I've had that unit for years and I love it! Never had problems and used it in my cabinet shop and it works great. Yes you can get off brand filters, but not the bag inside. It's made to be used in CONJUNCTION with a dust collection system, no in place of it.

Yes definitely in conjunction with dust collection at the source. These are great when your shop is attached to your home, in your basement etc. to get what the saw/sander/dust collector misses. The relatively coarse “dust” you noted in the after test would easily be separated by a shop vac when it is generated. This polishes off the fine particles. Your repair was excellent. Another simple way to identify run-out is to hold a marker by the cage as it rotates and slowly move it toward the rim till it just touches. This will mark the high spots to help you make sure your bending at the proper location.

I’ve had one of these for over 15 years. Yes, the squirrel cage vibrates some, but hasn’t caused any problem. Also, hang it lower, from chains. It’ll pick up more dust and be easier to clean. I used the same chains you have and it’s been hanging there for fifteen + years without any problem. Do hook the chains to some eye bolts in the holes you drilled in the joists, and bend the s hooks closed.

I enjoy all you do. I do HVAC. See if you can get a new blower wheel anyway. Next, get all thread rods and lower your unit back down closer to your dust makers. Next, see if the pre-filter size you have is ease to get where you live. If not, what size filter do they normally stock that is larger and get someone that can make sheet metal ducts to make you a transition from unit opening to also hold your new filter size. The closer your unit is to your dust makers, the more it will catch. Bigger pre-filter will not hurt that unit at all. Bigger filters surface will never hurt any HVAC system.

As someone already mentioned, lowering the unit closer towards the dust will make it more efficient. HOWEVER, if you like it bolted to the beam, using vibration isolators is a simple fix for the vibration issue.

It is very annoying when you spend hard earned money and end up having to put it right. I had the same problem with a bandsaw I bought with the blade guides. Like you thought It would be quicker to fix it myself as chances are a replacement parts/machine could still have the same problem. So congratulations on fixing the problem, it runs spot on now. I have same sort of machine although different brand and like your machine I don't think it collects all the dust in the workshop, but anything that does collect a good amount is a bonus and better than going into your lungs!. Enjoy your machine its a big asset to your shop.

I hate to be the one to give you the bad news but you can make one of those for almost nothing. Talk to an HVAC guy and get a blower unit out of a used furnace. They are a similar type blower or better than what is used in that unit. (a direct drive blower not the old belt and pulley ones) make a plywood box and put on a switch and cord. Buy a filter rack from your local HVAC supplier for less than 20 dollars with a filter and screw it to the box. Done. I have used those blowers for years while doing renovating and put them in a window to suck out the dust. If you want to get fancy you can put on a multi switch and have two speeds or on the really new units you can have variable speeds. You can get the blowers for free and spend 60 bucks to build a unit that is rock solid!

Not only that but if you really want to get fancy just buy an air handler with a DC drive motor and add one of the pleated air bear type filters with a 3M filtrete as a pre filter. You can then have s variable speed blower that had all the controls needed already in it and uses commonly available filters. Bonus is you can add ductwork to pull air from multiple places and exhaust wherever you want it.

@@falllineridge Also, Jay's is a box that sets on the floor, so it's not blowing air around at ceiling height and causing a circular flow from top to bottom of the room, which I believe will tend to keep the dust down low without moving it around as much.

Having been in the HVAC business, I got a sheet metal shop make me a piece of 20x20 duct with 1 end cap. I had some used furnace blowers laying around and mounted one inside with a switch so I could tap each of the 4 speeds by turning the knob. I installed 4 'L' strips inside and placed a pleated air filter (readily available). I didn't hang mine. I just put it on a shelf out of the way so I could reach the switch knob. Plugged in it and it ran great. I bought a box of filters from the wholesaler for cheap and now have a low cost unit for around $35.00. Why buy a metal box from S Korea?

My fan doesn't spin as free as yours so I think the fan or motor is packed with dust. I've noticed their quality has gone down, I have a Jet mortiser and that broke a weld on the back, bad castings. If I can't fix it, I'll buy a Delta, Wen or Ridgid filtration unit for my shop.

We all hate to be negative about things but its also important to be honest. I have gotten things that was complete garbage out of the box so it happens. The important thing is to be honest about the product. Yoir honesty may prevent someone else from falling for scam products or simply really bad ones. It can also steer people to products that do what they are suppose to do or uet better than they are suppose to. One of the best things i really love about your channel has been the honesty. I wish that I would have seen this and/or found your channel months ago. I have the exact same unit. I found that mine filtered the air more efficiently when it wasn't right up against the ceiling. I used a long eye bolt and a heavy duty "quick link" at each corner so that it hangs approx. 5-6" away from the ceiling. Using a fan to keep the particles moving around and not settling helps as well. God Bless.

To be fair I noticed the fan wobble when you first fired it up. Then when you solid mounted the whole thing solid to the building I fully expected vibration unless some rubber mount to deaden movement. The other expectation for the machine to work efficiently was negated by operating the sander without the designed dust collection bag is not a fair test.

