I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. Been killing it with the vision 110 mat skeleton shad! Not much direct sunlight these days. A lot of bass and crappie with some snot rockets in there. Wish they didn’t exist around here, but is what it is.

Hey Matt, i fish a lot of southern Wisconsin waters that have a lot of perch. Do you ever use a perch colored jerkbait? I specifically fish Lake Geneva pretty often.

Sometimes, but I rarely find them to outperform other colors. Im not sure why.

sometimes whether it's jerkbaits or glidebaits especially on smaller lakes I will revisit spots with a different brand or color to give them a different look , occasionally it will help pick-up a kicker fish.

Could you discuss shallow jerkbaits vs like the plus one I throw the plus one all the time am I messing up Randy blauket throws the shallow mostly he says n I’m sure he is way better at it than me What’s your thoughts

hahah I throw the plus one more. But its more based on depth. I want m bait to get about half way to the bottom. if im in 8 ft or less i throw the standard jerkbait. if im in more than 8 ft i throw the deeper running models.

The jerkbait, out of all other techniques, without a doubt has been the most difficult technique for me to get the hang of. I have a tendency to over work my bait- especially when it's closer to me. And I get a lot of followers and fish that run up like they're going to hit it, but then they don't. Usually when I do catch one they run up, stop- and then on the next jerk- they smash it. But about 3/4ths of the time they run up, stop, I jerk it- and they swim off. So i tried leaving it sit still- they still swim off. I can't tell if it's color or if I'm not getting the action right but something causes the majority of them too stop an not hit it. They seem interested, they run up to it like they're gonna light it up- but they don't. It's like they've run up to ask a beautiful lady to dance and then realize, she has rotten teeth or something- they're gone.

Do you upgrade all the hooks... For example the crappy Megabass hooks... And if you do what type and size do you upgrade to... On the Megabass... I use the g finesse #6 but what about moving up a size to #4.. Or a different hook..

i like the berkley fusion 19 round bend trebles. I will go with bigger hooks only if im looking to get the bait deeper or have a bait thats floating more than suspending.

Nice job of condensing 30-40 jerkbait colors down to a realistic number. Jerkbait fishing is my favorite technique. Regardless of the species always amazing how fired up they get tracking down a jerkbait. Thanks for the vid.

Great video Matt. I too throw jerkbaits on spinning tackle. I use 8lb braid with a fluorocarbon leader. Is that a mistake ? Or should I be throwing it on straight fluorocarbon. I use a jerk bait on walleye smallmouth and largemouth

i think your limiting the depth your getting your jerkbait and potentially missing bites due to the braid. but if it works for you stick with it.

Great tutorial on jerkbait colors, I always love to learn anything I can about these baits. Im from Missouri and that Table Rock color is awesome, we use it here a bunch because it is so effective, I knew a gentleman that would custom paint that color on our crankbaits and they worked amazing. My favorite way to catch them , added another jerkbait setup so I will have three tied on this fall and winter, fish a private 550 acre lake here in Tennessee that has bluegill and perch as the forage , smoked em on the vision 110 in matte perch last winter , will also be fishing Chickamauga did well with the French pearl in the stained water

Matt, great video as always! I am looking forward to the rest of your videos on jerkbaits. I was fishing one yesterday during a kayak tournament. I don't have any that are suspending and translucent, but I still caught something.... a perch about 1/2 the size of my jerkbait! The little guy made me laugh. I definitely will be getting some more jerkbaits, but they are a little pricey!

Hey Matt, I think you should make a video talking about what kinds of jerkbait work depending on what season it is. For example, I hear suspending jerkbaits are best for the spawn and sinking jerkbaits work better for the fall.

Great advise, as always. Question for you. I typically fish the creek near my house as the fish use it to travel between the WI River and the lake. The last couple weeks, the big bass have been coming into the creek and chasing baitfish, every evening, bait jumping out of the water like crazy. But I can't get them to bite a single lure. I've tried top water, spinners, plastics, live bait, and still nothing (well, except Pike). The water is about 4-5 feet deep, clear, with about a foot of water above the weeds (with areas of dead lily pads). What would you suggest throwing in this type of situation to get the bass to bite?

the best thing about the vision 110's IMO are the color choices. Other than that there are lots of really good jerkbaits on the market and I cant say one is ALWAYS better than the other. I use probably six different brands and a lot of my choice is based on water color, species, and bait action that I want to fish. sounds like a good video to me!
