Great video! Thank you for taking the time to record and give all the info. It's hard to take video when you're so excited about fishing. I was just fishing down in Marine Area 13 and caught some chinook 10 inchers. I didn't get much for sea runs though. I will have to tie up some of those white conehead patterns. Reminds me of a wooly bugger or something. I will have to check out your other videos for fly patters. Oh, another good resource I found is this guy Nick Clayton (I think). Check out some of his videos. Some informative Puget Sound fly fishing stuff. Anyway, thanks for sharing!

Glad you included a bit about lines as they’re critically important, especially in these colder temps that we fish in. I once made the mistake of thinking I could get away with using SA Grandslam in colder climate…I learnt otherwise, kinks like telephone cord, but in the tropics, it’s perfect. Gold, Anadro or Outbound work well for me.

You are right: having an appropriate line is maybe the most important key to success, or at least having an enjoyable day fishing. I'm sure there are conditions when Quick Shooter is terrific, but I haven't experienced those conditions yet. I've tried several of the Outbound series, and can't fault them for fishing local waters. I recently put SA Sonar Titan on a new 6wt outfit, and love it.

Great video Timothy! Thanks. I’ve just started fly fishing for sea runs in the Gulf Islands and it is so much fun. Our fish are in the 17 - 22” range which makes them great sport … they are strictly catch and release here. Can you tell me under what conditions would you use a surface pattern like the Miyawaki popper? I’ve been mostly using the rolled muddler in tan and a mickey Finn style in red and white or blue and green … all seem to be effective. I’m getting out every couple of days so I want to experiment a bit, but I’m really unable to discern what is tide related, time of day related or pattern related! Nothing like experience and field notes I guess! Anyway, thanks. Would appreciate your thoughts on the surface pattern question.

You're lucky! Fish in that size range are considered quite exceptional down here. Basically, if you've found where the fish are, then a surface pattern will work. You'll likely get many more hits than you would on your streamer patterns, but you'll only get a hook-up with a fraction of them. For some folks, missing so many fish is just too frustrating to be bothered with surface patterns, but I enjoy the action! I started a fishing log last year, and it is definitely going to be helpful in the long run, but several factors seem to generally hold true: fishing is best where there's some type of current, when the light levels are low, and where there's some structure on the beach (rocks, oyster beds, submerged snags). I find I get better results fishing the top-water patterns when there's a bit of ripple on the water (although I've occasionally hooked fish in glass-smooth water). I swing them in the current, and retrieve them just fast enough to produce a consistent wake.You really don't need to make them sputter or 'pop'. These patterns really come into their own in situations when it would be difficult to fish a streamer: at low tide over eel-grass beds, or where there are large submerged boulders on the beach for instance. I don't think you need to start with more than a couple of patterns, the Miyawaki popper (either tied with the traditional stinger hook , or on a tube, as described in my video on the subject) and the mini-gurgler. Colors aren't too important. Sometimes, the fish will prefer one over the other, I haven't figured out why, but I'll bet it has something to do with sky conditions. Hope this helps, or at least gives you the incentive to try out these patterns! Tim.

@@timothybird7008thanks so much for this information. I went out for an hour this afternoon and landed one 17” fish on a streamer. I then switched to a large Tom Thumb and immediately had a follow to my rod tip but unfortunately after about 3 or 4 casts I drowned that fly … I only had an intermediate sink leader with me which I thought I could make work! I changed to an oversized Miyawaki popper (my inexperience with the pattern) and soon had another follow … but then it seemed the bite went off as high slack approached. I’m going to watch your other video and tie up some other flies based on that. I met another angler earlier this week and he had caught a 23” fish down the beach over a drop off beyond the eel grass a couple of days earlier. I’m determined to land one of those!

That's true for fabric, but wet neoprene gloves are not likely to remove any more slime than wet human skin. That said, most folks I know fishing the cold PNW salt just wear latex or nitrile medical type gloves. Easy on the fish, and keep your hands dry and thus surprisingly warmer than bare hands.
