The whole thing is kind of sad to me, not because of the religious divide, but rather that the Byzantines were the last descendants of Rome. It would have been crazy if the Byzantines stayed in power and rose to the modern day. It just seems like something as interesting as the Roman Empire shouldn't have gone out like that. Sure, they would probably never go on to be a great superpower like they once were and would probably have become like Turkey at some point anyway, but it would have truly been interesting to see how the Roman Empire's culture developed for 2000 years uninterrupted like that.

Don't mourn for The Eastern Roman Empire finally dying, smile that they lasted that long. Takes a lot of luck to last from 330 AD to 1453 man, They outlasted the Western half, the Huns, The Avars, The Visigoths, the Parthians, the Sassanids, The Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates, Charlemagne's empire, even the Fatimid Sultanate. They had balls to last that long man. The Byzzies were truly badass, Romans at heart I say. Shame they will never get such recognition from the West though. At least Eastern Europe, the Turks and the Arabs respect them.

Except Pope didn't command the crusaders to attack Constantinople. Crusaders were going to Jerusalem and they wanted to go by sea so they went to Venice and Venetians promised to transport them but they wanted Money in return. Then an imprisoned Byzantine prince promised the crusaders Money Iff they let him be Emperor but then the emperor after that freed one said "N Money for you" so the crusaders sacked the city.

Cambridge University Press 1965. A museum in Istanbul has many exhibits of artifacts from the defenses of the city. A section of the massive chain used to block the Ottoman ships from the Golden Horn is on display. As the Ottomans brought their ships overland, when they neared the water they raised the sails and the oarmen rowed and the band played.

@Random Person Celebration? Yeah... be killed or enslaved, get your family and countryman killed or ensalved, expelled from their homeland, just so it can be recolonized by turks. It must had be such a celebration...
@felipegome15 жыл бұрын
@Random Person Pal, the people you claim that celebrated the turkish conquest of Constantinople was not the same people that lived there before it, but the new turkish colonist that assented there. The previous population of the city was enslaved and/or expelled. If you want to see the world and its history throught logic and reason, instead of being just one more jerk claiming to be racional on web, open a book and read what historians like Mario Curtis Giovani, Collins Wells or even LeGoff says about it. I said that the people living at the city by the time of the siege, i.e. the greeks, definitivally did not celebrate the conquest because their lives whas ruined by that, and you counter-argued that the new turkish colonists lived better there. You call this logic? I was talking about the population that actually was there and suffered with the siege, not the turkish settlers that arived afterwards. Besides that, Constantinople was not the same economic hub and trade node that it was with the greeks. The ottomans closed the spice route for the europeans (at that time, venetians and genoese), rising its price at the continent and leading the iberic powers to look for other routs throught Cape of Good Hope.

Constantinople first had fallen in 1204 on the 4th Crusade to Western Europeans led by greedy Venetian Dodge Enrico Dandolo.The sacking of the city which actually marked the begining of the collapse of Byztantium was far more ruthless and barbaric compared to Ottoman conquest in 1453. Also during Mehmed's campaign, although requested desperately by the Emperor several times, Papacy deliberately refused to help Byztantium since Orthodox Church was a rival to Catholic Church in Rome and they wanted it to be removed by Turks to put an end to dual leadership in Christianity.Turks just came to conquer to a city state which had already had its time in history and was betrayed by her most trusted allies.

Ottoman chroniclers say there were"river of steel" "as numerous as the star" however Michael the Serbian Janissary who was in preset at siege say : know therefore that Turkish emperor cannot assemble such a large army for pitched battle as people tell of his great might . For some relate that they are innumerable , but it is an impossible thing, that an army could be without number, for every ruler wants to know number of his army and to have it organised." another Italian Tetaldi merchant Florence and eyewitnesses in siege whose soberly calculated "at the siege there altogether two hundred thousand men, of who perhaps sixty thousand were soldiers, thirty or forty thousand of these begin Cavalry " .
@TheTariqibnziyad8 жыл бұрын
mansour alketbi but we have to take into account the size of the ottoman empire, and its logistics, a figure of more than 100 000 is not likely to be assembled, since we wont see such size only under Suleman the magnificiant, we can refer blindly to historical citation, we have to take into account logistics. imagine if Mohammed II brought 200 000 to the siege, that means that no other soldier is left in the empire, unless you tell me that he had more than 250000 in his military, something close to what the greatest empires had, the ottoman's limited resources, its impossible.
@mansouralketbi11238 жыл бұрын
Ibnziyad Tariq Maybe but you have to remember that siege continue 53 days and ottoman had heavy casualties and we don't the number yet . The Byzantine Empire was weakened over invasions/wars . so it couldn't have lasted that long anyway, it wasn't even at the hight of its power at the time so its not really that big a deal. Empires fall and go. just be happy that the empire existed for so long and how much it Contributed to science and culture, Philosophy etc.
@Pedrosa25417 жыл бұрын
Why? Ottomans were much better administrators than Byzantines who were a decadend empire full of intern division and religious bullshit (legend says that sholars in Constatinople were discussing what are the gender of angels, male or female, during the siege). The rise of the Otomman Empire brought properity for the region as they allied themselfs with the venezian merchants and bankers and kept the routes for commerce safe. They were also especially tolerant with the Greeks, Suleiman best friend was a orthodox greek for instance, actually so much so that in the 18th century Moreia Peninsula (today south Greece) deliberately revolted against Venezian rule just so they could kept themselfs under Ottoman rule.
@thestrangegoat45117 жыл бұрын
well its probably because people prefer to be ruled by there own rather then being under anyone. the Division was there because the were weakened by wars including Civil ones. Yes it was in a huge decline at the time and probably couldn't have lasted anyway. but it doesn't mean the people were happy specially sense nobody likes to get there city Plundered. Sure for a time they were and depending on the Leaders they could be pretty Tolerant. but you can't say that was always the case. specially in the 19th century and up where the Decline of the Ottomans was huge. The Ottomans by that time turned Corrupt started killing there subjects more and didn't even industrialize. So by that logic was the Fall of the Ottomans good to?

