in advance.

It's definitely a lot of work. In reference to the milk jugs, I cut them in half and then only use the top half as a mini greenhouse, making sure to secure it to the ground with landscape pins. I've heard of people doing the same thing with direct sowing winter sowing seedlings into the garden in the spring. I hope I explained that well. Also, the fall seeds that I had sold out pretty quickly. I'll likely have more available for next season coming this January.

Have you done a video on best seed sources for germination and details how-to grow for flowers? I've been buying my flower seeds from the online Park and Burpee catalogs. Then I buy some local seeds from the Ferry Morse and Burpee displays at big box stores. This fall I had 5 packets of snaps planted in same tray Sep 12. 3 from Park, 1 from FM local store, 1 from Burpee local store. Less than 5% from Park or FM sprouted while I got almost 50% from the Burpee? Makes me want to give up on Park! I buy some veggie seeds from Johnny's but their flower seeds seem to be directed more to commercial growers than just folks like me wanting nice flower beds around my home. I saw Gardener Scott's KZbin list but he did it for veggies more than flowers.

We’re in Zone 7a, but we do get a lot of snow. Do you think I’m too late to soak and presprout my ranunculus, and then plant those out in my low tunnel? I’ve got the heaviest agribon frost blanket on that and a thick plastic.
@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 жыл бұрын
I would definitely worry about starting ranunculus now. If they don't have the right temperatures, the corms will just rot. I learned that lesson the hard way. At this point, I think it would probably be better to wait until late winter to start them indoors and then transplant outside into very early spring after the coldest weather has already passed. I hope that helps. Good luck!

I just use whatever I have on hand. Sometimes, newspaper or notebook paper - but usually I just grab a stack of printer sheets from work. Doing it this way is much less time consuming than soil blocking. By the time I'm ready to transplant, the paper is totally gone. 🌱🌱🌱🌱

@TONYAwiththeflowers
@TONYAwiththeflowers 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have much experience with snow, honestly. However, I always make sure to go out and knock the snow off if things look as if they might collapse. Ideally, the agribon should be secure enough to handle most conditions. Also, I never water in the winter. If it's warm enough to need watering, the row cover shouldn't be on the plants.
