And Questlove KILLS it! What's the most amazing to me is that Questlove does a 2-drummer part all by himself. If you look back at all the live versions of this song, you usually see a drummer keeping rhythm & Phil doing the iconic roll and all the fills that come afterwards. Very impressive

the way phil's voice has changed over the years is fascinating. it has a completely different character now that he's so much older, but it lends a totally fresh tone to the song & he still sings with a ton of control. he really understands how to use all the new textures his voice has taken on to tell the story of the lyrics. dude is still one of the best ever to do it.

I agree. I love the fact he sounds older. There are so many great singers who we don't get to experience them still singing. Some because they passed away and others because of health issues and some (if not many) because they know people will give then crap for not sounding the same . I know Phil is seen as one of the greatest drummers and for him to get up there still sing and let someone else take over one of his most iconic drumming parts is awesome.

2 things: -Quest love, much respect for doing the song justice and throwing in very subtle touches of funk in there. I can imagine 10 years down the road telling people he played the most iconic drum fill of all time. -My absolute favorite thing about Phil Collins, he doesn't look like one of the biggest rock stars in the history of music, just looks like your best friends dad.

I used to work for a Production Company that provided stage, PA, and Lighting for Concerts. Around the year 2002 we were providing everything for a Clearchannel/Budweiser Summer Concert Series. We ordered a whole brand new Yamaha drum kit for Questlove. Very expensive kit. I un-boxed everything. The only drums he used was Kick drum, Snare, Hi hat, Floor tom, and 2 Symbols. That's all he used, and he was badass. He can do it with less.

Chris Thomson even if it is not a complicated drum play, he was playing for Phil Collins... The man himself is a drummer, and with everyone expecting Questlove to play it as awesome as it should be, that's a lot of over-whelming peer pressure. To screw up even the slightest, would mean brand nation of every low class name for a long time.

This is not like some " on / off " thing, " doing it, or not doing it " you realize the kick drum is also heavily involved in the ' fill ' 3:25 The double kick drum with the toms, you can do it with a single drum stick, but to get the feel with the kick drum into the fill, and doing it as tightly as Questlove did, is actually very hard. you seem to believe that a avarage drummer with 10 years experience, would be able to play this with all the nuances that were in this performance. you obviously know very little of music. maybe at some point, you will also start to notice the subtle nuances that sets apart mediocre musicians from good musicians.

I don't know how anybody else feels, but I LOVE the way Phil Collins' singing voice has matured as an elderly man. He sings In The Air Tonight with slightly different set of emotional flow throughout, compared to original performances, which I think gives it a whole new dynamic... again, adding to its timelessness. Excellent!

I loved this song, all my life! Then on the night of of February 10th 2018 my wife of 28 years died in my arms, from a blood clot. The ambulance came and took her away. They had worked on her for over an hour. It was a cold and wet night. I got in our car and headed to the hospital, this song was playing over the radio. It now, makes me feel guilty. I was a nurse, and I should have seen the signs of her condition. I’m alone with my guilt. We had been planning a special 30th anniversary. January 12th 2020 I spent the day with my wife next to her. I still have the $100.00 bottle of champagne. Phil if you read this, thank you so much. I have been a fan of yours and Geniuses since the 70’s. You are a gift to this world. Thank you 🙏

Fletcher Hatcher or you can just leave him to whatever what he wants his name to be. that works too.

Like "Prince", "Madonna", "Moby", "Fatboy Slim" or any other musician that has a stage name. All terrible, right?

You can also see some relief there too. That part is fast and DEMANDS precision and PERFECT timing and you GOT to FEEL it. If any of those components are missing, it's going to sound like a cheap imitation.

Stunning. And I'm betting Questlove just checked something off his bucket list. 😭❤️

The look on his face "Oh man, I didn't f--k it up!" You could tell he'd obviously been sweating this one. It's one of the most iconic drum fills of the 1980s, but no pressure! Anyways, he nailed it.

mightymartianca Nah, I think it's THE drum fill of the 80s. Instantly fills you with 80s vibes and it's instantly timeless as well.

Watching the show with the previous couple of episodes, Questlove was sweating buckets. He didn't want to jinx it. I'm sure you are correct, that was probably top on his bucket list.

I think Quest played it safe 'not' to fuck it up. You could tell he was a bit stiff for that part. Cant say I blame him.

Fun fact, that drum kit was used especially for this song. Single heads, open bass used for the sound. Check out the 15" tom!!! Awesome. Definitely not his normal kit used on the show.

It is obviously the only way to do it live for Phil Collins, and I believe, even Ludwig would have insisted on providing that style of kit.

I work straightening saw blades. Whenever we hear this song play a few us take two cut pieces and bang on the scrap drum.
