The fact that he did a lot of the drumming in Whiplash is insane in itself. Miles deserves more recognition for his performance because he was incredible. I've never felt so much tension and anxiety from just watching a teacher and student go at it. And the last 10 minutes or so in the film was nuts. Such a great movie. I hope Miles continues picking more roles like Whiplash and The Spectacular Now. His filmography isn't perfect but he's got a lot of talent.

None of his drumming was truly him. It's like the movie "drumline" when Nick cannons face isn't ever shown with his hands playing what you hear. Although he might have played one or two of the scenes genuinely, most of it was edited from another drummers' playing. I'm a very experienced drummer myself. That's why I watched this film

You can tell he's not playing for most of it because where you will hear a cymbal or drum you won't see him hit that object. Like the noise came from somewhere but he didn't make it. Obviously a lot of editing was done and someone played over what was filmed.

As a drummer, I have a few things to say... The first is to get it out of the way: never underestimate movie magic. Secondly, Miles is spot-on here where jazz is an entirely different beast and learning it isn't easy. Lastly, whether it was intentional or not, his right hand ended up holding and playing the sticks much like Buddy Rich did: using his two primary fingers to move the stick, as opposed to all 4 fingers.

I thought this would put you off for life! So ... Fletcher's approach to teaching DOES work.
@TheCardboardWarlord10 жыл бұрын
***** I absolutely believe his approach works. I also recently started playing billiards on a league. My team's captain takes it WAY too serious and, as a result, I'm constantly practicing in an effort to a) avoid ridicule and b) one day shut him up by running the table on him lol. I think you need something or someone real to represent the challenge you wish to overcome. Otherwise, you're running in a race with no checkpoints in sight.
@jazzx25110 жыл бұрын
Shawn Hilliard Ok - but if your captain pressed your head into the table and whipped you fifteen times on the back of the head with a bag of pool balls every time you missed, is that taking it too far? It seems like your captain isn't that bad - he wants to win, and makes it absolutely clear to you in no uncertain terms. He's the Sir Alex Ferguson of billiard!.
@TheCardboardWarlord10 жыл бұрын
***** haha I definitely agree that putting hands on someone is unacceptable. I actually forgot about the slap scene lol.
@jazzx25110 жыл бұрын
Shawn Hilliard How could you forget that?! We're talking about a change in teaching techniques over the last few decades. My parents would get the belt for getting a question wrong. And they are nowhere near as smart as me or any of my sisters! So it didn't work on them (I need to tell them how to work a computer every single fucking year when I visit - as well as clean their computer of all the malware they've downloaded!). I am a music tutor myself, and I have never raised my voice to a student in 18 years. Because I know that my job is to support them in times of frustration and help them. If they're not getting it, it's my fault as a teacher for not coming up with a way to identify the problem that they're having trouble understanding. I always win in the end - no face slaps required! You would have won anyway - just by quietly pursuing your craft of beating everyone else at pool. You didn't need to get belted by this idiot. Terrence's approach is wrong - it is proved to be wrong in modern sports, where records are broken through good science, individual willpower, and - yes - very motivational coaching (not involving bruises or scars at any stage). I am a self-taught professional jazz trumpeter. I didn't need Terrence Fletcher to give me his version of advice - I go through much worse in my head before I do a solo...

I love the roles he plays, in all his movies. He plays a real character, someone you could relate to. The spectacular now he played this cocky teen that goes through denial in the future. Not wanting to grow up. And I could go on about his other movies but whiplash is my definitely my favourite. Andrew brings the movie to life by his realness, by showing what dedication is. By showing what it's like to spend hours on something and have it crumble down. And the good looks and amazing personality is just a bonus of Miles 😏

There have been plenty of really high quality films based on music/musicians like Ray, Walk the Line, Crazy Heart are a few off the top of my head. This film however, wow. I am no true movie buff nor am I a skilled musician, but I do appreciate the craftsmanship of a good film and I know me some good jazz. This film, for lack of a better way of putting it, BLEW ME THE FUCK AWAY. Screenplay, editing, directing, cinematography, the acting, the music. This film is an all around masterpiece. BRAVO I don't care if I'm biased because play the drums and love jazz music this film is simply a work of art.

I totally agree. Drumming is the heartbeat and backbone of any band. Although.. Some are better than others. I wont say good job Miles Teller, because you were way better than that.

looks very serious but despite his less mature movies this guy is talented especially in the spectacular now and now i hear he was brilliant in whiplash so i'll give him benefit of the doubt of being mr fantastic even though i think he isnt the right fit for the role when he landed it

I still cannot believe it was him playing, he's truly INCREDIBLE. i mean, I already knew he was an amazing actor, but he's also a SUPERB drummer. I'm speechless.

How come interstellar get higher rating than Whiplash?I thought Interstellar was one of the top movies of the year but after watching Whiplash I could tell for sure that it's the best movie of the year hands down.
@blufish66849 жыл бұрын
How do you even compare the two? Comepletly diffrent genres of movies,sure Whiplash was more entertaining in some aspects,but you can't compare it the story of Interstellar

Lemme just say this so as to clear things up: Teller does play the drums but the reason none of his in-movie movements matches up with the audio is because the audio was something Teller had prerecorded for the film.

A few things; First, Simmons character is similar to a drill instructor in boot camp. He pushes people to the breaking point. Those who can't take it, quit, those who can, are better for it. Second; A very important scene was when the music was lost and the one dude said he couldn't play without it. I see arguments all the time about who is the best drummer. In this situation, anyone who practices for years reading charts can play the charts. The true talent is not just in memorizing the charts as shown in the movie, but in playing the music because you feel it. Playing what someone else wrote takes practice and talent, but creative genius comes from playing what you feel and having it compliment or enhance the music. Argue all day about his grip, if he was able to really play or if he is any good. The movie wasn't about that. No one has mentioned his choice to break up with the girl to focus on playing, that is real stuff. Great movie.

most of the big drummers recently got self-taught then bought tutelage later on. as long as you're playing with bands and other drummers you never really "teach yourself" entirely how to play

@DiglahProductions8 жыл бұрын
is this going to be another case where the actor doesnt credit the stunt double? I've been a drummer for 22 years, and the sounds you're hearing from most of the drums in the movie is pre reocrded or recorded or in post editing were made by a PROFESSIONAL drummer. You can even see several shots where the hands look completely different during close up shots. It's very deceptive to the average viewer to think this talented actor actually played all of the drumming in the movie.

He played it all but it was recorded in chunks. I thought he should have mentioned that the tutoring he had was from the guy who played Carl (his drumming rival) in the movie.
@fuzzylogiceire8 жыл бұрын
Kyle Crane is the name of the stunt double, he's a professional drummer who has worked with Daniel Lanois (famous producer). The drummer who recorded the actual drums is uncredited according to Peter Erskine, apparently because he's a member of the musicians union and he's not officially supposed to be doing non union gigs (which Whiplash was)
