I forget the amendment to the Constitution that actually limits our president to two terms, it's actually more recent than you would think, but it's been a sort of tradition throughout American history because our first president (G. Wash.) only served two. For the most part, every president before the amendment was made didn't want to serve three or more terms because it would seem as though they were saying they could do better than good old George. (And alluding to the fact you might be better than G. Wash. isn't exactly something you want to do if you want to be elected!)
