Then there was the time he got paid, but wouldn't let him play. Because his songs mixed country with R&B, some southern club in 1950s thought he was white. In his autobiography he says they paid him, but it was strange sitting in parking lot hearing the backing band doing his songs without him.

A lot of bands covered Berry tunes & never paid him the royalties that he was due. Many profited off of his music.
@PotrzebieConolly4 жыл бұрын
@@Urbicide Bands don't pay songwriters. The money goes from the record company/radio station/other performance platform -> to performing rights organizations (in Berry's case that was BMI) -> to song's publishing company and to the songwriter (although I'm not sure if it goes from BMI to songwriter directly or through the publisher). The band playing the song is out of that cycle. BMI and ASCAP are very strong about getting the money, and delivering the money to the publisher & songwriter. Now, if a band claims that THEY are the songwriters, then that's different. The Beach Boys "Surfin' USA" record was new lyrics on Berry's tune "Sweet Little Sixteen", and the record's credits originally only said Brian Wilson. But even then I've read that the entire song was given to Berry's publisher ARC Music even before the Beach Boys record came out, so the Beach Boys weren't getting Berry's money. I can't think of any other examples of bands taking Berry songs and claiming themselves to be the songwriters - kind of hard to get away with, you know.

@EvelynRobinson2210 жыл бұрын
that's how it works on TV...I have been to a few different shows' tapings and they're all the same (no mater what the show is). Before the cameras start rolling, someone will come and tell the audience to enjoy themselves and makes lots of noise/laugh/clap etc. when prompted (normally there will be someone off camera gesturing for these things). They do it to 'fill' the silence and keep the show moving...too much silence and the viewers at home may get bored or become uninterested in what they're watching. It's a natural human response to mirror what we see or hear. Not always, but many people laugh when they hear someone else laughing...even if they don't necessarily find it that funny.

The funny thing is: Drugs haven't left so much as a scratch on Keith. If anything he is exponentially more witty, engaging and full of life than any sober 70+ year old I know of. Either this is a great advertisement for drug use or a conspiracy has been revealed. In fact, it turns out that Keith never used a drug in his life???!!!
@jackgrattan14479 жыл бұрын
Michael Pierce The reason that Keith is "witty, engaging and full of life" is because he only smokes weed anymore. He wasn't ANY of those things when he was doing the hard stuff.

Keith was born when the Germans were bombing London. He grew up post war Dartford. In his book LIFE he speaks of the horrible treatment of kids back then when going to the dentist. National Service Dentist. His dentist was an x-army bloke. He said there was no mercy. The red rubber apron, like something out of an Edgar Allen Poe horror. They had rickety machines in 49 , 50, belt drive drills and electric chair straps to hold you down. They got more money extracting a tooth than a filling. . The children were given no sedation. He had such a fear following his experiences with going to the dentist. Poor little chap. The fear he developed lasted until the mid- 70's. He said that when he was young they ruined his teeth badly. I am pretty sure that he had dentures made for him. What a nice smile he has now. I know if it were me I too would have been terrified. Keith , Charlie and Mick among other famous musicians grew up during a really rough period in Britain. Not to forget all the people that inhabited the land. Let no one jump to judgement.

Keith Richards is amazing. From point of view it's not him being one of the best guitar players ever if how you rate them is how well, or complicated they can play, but rather you know it's him playing in almost any song. He created his own sound which I think it's a big reason or even main reason The Stones music is so iconic. He is the Chuck Berry of his own brand of rock music.
@manchesterexplorer8519 Жыл бұрын
People often rate guitar players by complexity which is ridiculous. For example Eddie Van Halen was an excellent guitar player that had a very complex style , but in the long run somebody like Keith Richards had the better riffs and a plethora of great unfrogettable Rolling Stones songs while Van Halen as a band has maybe 3 great songs and a ton of filler.

As I am watching this, I'm wearing my favorite shirt. On the front it has a photo of my now deceased brother, Charles, and Keith Richards; their arms around each other, smiles on their faces. They were at a club in Connecticut at the time, and they played a set of old blues tunes together, and a photographer just happened to be present at the time. The first Stones tune we ever heard together was their version of Chuck Berry's "Around and Around'. One of the things I remember about my brother is that he hated to be called 'Chuck'.

Mark Caroll Are you deaf? They didn't sell a billion albums worldwide because of Mick Jagger's voice. People have been playing Stones songs on repeat for five decades because of Keith's dirty, catchy riffs. Maybe its time you hit skip on your Justin Bieber Pandora channel.
@bernlin20009 жыл бұрын
Mark Caroll Can you hear me knocking? Try listening to that sound without your head up your ass...see if you can figure out what Mooseboy is talking about. These are riffs that are strongly influenced by the likes of Berry (and those who came after him in the 60s) but they're strong riffs nevertheless.
