'Executioner' is the very last recording I produced with the Peter Steele (Ratajczyk), fronted band 'Fallout'. June 1981. Fallout, split up soon after this last recording session. This is my 2021 remastering of that original 4 track recording we did at the Termini Recording Studio, Soundscape, on avenue M in Brooklyn back in 1981. I built the studio in the late 70s and Fallout began work with me there not long after I opened my doors. Members from this band went on to become Carnivore and Type O Negative, Peter being the founder of all three.

I'm amazed that Peter's talent was so evident before he even turned 20. The Fallout recordings all absolutely rip.

When I first heard them play... that was it. I knew this was amazing and that he was a great writer... One first meeting I began recording them at my SOUNDSCAPE in Brooklyn and did my bets to get the signed. Sadly I was not able to get them a deal... I obviously knew the wrong people. What a missed opportunity. FALLOUT I think... would have been huge. Peter's writing with John Campos as an occasional co-writer and his influence in general was a wonderful mix. To me its like Waters and Gilmore. It broke my heart when they broke up. I was amazed! WHY! I said. Someone one gave some people in the band some VERY BAD advice. long story... in my memoir...

[Verse 1] Morning breaks, the hangman wakes, hurries to the gallows Mercenary, adversary, gets orders he must follow A broken axe, his only tools, uses them with skill Practices on prideful fools, they're paying him to kill I hate you! [Verse 2] Ice cold stare, a hungry bear, eying up his victims Sweating fear, laughing jeers, still wish that you're in prison Around your neck the noose is placed, begins to pray to God It's too late, you can't escape, the sins within your heart [Chorus] Executioner! Executioner! [Verse 3] Words are said and you're dead, guilty with no trial And when you see a gloomy face, you walk your last mile Behind the mask, who can tell, eyes like glowing coals I look again, he's gone to hell, the hangman has no soul, ah! [Chorus] Executioner! Executioner! Executioner! Hahaha!

I can definitely hear the songwriting heading in the direction Peter took with Carnivore. Did you produce the recordings that Fallout released on their single? I remember hearing it years ago and really liking "Rock Hard" - complete with Peter's dark, tongue in cheek lyrics and Josh's baroque keyboard sounds that defined Type O!

@@rtermini that's a shame to hear. I've just been digging into the new Rhino deluxe edition of Black Sabbath's Vol. 4 and the bonus discs full of incomplete takes and false starts have been a pleasure to study, as a fan and as someone curious about their writing/recording process. I know I'm not alone in believing there would be interest in hearing even incomplete material.

Hi Richard. Random question for you that I hope you can help with. A friend and I noticed the other day that all of the interviews stating Peter used Boss pedals date to 1995 or later. None of the albums prior to October Rust mention what brands of gear were used by the band and there is at least one video online of a 1994 Type O show where Peter is clearly using something other than Boss pedals (it looks like either a multi effects unit or a midi controller). Do you know whether he used something different from the famous Boss DS-1/CH-1/DD-3 chain before 1995, like in the early days of Type O or back during Carnivore/Fallout?
@rtermini
@rtermini 2 жыл бұрын
I really could not tell you... I am the kind of gear head that basically makes use of whatever I can find that interests me at the time... and or I have a couple of things I have been using for decades and might still use... SO... point is.. that whatever Peter might have used at a given gig or session was never a MUST .... it was whatever he was using that week or month... or whatever.. So I never really paid too much attention to which brand or model... he was always using something.... well... mostly always... He played around a lot with stuff...... I even put Louie's drum set through my Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress at a live gig... that was nice... for the solo.... a Fallout gig... back around 1979. So I remember that piece of gear because i had it forever and used it a lot on so many things.... and it was my first flanger I owned back in the 70s.... so as I say I really can not tell you what gear he was using at what session or gig.

@@MP-go6hu I saw that video too. I commented on it over there too, but I'm not convinced that's an Ape-2 in that video. The dimensions aren't correct at all, if you compare them closely side by side. A friend of mine reached out to Josh about it and, according to Josh, whatever it was, Pete likely didn't use it beyond that one show. It could been a piece of borrowed equipment, for all we know.

Good question! Wow. Peter's bass had no effects on it at all... just right into his amp... I have forgotten which amp... and he was going thought a couple of basses back then .. so not sure about the bass either. I can not believe I can not remember this. John used a Fuzz box but I can not remember which one... I still have my MXR distortion plus from those days... I got mine I think in 1976... John may have been using that... certainly something with a similar tone ranges. Pretty sure John was using a Fender Strat.

@@rtermini cool. Still astonishes me the sounds people like you wrangled out of just a few tracks. My first studio was Protools HD and I had processing for days to play with. Thankfully I had a guy who used to be an engineer at Olympic and Abbey Road teach me some of his old tricks and how to not get bogged down with seeking perfection. I’ve always been fascinated with the gear side of things, it’s how I ended up owning a music store and becoming a repairer. He was always an interesting guy when it came to his basses. Always presented this ‘don’t give a fuck about what I’m using’ attitude, but was always trying new gear. Whenever a customer says they need a long scale bass to tune low, I just remind them of his Alembic Spoiler which only had a 32 inch scale.

Hi and thanks for the interest. I did the.. what sounds like guitar solos, playing my Keytar synth set up I have used for decades... basically it is a Yamaha KXZ5 driving a EMU Proteus... I then run that output through my MXR Distortion box I have had since 1973 or so, and that goes through a WhaWha and then Echo.. all that goes through a Fender tube amp set to 11 and there you have it... Richard was the recording process all live 3 or 4 microphones on the drums? What was your recorder at the time? how many channels?
@rtermini
@rtermini 11 ай бұрын
Great question. My studio was what I called a dual 4track. I had two four track machines and would record to one machine filling all the tracks live... then bounce to the second machine either mono to one track or steer to two and then add over dubs on the two or three tracks left... then all that was mixed to a stereo machine. The method was very much Beatles 1966. (As with Sgt. Pepper recordings--- made use of reduction mixing, a technique in which one to four tracks from one recorder are mixed and dubbed down onto a master four-track machine, enabling the engineers to give the group more tracks.) So the band was recorded live... drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards. Perhaps four mics on drums... bass a mix of direct and mic from the amp and mic on the guitar amp. Keyboards could be direct and or mic with amp... depending... then the Peter's vocal would be overdubbed and any additional leads, vocal parts or other parts needed. And that was that. FALLOUT typically did two, maybe three takes max ... and II would simply picked best take and bounce it for overdub.

@@Galetox I did not record or produce the Carnivore LP but I did play on it... it was recorded in a 24 track analog studio. 2 inch tape. many mics... etc. I created the world war three soundscape using my Oberheim TVS1 Synthesizer at that studio. I had done the same soundscape for a Fallout song in my studio years earlier... and the one on the Carnivore LP was a recreation of that... honestly the one I did at my place was better, and this was for several reasons.