Right, I was thinking he should have the shop vac hooked up to the sander and running it through a premium filter in the shop vac. If dust is not going into the air then the Jet system could filter properly. Curious if anyone can tell me what sarcasm is?The Jet filters would last longer with the bag on the sander but I don't think he was testing how long it takes for the filter to need changed. Rubber bushings would allow movement and cut down on stress and metal fatigue along with noise transfer.

@@brucewelty7684 This machine isn't designed to clean dust at source, its designed to filter the air. A dust collector\shop vac at source is meant to clean the dust he was showing on the surface of his box. The filter cleans the air and the tiny particles that you can't see, that are harmful to humans. So it was an unfair test with unrealistic expectations on the tool. However, the quality issues highlighted were poor.

Call customer service and send them the first three minutes of your video. That fan wobble is NOT acceptable. It was caused by being dropped in shipping, ergo the dent. It will cause undue wear on the shaft and shorten the life of the unit. Another FYI, When taking anything out of a tight packaging, 1. Fully open flaps 2. Hold flaps back as you roll package over on to the open side. 3. Lift packaging off the item, leaving it on the floor/bench. 4. Remove Styrofoam packaging and put aside. That way if you have to ship it back, all of the packaging is still in tact and you simply reverse the previous steps.

I have Grizzly 15" Planer, 19" Band Saw, 24" dual drum Sander, drill press, and moulder. Have had them all for many years and been very happy with them all. I've found their quality to be equal to or greater than Jet or any of the others. Delta was high quality 20 years ago but is now pretty much junk since they got bought. Since I've had all my grizzly equipment for a decade or more, perhaps their quality has dropped.

read the documentation. it has a height requirement for it to be lower than you had it.

I just have to ask, my husband and I are constantly watching your videos and we highly admire the time you take to set up your cameras for all these different shots. If you don't mind, help me settle a disagreement we're having. Lol. Do you have 2-3 cameras set up all around you that you move to different spots, or do you use a drone that you just move around with you wherever you go along with another camera? Thanks in advance, and keep up the awesome work on your channel! *edit* I am mostly referring to the shots where you're driving in the woods on your tractor.

Hey Corie, I really appreciate the kind words. It really depends on the type of video and the shots that I want. If I'm in the woods on the tractor I might take a regular camera and a drone and do just what you said. Other times I'll take a regular camera and a GoPro and move them around. 90% of the time I just use one single camera and move it around a bunch. The fewer cameras the better! Hope this helps! And thank you for watching.

Looks to me like it was DROPPED in shipping which would do that, or it was damaged and returned and shipped to you
@falllineridge
@falllineridge 5 жыл бұрын
That's possible. It has a dent on one of the top edges. But, better internal packaging would go a long way in preventing even drop damage.
@HobbyOrganist
@HobbyOrganist 5 жыл бұрын
@@falllineridge The problem is even with more packing is the weight of the wheel and motor being suspended as it is by the 4 brackets, you drop that box off the loading dock onto the floor and no matter how much padding there is to protect the cabinet, the motor's weight is going to act like a missile. I know a lot about packing and shipping because I ship very fragile and very heavy sculptures out almost every week as I have the last 20 years. Cardboard boxes do not work for what I ship, so I normally ship in wood crates and never have damage. When I shipped in boxes, even double boxed I had breakage from the weight of the items acting like a missle and breaking thru the cardboard. Keep in mind, the goons at UPS etc dont give a damn, and in fact afriend told me a friend of his when he was in college worked loading trucks on the UPS docks, he said when they got bored they'd have "contests" to see who could make any box marked "FRAGILE HANDLE WITH CARE" on them "rattle" first by slamming it against the wall, floor, etc. That's why I NEVER put labels like that on any shipment- it invites that kind of thing. If it was me I would have had Amazon REPLACE the unit under their satisfaction guarantee, you paid good money for it it's not your fault it was damaged.

this is a common thing with JET machines, I have 6 in total and all of them are great and designed well. unfortunately they are assembled like crap. so a little tinkering is always in order with JET...

I would never go for this device after seeing it. You could easily cobble something up with plywood, Home Depot furnace filter and a cheap fan. I estimate construction costs at well under a $100. Where it's mounted doesn't matter as long as the intake and exhaust are not up against a wall.

Two 20" box fans mount in your rafters with 20" x 20" filters would filter twice the amount air in your shop for under a $50.00 bill. Sorry you had such bad luck with what you got, research might have told you this. Sorry so blunt.

Hey, you know, at least JET sells these for $29.99 !! I mean, if this thing cost a bit of change, all that DIY and low quality control would be unacceptable. ..... Wait, it costs more than 30 bucks? More than 10 times that!!???? China should be ashamed. Don't they have any national pride??

I would also use these filters as your pre filters as they are a little higher quality than that simple fiberglass jet filter and will prolong the life of the internal filter. They all fail in comparison to making your own using a 3/4 or 1hp furnace blower compared to the 1/6 ot 1/8 hp blowers that come in these units for 5x the price. Also, whatever drop caused the dent, also bent the think gauge metal used in the fan - hence the excessive wobble

@sandan500

I own two of these units in my shop and neither had a damaged squirrel cage so you could have just called Jet to replace. Your test is bogus IMHO because you do not have any accurate method for air quality. All woodshops should have a quality air monitor like Dylos or equivalent otherwise you are just guessing at what you are breathing.
