Depends on if he gets his Repair skill up ( If it's still up, he can just do it. ) - and he just breaks junk rounds down and uses the parts for hand-loaded rounds. Way better than junk rounds. Plus you can just straight up make ammo if they can grab a reloading bench - which Mike handed him a utility kit for that so he can just keep producing ammo out of the plethora of cases. ( That's why you find cases, primer, etc. They're trying to incentivize you to invest in Repair if you haven't so you can produce more ammunition out of all these raw resources you can loot. )

I love that they gave Zach some starting insanity in DUST, because of his psychotic break at the end of the Marko questline- the teleporter monsters, the non-damaging mines and the Skeleton With The Head Of A Lady are all hallucinations brought on by the player character's insanity.

There's a backstory of how the Mojave got like that, which is told through environmental storytelling, notes, etc. And there's the main (and only) quest of the mod, which is to escape the Mojave. Not really a 'story' beyond that, at least that I experienced, though to be fair I did give up playing DUST after entering the New Vegas sewers and getting absolutely trashed by super-OPed ghost people.

And when disaster struct they blames it on the courier. When in truth the ncr's greed and inhumane experiments did it.

There are several mods that sort of piggyback off of this one.. Most are just stability modes and once for balance. While others elements of other mods to it. One of them being that you meet the courier and he'll actually talk to the player instead of attacking like all the other survivors do. With a few variations of him either being with the NCR, house, Legion, Independent, or there's even one where he actually siding with Father Elijah during the events of dead money. Which promptly resulted in a series of events that led what the current state of the Mojave in this mod. I'm gonna curious what ma'am will be using you'll be using in this playthrough of if Mike's just gonna make a bunch himself.

The shotgun from the gas station at 8:00 is probably supposed to be like the Shambler from the Metro series. A makeshift semi-automatic, open cylinder, revolver shotgun. It's a real shame they didn't get the animation for it though, It really is something to behold. Speaking of which, I would love a go at the Metro series, particularly 2033, where Mike just dubs all of the characters lines in his best impersonations with Zach responding as himself as if he were actually in the tunnels, instead of just the usual silence.

I think the makeshift shotgun is based off the Shambler shotgun from the Metro games, because that was what I immediately thought of upon seeing it. At least before Exodus because in that game, it can be modified to have a magazine or be belt fed.
