It could have also been tied to the theory that the player was a synth when you wake up from being frozen, or Shaun may have created a synth of you while you were frozen for one reason or another.

Dogmeat actually isn't considered a companion by the game as the Lone Wanderer perk works with or without him by your side. Bethesda admitted they were originally going to let you bring Dogmeat AND a companion along, so it's most likely the lines were just cut lines that were dug up.

In the original design notes for Fallout 4, there were plans for far more playable factions than just the Minutemen, BoS, Railroad and Institute. Others's such as the Gunners, Enclave, a Raider based faction, the Atom Cats and even a vault based faction (Vault 81 would be my guess) were mentioned. While some like the Enclave where never developed at all, other like the Gunners and Atom Cats remain, but feel weird, like there was suppose to far more content related too them.

it is actually more fallout-y than the one in 3 and New Vegas. The original Centaur was an amalgamation of animals and humans. The original design had a dog Head and a human head in the same body. In the Creation Kit files there’s an unused entry on Hancock’s Terminal, stating he’s been interrogating a synth version of himself in the State House basement! This is backed by Mayor McDonough requesting Hancock be “dealt with” to the Institute (during Institute quests) and as a bit of a hint to it I guess Hancock says sometimes he wonders if he’s a synth since he can’t remember a lot of his life (companion comments). Also with Farenheit being marked as Hancock’s daughter in files, makes you wonder where they were gonna go with the story of Goodneighbor!

I'm willing to bet the 'refugee camp' was intended as exactly what you guess it to be - a settlement with friendly supermutants and also a place where Virgil is laying low. This actually makes a lot of sense, the Institute would have more trouble tackling an entire camp's worth of muties vs. one in a cave with some turrets. I would imagine it featured heavily in the ending to the Virgil quest - with the ability to side with the institute or the mooties, but was removed from the game because that would be way too much fun and way too interesting.

The Gamemaster npc might've been some kind of placeholder or debug npc used early on in development to test certain things. Fallout 4 is the first Fallout game where technically two player characters can exist at the same time, it was probably tricky with working with it at first. Every other Fallout game, you could edit yourself from the start and on the fly. Fallout 4 was also the first one to include a fully voiced protagonist, it was new for everyone working on it; they weren't sure what to expect at first. It's not uncommon for Bethesda games to include oddly-named npcs they used to test things.

You could play as either one, once you make that decision, it effectively turns the other one into an npc, which I imagine was tricky. In previous games, there was only one player character that you could edit later if you so wanted. Now there's two and there's twice as much everything that needs to be accounted for. Everything that you could do as one player character but again as the opposite gender.

Maybe that old version of Nate was a different route they planned on taking with the Institute in the beginning. Rather than just taking Shaun they also make a synth of you. Or you keep Shaun and they make a synth of you. ORRR you're the synth and you find the real Nate! Also, I think different variations of Centaurs would be cool since they're mashed up people anyway. They should have multiple different looking ones.

For that first one, what if the Sole Survivor Nate was actually a battle-trained researcher (such as the people who designed the T-45 power armor, which he knows how to use from the beginning). Therefore, what if he (going on a stretch here) utilize the technology from Vault 101, the tech from Goodneighbor, and recovered equipment from the Institute (or the teleportation device he built) to try to go back to the past and find a way to stop the Great War from happening (or something like that, maybe warn Nora of Shaun’s kidnapping so that she would cooperate and wouldn’t get killed)? However, what if the device malfunctioned and only sent him back to the time of Fallout 2 (or 3). Then, unable to go either direction, he was forced to wander the Commonwealth for years and wait for his younger self to emerge from the vault, this sparking a quest to either destroy any remaining technology to prevent the failed time machine or improve the design to do what’s it meant to (maybe your reward is Nora as a companion or something). And maybe, maybe it was cut before they cut make a Nora version of the quest.

The old Nate is a synth that Shaun made if you play as Nora, like wise; if the player plays the game as Nate a older Nora synth would be roaming around too. Quest: with the destruction of the institute Shaun's legacy hunts for revenge against his parent with a synth spouse of the player. Based on interaction if you have young synth Shaun with you, you might get this synth as a companion as well. Furthering your downward path to insanity.

I loved the centaurs in F3, they creeped me the F out, and the tappy hand-feet where cute 😂. I was and still am disappointed that there where no centaurs in F4 and the F4 concept art isn't as creepy as the F3 version

I really wish the super mutant camp was in the game. Fallout 2 and NV did such a great job fleshing out the mutants. I loved how mutants, which tried to conquer the wastelands in the original Fallout, where forced to “coexist” the best they could with humanity. Fallout 3 and 4 really drops the ball, making 99% of mutants just generic orc enemies.

I imagine roaches would have gibed like birds an not have been interactable. As for the centaurs I would have loved it if they were made by the institute as an attempt to figure out how they evolved in the capital wastes. It would have helped make the institute way more evil

Centaurs were the only mobs I never wanted to be caught with in fallout (well, except for a deathclaw inside a building.) to find them cut from the game was at first a huge relief, but then I missed being tense and worrying what I was going to find around the corner.
