Fall Sewing: Creating a Fall Capsule for Jenni

I practice sustainable sewing. My daughter introduced me to a non-profit in our area whose mission is to keep fabric and art/craft supplies out of landfills. Last Saturday, my daughter and I went to their Fall fabric sale - $8.00 for as much fabric as you can fit into a paper grocery bag. I found some wonderful rayons and knits. When I got home, I planned my sewing project for each piece of fabric I purchased. I expect to get at least 13 articles of clothing, and they will average out to $1.39 per garment!!! For a retiree on a fixed income, this is a dream come true.

I really enjoyed this type of video. its great to see the colour chart being put into action using not only the right colours but also flattering styles for a different body shape etc. Jenni also has my colours so Im particularly interested in the 30 piece "reveal" and the new makes using the fabrics shown. I recently got my colours done and I am Calm Summer. For 30 years I have been an Autumn, but I think through colour changes with age, by complexion has changed. Brown and orange were my favourite colours and now I'm told I shouldn't wear them. It's going to be a real change to my thinking trying to identify colours that suit me now.

I just watched the thrift flip the other day. Jenni looks amazing in her colors! I have been wearing my colors (2 iterations) for 30 years and it makes a huge difference for me. I haven’t worn grey, black or white in all those years.

You and Jenni are so cute together! I’ll bet you just have a blast! I personally haven’t had much luck at thrifting in my area but I know there are great finds out there. I recently purchased mens XL high end shirts and have used them for bias tape, muslins and have plans to make a Cadence out of a Madras plaid one I thrifted. Jenni, your fall wardrobe is going to be perfect!

First let me say I think of you, and your mum everyday🙏. I hope things are going well. I was a pretty accomplished sewer 30 years ago. I made a couple of friends’ wedding dresses and have done tailoring etc. after a 30 year break I want to get back into it. I have bought a new sewing machine (Janome) and a Singer serger, but now I need to figure out how to use them snd what threads to get etc etc. how do you tell what colour of serger thread to buy, so it does not show? Do you pick a few basic colours? I am an Autumn so should I could I buy some rust/ red that I could use and maybe some camel/gold/brown. I can colour match the regular 🧵 it is more the serger stuff I am also paralyzed over how to print patterns. I must own about 25 patterns, that sit on my computer. Love your UTube and I can always go back and find older episodes to keep me entertained. Keep it up, but stay safe and healthy💕

I"m so glad you're getting back into sewing! With serger threads, I just have a few neutral colors (white, black, brown, gray and navy). When I'm working with something of a different color, I use that color in the far left needle so if the seam has stress on it, the matching color is what shows. I just use regular machine thread for this one. This saves a ton of money in thread since you are usually needing 3-4 spools when you're serging. Also, take a look at Wawak.com for really reasonably priced thread! Jenni, your sweater is gorgeous! That Malabrigo yarn is lovely and so easy to work with - feels very nice, too :) I think my colors are the same as yours, though in the stone age I was thought to be a winter. In fact, I have on a blue t-shirt that I altered from a men's XXL (thank you Whitney for the tutorial on this!) that is the same color as your top! Hi! Great video! I had my colors done with Color Guru, and I’m a moonlit summer also! I thought I was either a spring or autumn, I have strawberry blond hair. I’ve had trouble finding clothes with too much orange/browns and other warm colors for fall. I finally figured out that if those colors are below my waist, or if on top has 30% or less warm colors, I feel like it’s ok, I can live with it ok like you’ve said. I love your thrifted clothing finds!

Jane, it's shopping at gently used product businesses, in this case clothing.

For consignment individuals sell their items and split the profit with the store versus thrift stores where items are donated and the store is run for charity.

Understand, we don't have those In the UK. We do have preloved shops, but generally they only stock designer items that are under 2 years old and the shop owner takes the sale monies and pays you a share, normally no more than 30% as they run it as a business. At least, the few shops that I know of, where I live in SE England, run this way. Sounds like your consignment outlets would be a better option here.

Jane, our consignment shops sound VERY similar to the ones you just described. However, we do find shops that carry brands that aren't designer. Its a great way to reuse gently used clothing!

I was completely shocked when I got my colors done, but I am so glad I gave it a try because it has made a huge difference. That being said, you might be one of those people that rides the line between two different color categories. I would reach out to whoever did your colors and ask about it. They would be either able to explain their decision or even show you the other family that you fall close to!

This was her choice. Her color card has 35 different colors on it, but she narrowed it down to just a few for her Fall wardrobe.
