It's called the torque setting. I forgot to adjust lower when planting daffodils and seriously injured my hand when the auger caught on a root. Erin is right. Start at the lowest setting!

Agreed! And if you have very rocky soil with lots of tree roots, a planting auger is not for you. ALWAYS use both hands, lowest torque, and go slow.

I actually do know what it does--and I love your videos!! We can thank my grandmother, the gardener, and my grandfather, the carpenter, for this handy trivia, though. The big dial you're adjusting is the clutch for the drill. It determines how much resistance the drill will accept before it stops spinning. It does this mostly to help you avoid stripping screws. If you do take it all the way over to the little screw icon (also the hammer, if yours is a hammer drill), it disables the clutch and will keep spinning regardless of the amount of resistance it senses. The black slider on the top/back part of the drill is a 3-speed transmission. The lower the number, the slower the speed and the higher the torque--and the more control you have over the tool. Very much like gearing your car down to drive in snow. In most cases using it as a garden auger, transmission on 1 and a clutch setting at 3 or above (depending on how hard your ground is) is probably where you want to be. Pro tip: Give the tool breaks. If it starts getting hot enough to smoke, stop using it, take the battery out, and put it somewhere where the motor can cool of. Otherwise, you've got yourself a nicely expensive doorstop. Please don't ask me how I learned THAT one.

I soooo enjoy your videos. You make the average gardener happy to know we’re ok with how we work in our gardens. I’m always smiling when watching. 😊 Idea💡for your plugs for your pots at the cottage. How about placing the marked plastic bag of them in your glove box in the car so when you are there working on the pots they are already with you. Also, put a reminder on the calendar of your phone for approximately when you could be at the cottage in the spring that the plugs are in the car. 🚙 Thank you again for all the support and information you share. Love you to pieces.

I live in Texas, zone 8b. Two winters ago we had a sudden -4 degree cold snap which is much lower than our normal "cold," which averages about 45. My huge, 30 year old live oak developed exploded bark, like somebody blew up a balloon underneath the bark. There are huge cracks and open spaces all the way around the trunk, but so far it seems to be surviving. I'm hopeful! Oh, wow! Snow!

I love every phase of Bulgaricum. I get so darn excited for it every year! My husband was drilling when he had a bandage on his thumb. Oops. He pinned himself to the new subfloor he was putting in our hallway. I saved him, but only after I took a picture to share with family. And thank you for the comments re. whole leaves on the lawn. Similarly to the "right" way to compost, I am constantly seeing posts admonishing us to leave our leaves because they aren't going to hurt anything. Um, yeah, they are. We will mow/mulch and put them in the beds thank you very much.
@TheImpatientGardener Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure why but it often seems like some people feel that garden advice can’t be nuanced. It doesn’t always have to be a three-word bullet point. It’s ok to offer context (I.e. leaves the leaves but not whole on your grass).

We have had fantastic luck with covering young tree trunks with hardware cloth. We overlapped the strips by about 6-10 inches to accommodate the tree growth. Secure with zip ties. We leave it up all year and it just visually disappears into the garden. Check to see if the hardware cloth needs expansion a couple of times during the growing season. Don’t want the metal cutting into the bark. Has done fantastic thwarting deer and rabbits. Note: one year I grew sweet pea flowers up the hardware cloth.

You sound like me this year, waiting for freeze to get things wrapped up. Z5a, WI. Love self watering pots as the plants always do better. OMG YES, Tree guards on thin barked trees are a must!! Lost a beautiful maple as it got a frost crack and then rotted. I’m training a sucker from that stump and it is super vigorous probably because it’s using old root and it’s fabulous. Definitely have to get a bigger trunk guard as it’s outgrown the other. It’s fun to mix flowers. By accident I planted a baby’s breath with petunias and it really made them pop. 😂😂leaf cleanup or in your hair-That’s me also. Husband always picking things out when I’m hard at work. The deer and rabbits eat everything here and I can’t plant outside of a barrier. And I didn’t plant anymore bulbs until I know the voles are gone. Never seen one ever and they ate a lot of bulbs last winter.

Thanks for reminding me to rabbit proof my garden. The rabbits got into my fenced garden last winter, due to the snow getting 2' high (my chicken wire is only 2' tall) They ate all the bark off my Hakuro willow, my panicle hydrangeas, and my pjm rhododendron. I was devastated 😭 my willow didn't make it, the hydrangeas are all lopsided and my rhododendron is now only half the size it was.
@dustyflats3832 Жыл бұрын
Sorry, it’s horribly devastating. I know as we are the salad bar for deer and rabbits. Everything else native here is oaks and cedars and we grow tastier stuff. I’m having difficulty coming up with a design for a front sitting area as it will need fencing. It’s bad enough because that is also where all the utilities are and trying to not make it look like a zoo. Yes, poultry wire needs to be at least 3’ where there is snow. It’s something I tend to forget also. It’s amazing how rabbits get into fenced areas as I watched one jump up between two overlapping fences because it wasn’t tight.
