Enjoyed the review very much...thanks for taking the time. I have a becker bk11 and a coldsteel pocket bushman that I use for smaller tasks. For bigger I like the kabar 7" utility and for heavy jobs the Ontario SP10 Marine Raider. Love watching your all's vids and learning from you. :)

I love these knives. The F1 is in my top 5 list. The rubberised handle also helps in the first cut that you did with it resting against your knee and also works as a shock obsorber when battoning. Good review guys. 5*

Hi, its great to get back on line. A very good review. It dates back a while and since this was first aired, there’s been many more knifes and custom knife makers enter the field. That said, it would seem this knife is very good and has many loyal users. Its great to read about six years use and still going. I would be hoping to get many more years than that, if possible. I have one question, the F1 looks brilliant, but I am also interested to find out if any one has used the Northern Lights, NL5L Idum. This knife also appeals to me.

@NaturalBushcraft Takefu doesn't export and of their VG or SG series steels; something to do with Japanese governmental regulations. Any blade that is made of VG-10 has to be produced in Japan.

Out of my arsenal of knives I have two "go to" blades. The first being my F1 and the second being a handmade knife in 01 tool steel carbon. I almost always take the carbon blade with me. The F1's convex bevel is lacking compared to a scandi grind and I'll take carbon steel over stainless any day for many different reasons but mostly for it's ability to strike a spark off of flint and other rocks.

@poseidon2267, what are you going to use it for. For general purpose I'd recommend the F1 (more control, and versatility) but if you need the extra length go for the A1 (easier to baton, better for chopping).

@NaturalBushcraft All the Fällkniven knives are made in Japan after a spat with Linder Cutlery in Germany (who initially manufactured the F1) though after they ripped of the design and sold their own (allegedly w. even the same lettering on the boxes) the cooperation was cut off and they went with the next best company who could make the powder steel to specifications.

Good review! I have been using my F1 for about 6 years now for winter and summer trips in the bush, and I am very happy with it. For feather sticks it takes some practice to develop the muscle memory to control the convex edge, but once you get it, you can make multiple curl feathers like Mors says are the best curls. Its a beast for battoning, no worries. This knife can baton cross grain through wood with ease, just as you showed. It is a true survival knife. I did work it on water stones to make a micro bevel, for ease of touching up in the field with a stone. The micro bevel also works well for stropping. I find that regular stropping with compound, or very fine wet-dry sandpaper followed by compound on leather, finished on a leather belt, keeps the edge very sharp, and its rare that I actually need to "sharpen" the edge. Its light enough to carry with pleasure.

whats convex edge?
@Trailtraveller

The conclusions are correct. Only the convex grind is bit more difficult to sharpen. Feathersticks are indeed slightly more difficult to make with this knife. But overall I would give this knive an 9 out of 10.

Is it worth to buy F1 in 3G steel instead of the VG10 laminated steel? Have you had a opportunity to compare these two steels made by Fallkniven?

@scargill8 You dont have to clean it every time you put it in your sheath, just at the end of the day when you put it away at home. If your out in the woods for multiple days its not a bad idea just to wash it off. You dont need to do an fancy cleaning, but if you have a 100 dollar knife you want it to last.

Hi! I prepare to buy really good survival knife and i want to ask you about this F1 and Ontario TAK-1. How long F1 is still sharp and its hard to sharpen it? What about size, does it make any problems in harder tasks like bigger wood or something? It is good to make food? what knife should i take TAK-1 or F1? maybe u can make review of Ontario TAK? BTW i love ur videos-they are maked profesionally!

I wish they made a flat or scandi grind version, too. Being 'fatter', a convex edge is better at splitting, but not as good for slicing.

Nice review .. but I wish it had been the standard knife in swedish army .. we "only" get Mora knifes (not bad but not as good either). It's said to be used in the airforce, and that I can't say anything about. But the pricetag is way to high per knife for the Swedish army to use it as standard knife.

Absolutely .. I would be glad if I had a Mora knife in the woods. I take that any day in front of knifes twice or even five times the cost. Mora sells quality in quantity .. other brands try to market themselves as quality by price .. which is like saying "I'm swedish .. therefore I can play tennis " =)

I enjoy the wilderness, I also induce survival situation, God forbid a real emergency survival situation, my practice would come in handy, I think Fallkniven knives rock, althoughy preference is the A-1 as my survival knife,although I enjoy other makers, Busse, Bark River, etc. F-1 makes a good size for bushcrafting, in survival I find a bit larger blade size, is the way to go for me.

@flatout1001 You don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about. VG-10 is produced by Takefu Special Steel Co. of Echizen City, Japan, and due to Japanese export laws, any blade made of VG-10 must be produced in Japan. And no, there is no folding whatsoever with the f-1. 2 pieces of softer stainless (probably 420 series or SUS) are merely welded/laminated to a piece of VG-10. Stop spreading misinformation.