Your scenario is just crazy mumbo jumbo, but assuming it's true, what would happen is that christians would sack Constatinople in place of the Turks and make it a tributary state, because we are on the fucking 15th century and Byzantines are as foreign as turks or any other realm in the east, really.

The 4th Crusade was indeed a pile of shit. But the Ottomans are not blameless in ruining the city. Mehmed destroyed the Collumn of Justinian to make a cannon and demolished the Church of the Holy Apostles completely (the second most important and beautiful church in the entire city). His successors would also destroy what was left of the Hippodrome, cover up probably thousands of mosaics in plaster, resulting in most of them being destroyed and demolish most of the remaining buildings in the Great Palace complex (one of which was destroyed because they used it as a storage for weapons).

Fun Fact: Last Roman Emperor XI. Konstantinos's two nephews were heirs of the Roman Empire throne and they were young. Ottomans send them Enderun School (bureaucratic, managerial elite school recruiting Jannisaries) and took care specially. One of them became a muslim and even later become Grand Vizier (Messiah Pasha) and even entered the Ottoman Dynasty as son-of-law. His brother (Has Murad Pasha) stayed Christian but he was also a Pasha and served the Ottomans. Yeah, this is a true summary of Ottoman style, when your age is 10 and waiting for the Roman Empire throne, years later Ottomans defeats your Empire but then you can find yourself when you serve the Ottomans with a turban on your head.

And it is told that he was very nice to the people, he wanted city's enlighted people to stay. He let them live their religion as they wanted, keep their property etc. But it is true that, before Sultan entered the city more than 30.000 people were enslaved, "suspicious" people were slaughtered. Every race on Earth has conquered other people, whites were the first to get really good at it and I'd wager that we as a group were relatively quick to actually feel bad about it and feel like we owed something to the people we conquered. The reason nonwhites didn't invade and conquer 95% of the world was because they had shitty "civilizations" (Japan, China, parts of India excepted, all of the Americas and Africa had relatively shitty civilizations), not because they had some ethical reason not to invade others.

Epirus (iirc) had a similar situation like Trebizond as well, until it fell in 1479

the help of the 3 ships were not send by the genoese of Galata but was hired by the emperor konstanine to bring suplies to the City and was also another 4th ship a byzantine from Crete with captain Flantanelas, they fight their way in the city when the wind was stoped and were surunded by the ottoman ships but they held firm fighting for hours just few houndred meters from the harbor gates! ottoman admiral Baltoglu attacked Flantanelas ship and after large scale fighting, the turks used the ottoman flagships as steping stown and they were bring more soldiers from the other ships, but eventually the byzantine ship were victorius, Baltoglu injured and the wind started to blow again and bring the ships to the safety of the city. another heroic event were the greek volunteers from Crete that were manned 3 towers on the sea-walls. after the city collapsed they were traped inside, they refused to surrender brefering death from capture, after long hours of fighting the turks eager to plunder, finaly the Sultan give his word to leave the cretans with their weapons and flags and board their 2 ships and returned home, they were the first to bring the news of the holy City fall!

"Left the door open". Well, the city actually fell because of the tremendous fire power coming from the biggest canons ever built in that time, destroying the city walls.

I don't think so. The rubble actually served as a better barrier against the cannons as they absorbed them better. From what I read there was fighting outside of the city wall and they failed to shut it in time and ottoman forces entered by force. But I could be wrong, it's hard to tell nowadays.

+AugustanFinn Why are you salty about something that happened over 500 years ago, and that you were never a part of, and that Europeans actually helped to cause? Why the fuck are you even viewing history as right/wrong? It only goes to show you're an idiot sensationalist.
