You know a movie is great when it pulls you into the same anxiety. Like a horror movie it gave me that heart pounding feeling the character was going through. The feeling of not ever letting your guard down cause this guy was going to flip or the kid was gonna break. I've never had a horror film experience from a drama like this movie. And no matter what musical experience you have had we all can relate to this. If not some crazed band leader then it's you inside being that to your self. Expectation and drive for one self. I think we all have those times we put so much on our self. That's what makes this movie amazing. You don't have to be a drummer or in a band to identify with the feeling

I saw Whiplash at a special screening in Hollywood and J.K. did a q&a after the film. Funny enough he really couldn't stand the character of Fletcher and did not believe that it was worth it to endure such abuse to become great, nor did he agree with his "Good Job" speech. He was such a sweet guy.

@@sciencecharity I think it's up to the viewer if they want to interpret the ending as either the good version or bad, but I'd have to agree with you that it seems to suggest the bad version. I mean it's pretty evident when the father of the mc is peeking through the doors watching his son play, his facial expression isn't one of amazement or awe, it's one of horror. I mean just before in the movie him and his son were taking legal action against Fletcher and getting him kicked and now he's seeing his son playing in the same jazz band with Fletcher in it. His look signifies that his son has chosen to go down a very dark road and most likely isn't coming back it.

Supposedly Fletcher took the folder to teach a sort of silent lesson and get his point across. The original core drummer that Neiman replaced thought he had the upper hand on Neiman at that point of the movie. Fletcher took it to put them on an even playing field and show him modesty. Or he was just being a dick. 😂

I played drums in my high school jazz band, and the director was just like Fletcher. Additionally, he was a multi-instrumentalist and could rip apart anybody on any instrument, drums, piano, flute, trumpet. I think trumpet was his forte. He was a brick wall with a dry sense of humor. One night he made me stay after for like, an hour and a half to work on this eight-bar intro to a Christmas song. He wouldn't let me leave until I had it just right. I went home that night and ignored my parents and my siblings, just went straight to my room and cried my fucking eyes out. I've worked with band directors in middle school, high school, college, and independent projects, and that guy will always be my favorite director with whom I've ever worked.

Well, the other directors were pushovers or too laid back, and as a result, most of our band didn't care about their performance. They wouldn't practice at home, talk between song-changes, goof off, etc. So yeah, I liked him the most because he pushed us the hardest. And there's nothing like being pushed beyond your comfort zone, because you'll soon learn to adapt, or fail.

Joseph Jang It’s not like that in the movie... why the fuck is it like that in here? I know that particular like was originally “I’ll *fuck* you like a pig” but that was for the short film. J.S Simmons didn’t want to say it got the full length feature. So line was changed to “I’ll *gut* you like a pig.” The director still wanted the original line so he cut the dialog from the short and pasted it in the movie. I don’t know why that would make the audio higher pitch though.

I remember watching the movie for the first time. I felt everything become secondary and be like back ground noise because I felt I was IN THE SCREEN. Everytime Fletcher would shout or lash out, I would react or flinch as if I were in the guy's place. And to be able to bring that out from the audience is spectacular. I watched this last night, one of my favourite films of all time and hands down greatest music film of all time. For non musicians you can be captivated by the story as it unfolds being such a raw spectacle. For a musician (including myself) the appreciation of the endless pursuit of perfection, which is so rarely hit by artists (especially of today). This film goes above and beyond telling the viewer the sacrifice and commitment to achieve that one moment that can define you as a person.

I still remember the first time I saw Whiplash, I was with my big sister in our grandma’s living room, and we casually landed on HBO while it was playing, we just started watching it without saying anything, it wasn’t like “hey this looks good, let’s keep watching it”; we said nothing to each other, we were hooked from the get go. I still remember how sweaty I was, we were definitely at the edge of our seats and the car crash scene made my sister gasp so loud 😂 I wish I could experience it again for the first time again, because this movie is a masterclass in filmmaking

Even when im working audio tech im drawn to the sort of anxiety that makes everything so thrilling. I find myself a very harsh critic when it comes to movies, i know im not a big time movie maker or someone with credentials that might make any number of people listen to me, but movies are made for the public right, made for the people who take the time to go to the theater or buy them? This movie is one of my all time favorites (very few films reside there). The acting and subject matter is so intriguing. The editing and cinematography is for the most part fantastic. This movie made me start playing drums, and has impacted my life like no other.

I love the personality clashing, but the similar drive both characters have with each other is maddeningly captivating at the same time. The end showcased how in sync their insanity was to find what they needed, but how much they still despised each other in spite of their search. Fantastic casting and a glorious movie.

+AsianZj whether or not it's dark really comes down to interpretation. Personally I find it uplifting and it leaves me happy. It's a man who has conquered his fear of failure and risen to the challenge of his mentor/bully. He gave up things along the way, but at the same time if he had allowed himself to be broken by Fletcher he would have become a shell of person and most likely wasted away in deep depression.

A masterpiece. Such a well written antagonist, at times you go into his motives and back story which to some degree starts to undermine your dislike of him. In the end they meet after such a turmoil of events and emotions.

We watched this again, for probably the 10th time. Amazing movie. Like others, Fletcher reminds me of my Middle School band director from the early 80’s. He was a short stocky man that was amiable and professional, but when in “music mode” demanded excellence and without hesitation would let you know when you didn’t meet his expectations. In the three years of band saw him throw chairs, Manhassat stands, berate/curse and more that could not be done today. All music would be memorized and eyes were on him when conducting. There was no comprising perfection! With that said, he also wore his emotions on his sleeve and would even tear up after a great practice or amazing performance. Keep in mind we were middle school 6-8th grade public school students-Our marching, concert and jazz bands were better than the high school band! We actually performed throughout the county for special functions during school hours. From this, even at a young age could see our talents were appreciated and in demand. Those of us who were lucky enough to have him in the 10 year period he taught, consider ourselves to be in a special fraternity and are better for it. I wouldn’t trade it for the World.

Simmons character was very much like my father except my father wasn’t in the quest for artistic perfection, his goal was simply to crush my spirit in an effort to ensure I never amounted to anything in life. Although his quest ultimately failed after I ran away from home at 15 and never looked back, the near-constant physical and mental abuse I endured left it’s scars that I still feel 40 years later.

Simmons has a certain expression. From my very simple layman's perspective, it seems to be the face a ventless pressure cooker or a battery in thermal runaway would wear. The face that says "don't move... don't breathe... and you MIGHT live". Its a face that I've only ever seen before on one other person... and I was shit-my-pants afraid of him. What an actor.
