There is a set screw on the back side of the pulley and it is loose and not holding the “key” (what you called the sheer pin). It will come out if you don’t tighten it up!

I've got the same plucker. Birds come out super clean after just a few seconds in the plucker. Not a cheap item, but a worthwhile investment.

Back in the day our hogs had free range corn. I remember Dad bringing home the truck fully loaded with bags of corn and dumping it all in the big feeder. I never knew the numbers but sold most to the meat locker to pay for what we kept. A free range feeder would be more work in the beginning but zero work again until it needs a refill also. Seeing your son grow through your videos is such a gift! Thank you so much for sharing that! He not only brought a smile to my face but made me laugh in this one!

When I first immigrated to this wonderful country from Zimbabwe, I had to learn the different words that are used by Americans born and bred to describe "things" !! For example gasoline is what we called petrol, car hoods we're called bonnets, the trunk was called the boot and many other differences. So, for me, it was easy to understand your dilemma. Hand plucking? My Mom bought a plucker back in the 70's (ironically it was my future father in law that sold it to my parents) I never had the stomach for butchering & I applaud you for having the stones to do it. Well done 👏👏👏👏👏👏

To be honest, I don't think I could butcher my own livestock !! That's why they have processors to do that - for which they obviously charge a fee !! I have no idea what that charge would be........$???

@@johnking8679 it varies based on how much the pig weighs, whether the processor is USDA inspected, and what cuts you want. A 250# pig will cost around $210 to have processed around here at a non USDA plant. I have to dispatch and deliver the pig. They handle gutting and everything else. If I do it myself it takes me 2 days, I have to have a cooler to let it hang, and I get the enjoyment of processing my own food. I do a little of both.

In the past I’ve collected apples that have fallen off the trees at an orchard for a pig, Mabey you could find an orchard owner who wouldn’t mind if you pick up some of the old apples on the ground

We were homesteaders back in the 80's and worked with some folks at the university of Arkansas. Keep the hogs separated but together by using a simple A-frame, this keeps companionship but fighting at bay this way you get more growth for each pig. Also a variety of foods from the garden kept them happy and eating all the time, even green corn stalks left over but not too much, everything in moderation :). I enjoy watching your channel. We are trying to get it so we can move to the property and raise feeder chickens. I told my son-in-law I would take care of everything up to the time to butcher and pluck. That part i can't handle. You should check out Keeping it Dutch. He raises pigs for meat. He has a big feeder that holds I think 50 lbs of feed at a time.

Hog weight made easy is girth x 10 - 200. So 45 inches x 10 is 450 -200 =250. usually gets you w/in 5 lbs if tape is pulled snugly.

I've two hogs that are about 300 lb each and can't get a butcher date until Jan 2023. I've hot-wired about an acre of woods and field, to supplement the feed, I also have an acre of corn I planted just to finish them off 45 days out from butcher date. I'll feed them stalks and all.

Hey you can use the chicken plucker for double duty. Lube up the fingers with soap/water and drop the youngun in there for Sunday bath. :) With the cost of feed now days, you're going backwards on the cost of any meat bird/animal that you raise. Please do a cost analysis vs meat production cost.

Grandpa would hang the chickens in the walnut tree. He'd use bailer twine and hang them by the feet, then he'd use one of his knives and chop their heads off. After that he'd let them bleed out for usually 15-20 mins. Then we'd dunk them in a bucket of hot water and let them soak for few mins then we'd pluck them by hand. Didn't ever mind it to much. Only part I couldn't stand was when grandma would burn the pin feathers off over the kitchen stove, talk about a stink. Singe the hair on your arm and that's what'd smell like.

usually about 3-4 months befor we kill hogs we will put them in a small pen Smaller the better & just start feeding them all they will eat until we start the freezer camp process But we are from the older generation and we dont kill 250-300 lb pigs though ! ya dont have a ham or midllans/side and no fat to make lard either on the small ones..but it does cost a fuw bucks to get them their but its sooo good..lol. Same way we do beef to btw but the beef is skined & hogs are not ..

Our meat chicks are supposed to be in next week. We got a plucker last year and we're completely happy with it. You can pluck 2 chickens in about 30 seconds. We got our pigs about 6 weeks after you. Our barrow is around 260 now and the female is 230ish bit she won't let me measure her. They are mostly Duroc with some Hampshire thrown in. Like you I am tired of feeding them.

This is exactly why you need to give the a couple of acres of overgrown to clean up .... natural foliage / roots will pack on weight free of charge. Also, find some hunting buddies who have some corn left over from hunting they didn’t use, soak it then feed to the pigs. Lastly, go talk to the produce manager at local grocery store and get whatever fruits n veggies he throws out and feed to the pigs. Offer him some fresh sausage or something. You gotta think outside the box man....

Pigs are omnivores, so any food past its "sell by" is good, along with all kitchen and garden scraps. They'll turn it all into high-grade fertiliser and clear the ground and plough it in for you - if you keep them in the place you're going to grow a crop next year or the one after. Best not to leave fallow though, unless you want Oklahoma's finest crop of weeds. You can use everything except the oink!

That grocery store refusal is great in several ways. Around here we have "old" bread stores where you can get LARGE bags of expired or almost expired bread at an extremely low price that we use to feed our chickens. I'm sure that would work great for hogs as well. 👌

I haven’t bought grain from a feed store in years, so my idea may be way off. How ever the next time you raise hogs, supplement their protein diet with deer corn, oats, cotton seed mill. Stuff like that. That’s what I did back in high school FFA. Best chops, ribs, and sausage I’ve ever eat!

We have about double the space for our 2 pigs. They eat everything available in their paddock in a couple of weeks. By the time they are 200# or so they mostly just lie around in the mud. We grow a big melon patch and feed most of them to the pigs. I want my pigs to get some exercise and eat stuff other than pig feed.

Assuming they are both male, have they been castrated? Meat from uncastrated male pigs tastes and smells awful. Last time I inadvertently ate some .... it made me sick as a pup. Get them castrated well in advance of slaughter and butchering. How to get more into them for more weight? Is there a porcine version of Insure? 😄
