In this video I paddle from Wallace Lake to Obukowin Lake, where I tackle the 5km of the Obukowin Portages called the "three mothers". Oh what a day it was!
It was my first time in this area and will absolutely be returning to the area some time soon!
I include some map images and coordinates at the end to help if you are interested in this particular route.
Enjoy the video!!

Wow what a warrior!! I have never been north of Flintstone in Nopiming. Atikaki seems even more remote & wonderfully peaceful. Beautiful seeing God’s more remote creation.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, Atikaki is a lot more remote, such a nice place! Woodland Caribou in Ontario is also amazing.

I’m impressed that you made it through all 3 portages in one day. Hard core!

Sorry for the delay! I surprised myself too, there were a couple times I almost stopped to camp. Maybe I should have!

Thanks for posting brings back some good memories from my solo trip in june 2021 to aikens and beyond. Nice to see the trails used. Water levels seemed only a little lower than when i was there. They say do the 3 mothers when its been dry. So last year being so wet i went with a friend the other way, west down the wanipigow and up the broadleaf and down the gammon and back. Very beautiful area, very few people visit it seems.

Sorry for the late reply! Thanks for commenting. I could imagine the three mothers being a real grind when wet, probably would be tough to do it in a day. I want to go the way you went one year, seems like it would be a nice paddle.

Nice to see these portages being used and slightly developed since Martin was through them many years ago now! Good job getting through them!

Thanks! I am glad they were dry and navigable, I definitely wouldn’t have made obukowin otherwise!

Awesome trip, I was so excited to see this one come out :) what a slog though, looked super tough to get thru. Great job on filming the route and with the gps coordinates, thats super handy. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this trip! I doubt many go into this area due to the distance to wallace and the portage lengths. The challenge is rewarding though im sure. I got the canoe trip itch….. im debating this trip or Garner into woodland caribou park. Thanks for putting all the effort into the video it was well done!

Thanks for watching! It was a work out for sure but a lot of it was self imposed as I was trying to keep on schedule. If I do it again I will leave right at sunrise from Wallace and consider camping at portage 2. If it’s wet and boggy it will be slow going! I am looking into garner to woodland as well…. Thanks for watching!

Did this trip back in about 88. I'd been before but this trip was different. My buddy and I were both floored on Portage 2...floating swamp bed. Each step was like walking on a deep-sinking sponge. It was a single carry, with the two of us, but it was like doing squats for each step. I ended up lying on the bog for a while, eating salted umbushe plums to help ease my killer leg cramps! Good times!!

The floating bog wasn’t too bad for me, I can imagine if it’s really wet it would be a grind. I am almost scared to go back as I think I was spoiled with the dry conditions! Was the stoneman there in 88 or before, curious how long it’s been there.

@@ManitobanOutdoors No Stoneman (Inukshuk) back then. Yes, I did this trip 3 times in my youth but that one time was high water and the ground and trees moved with each step on the swamp bed and surrounding woods. We were disheartened when we were about 5 steps in, looking at the magnitude of walking through it. In spots we could pull the canoe through some of the stream but the walking was brutal : D One of by buddies lost a boot in the bog on another trip. Another group of young people, with some scout or Outward bound leaders, paddled by us while we were on our teardrop island on Obukowin. One of the 18 year olds had a bushcrafted splint as he broke his ankle in the same spot! It's not just a fun romp! Still, those memories are great, now!!

@@ManitobanOutdoors Great job on your videos. I'm looking forward to heading off from Tulabi into Elbow area again this summer, another one of your videos. The portages had no steps when I use to paddle there years ago. The steep climb through mud one time was nearly impossible. I believe that was the first portage? Uncertain though. We had to use ropes to pull ourselves up. Shorter distance but still tough haul. And we had a bear at the top going through someone's trash that we had to convince to let us by. He wasn't interested in us at all but didn't want to give up on his loot! LOL!

I am sure you had “why am I doing this?”Thoughts a few times! I did on the second last day, came back through the wanipigow on the east side of siderock…low water and had to walk and drag the canoe 2km in muck. That for sharing!
