In this video I travel from my campsite on Carroll Lake to the Haggart River! I will show the 8 portages I tackled on my way to my next campsite. At the end of the video I include some GPS coordinates and portage information.
Enjoy and thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! I don’t think I will get back there this year, but want to plan a 7-10 day trip next year.

A day off from work today and I was excited to see your video posted. Really great trip, what a beautiful rugged area! How many trips across each portage do you do? And curious when planning a route how many Km per day one should plan as to not feel the pressure to stay on track for time.

Thanks for watching! It was definitely a beautiful paddle. I double carry portages (3 Trips). There are a lot of variables that go into km per day and very subjective: environmental (weather, upstream/downstream, volume of water, winding river, lake etc..) and personal factors (skill level, canoe weight/trim, energy level, etc) The average speed is 4-5km/hour and good rule of thumb for intermediate paddler, this is generally where I try to stay at. For me personally, 15km a day is a “take your time” day and +20km is a “keep on schedule” day this assuming portages. Without portages 25-30km. But again depends on the conditions. This section I was right around 5km/he as weather and water level was great. However, from obukowin to Carroll Lake campsite I was averaging around 3-3.5 because of the headwinds, rest stop, checking map etc…distance was about 22km. Portages are tougher to estimate unless you know the area, factor in deadfall/clearing, not finding it, unloading and loading canoe (more small portages take longer than long ones), # trips, energy level etc…doing some quick math in this section I was probably 35 minutes on average, a decent amount of getting my bearings straight, finding portages, clearing deadfall, eating, falling in the water! etc… On future trips into new areas I will probably estimate based on 3-4km/hour to build in a buffer and then gauge in real time if I want to push forward. Hope that helps!

Been through there twice now. Crazy how low the water is! Didn’t even recognize the area. No water all year will do that! Made it tougher for you for sure! That area was the 2016 fire started just east of Beresford lake in Manitoba. Work on your ‘J’ stroke, will save you a ton of energy and get ya going faster too! 🏕✌️

I can imagine it’s a totally different trip in high water! Yeah when I get tired the J stroke goes away, also not enough paddle time last year to create some healthy habits! Got a kayak paddle as a gift this year, going to try that out.

Also, where I camped on Carroll on the small island it wasn’t marked on your map. Not the greatest shape but with a little TLC it would be a nice site. Also, not sure how the portage lengths were like when you went on this route, I am guessing that many of them are longer than what I measured on my GPS when the water is higher?

@@ManitobanOutdoors You definitely endured the longer ‘portages’ with this low water. DM me a screenshot of the campsite location on Instagram please. I’ll make the correction. Thx!!
