Falling BIG on Psycho-Metric (5.11a) - Pilot Mountain

Psyco-metric is a 5.11a located in the Black Rain Wall section at Pilot Mountain. The noticeably steep start makes this route pretty pumpy right from the ground. The crux is pulling out of the low roof and climbing past the first draw, so stick-clipping is recommended.
After maneuvering through some technical rock, a second crux comes as you climb over and past a bulge but shortly after that there's a good no-hands rest. The rest of the climb is pretty easy in comparison.

It was pretty scary but fortunately the fall went just about as great as it could have. Landed nice and soft thanks to a great belayer!

It was a big fall, but a clean one and I didn’t swing back and hit the wall too hard.

It looks as if there were a number of ledges where you could have taken a hands-free rest before the second crux, but perhaps the camera angle was misleading, and you simply had to go in one huge push. Either way, nice video with good climbing and excellent narration!

Thanks for the kind comments! Funny how you just came across this as I literally just sent this route just the other week! Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera with me but it felt much easier and way smoother then in this video! There are two no-hands rests, one just after the first crux and one just after the second. While you can make this route much easier by trending right and resting in easier terrain I’m sure that drops the overall grade by a letter or two. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

I see that you've got a lead tag from TRC, which gym do you normally climb at? I climb at the one in Fayetteville but once a month a group of my friends and I go to the one in Morrisville to practice our lead climbing on the 55ft walls. We are going outdoor for the first time in mid October, unfortunately I was the one that drew the short straw and is now planning everything so I decided that we should go to pilot for our first time since its close and has a bunch of sport routes. I was also wondering what grades you normally climb,? My best for indoor is V5/6 boulder, 5-12+ top rope and 5.12- lead. Nice video man keep up the good work!

Hey thanks! I climb at the three gyms in the area all pretty frequently. We should totally meet up at Morrisville sometime! I boulder V5/6 in the gyms and lead up to 5.12’s as well. Pilot is great for a first time because everything is well laid out and easy to get to. Let me know if you want any specific tips or route recommendations! I’ve climbed most of the routes there!
