I think that the game would benefit from a step by step perk tutorial here. Obviously it needs the option to skip it for alts, but new players would really benefit from a step by step walkthru getting perk cards, ranking them up, swapping them out, and scrapping them.

Each build is to their own, commando gives you a head start as you get the plan for the combat rifle which makes learning the mods easier, same with pistol build, cause automatic 10 mm can be scary

Personally i like shotgunner and commando u will never run out of shotgun ammo and commando is pretty fun

Yeah shotgun ammo almost feels silly to sell at my shop, I have so much of it constantly so I imagine nobody is ever gonna buy my shells unless they're absolutely OUT

Gunslinger was a ton of fun for a level 1-50 playthrough. But i abandoned pistols for rifles only after that.

I remember we talked about this on stream. Slugger is the best all around as far as not wasting perk cards, and conserving ammo. I use slugger to make different builds because it is the best blank slate. Cool video, thanks for doing the research.

I found awareness useful in fallout 4 starting out learning what enemies are weaker to ballistic or energy

It definitely is a useful learning perk, but its usefulness is limited and some new players will have no idea what those symbols mean. It needs a legend.

I used the melee one to get a jump start on my one punch PA build, Tesla arms are just so busted, I don’t think I’ve done higher damage

Gunslinger was the best for me, used the same gun all the way to about lvl40/45 early game the western revolver you get is a beast, just put a red dot sight on it and then just go for those sneak head shots and the thing just destroys most enemy's early game. I wouldn't put melee above it as you just don't have very good amor options and your HP isn't great, and you will catch diseases constantly (which is a issue at early game) if you can hold out till lvl 25 and scavenge a set of power armour then its better, but the fusion core chasing at lower levels is painful, as Higher level players normally just grab the fusion cores out of them and leave the Armor so they can recharge them. so on paper slugger is best But in reality gunslinger is the smarter choice.

Actually, Commando lacking Gunsmith is _really_ a drawback. Yes, you get the Combat Rifle plan... but it takes Gunsmith 3 just to build the gun. So no, you can't build and scrap guns to learn the mods, until you acquire that perk.

Maxed-out cards all need to be down-selected in most cases anyway. I don't think anyone starting at Level 1 would regard these Level 20s as optimal.

The only thing I would add here is that your weapon preference should still probably be the deciding factor as you will most likely stick with whatever weapon class you are, and are unlikely to change that. This is because the perk requirement to change it will be much higher than just sticking with what you have. Even switching to energy weapons is a bit tough when you have all your points in something else. So if you see yourself wanting to play longer term with a shotgun, or Rifle etc. then you should pick thst class. You will still get card packs and be able to level it up fairly quickly and then you won't have to change your focus, only to find out you have a bunch of points spent on cards you never needed. Chose what makes sense to you.

I'm playing a fairly new shotgun build (almost level 50) and I found the early levels so easy with it. Cold Shoulder undoubtedly helped there but shotguns are very powerful at low levels and ammo is never a problem.

Level 115 now, but of course I started out with the "VATS Build", and I think I am still struggling because of that choice due to trying to find what works in the perks.

Anything works in vats besides heavy weapons unless you are using the plasma caster

can do is usful early for caned coffee so useful for low ap starts, and some of the foods if you like the well fed buff

I used this for the shotgun build, and it became very powerful very quickly. Big power drop off between 40 and 50, though. And a major issue with all these builds is hitting lvl 40 before you've gathered enough resources. Struggling to maintain armour without having even marked Fort Defiance on the map was a real problem. And you may want to keep scrounger for a while at least, as you'll burn through all the saved shells as soon as you pick up a pepper shaker...

Shotgun has a guaranteed Cold Shoulder, Heavy has a guaranteed Final Word. Fixer and Auto axe are great but you need to farm the god roll for them.

So, one thing to point out, expert commando is not available at level 20. It's level 25. Expert gunslinger is 24... I believe the only expert card that unlocks for level 20 is rifleman.

They did an adjustment a while back making some cards available at earlier levels. I think expert commando is now 20 and expert gunslinger 15.

Oh man!!! I was hoping this "Battle Ready Dweller" thing would help solve my problem, but it seems I was wrong. Because this f*cking game sometimes lag between button presses, I messed up a few of my perk cards choices, picking up wrong cards or cards which I alread had at max level. As I read that you have a limited choice of cards to pick through the game, this misshaps were weighting heavily on my mind, so much so that I was thinking about starting a new character (I'm still at level 25, so, it won't be that much of a loss), cuz the character respec feature this game offers didnt give me the option to pick my cards all over again. I was hoping that this battle ready dweller thing would help me recover my loss faster, but now I see it will be basically the same situation I'm currently in, I'll be stuck with cards that I don't have any interest in. So, back to level 1 again.

You know what? After thinking a bit, maybe the commando build isn't that bad for me. Looking closely into its perk card selection, I find that most, well, maybe half, or fewer, of them are cards that I would have picked at my first 20 levels, and the rest are cards that I probably would have picked in later levels.
