Because Reynard doesn't really use magic i can actually see one of the arcane ghouls pick poketing one of his jumbo death arrows (which is just a bunch of arrows taped together) and saying "YEESSSS THE MAGIC IS MINE"

With disadvantage, an average roll is 7.18, so with +11, an average to-hit number will be 18.18, easily enough to hit many monsters. This means that Reynard's heavy crossbow would still be very effective a 400ft. Edit: Assuming (from things that Mark has said) that the arcane ghouls have 17AC, this means that even a slightly below average roll would hit. This means that the best strategy would be for Reynard to move to 400 ft away, fire twice then move 30ft (his movement) the ghouls would dash and use twice this but would still take 14 rounds for them to reach him, by which point they would probably be all dead (14 rounds is 28 shots and if we assume that just over 50% hit, e.g. 15-16 hits at 1d10+(probably 5, I'm not sure) for average damage of 10.5 per hit 10.5x16=168 damage). On top of this, Elora has a longbow with similar range and damage (168x2=336). If by now thay had possibly survived, Cam and Jiutou would be able to deal even more damage once they got close.

Yeah but Mark could always say "the ghouls proceed to drag the guardian away from you, draining all it's power away". Yeah, shooting from say 150 ain't that bad, but going 400 is just too cheezy. But yeah, they are really scared at making rolls with disadvantages, not realising that they are not as week as they used to be and a 7 or 8 is not a dead roll anymore.

mustafa geldiev The sentinel is stuck so they couldn't drag it away and if they weren't giving chase then you can forget the moving back thing and if you really need to then send in Cam and/or Jiutou to stop the ghouls from attacking the sentinel. I know that this is definitely cheesing it but that's kind of the point just to show that with a bit of meta thinking and some proper looks at tactics, they could achieve an incredible amount. This strategy would be even more effective if they weren't in wild magic, because Cam would be able to load up on high range spells and at about 120 feet, would be able to deal serious damage. Lastly, if you could assume that Trellimar was with them, at 120 feet, he would be able to start doing two eldritch blasts per round for 1d10+charisma (probably 4) for an average of 9.5 per shot or 19 per round for the four rounds that it takes to catch up (19x4=76) and if necessary, he could use other (non-cantrip) spells and deal more damage, or even wait until the ghouls are right next to him and then cast dimension door (which lets him travel a maximum of 120 feet) this would give him 76 damage each time he casts it and as a 10th level warlock, he would have 2 spell slots. This means that he would be able to deal 76 damage 3 times (76x3=228) and once the ghouls got near the party they could be distracted by a wild-shape Elora, Jiutou, and Cam while he and reynard deal a combined value of (19+10.5=29.5) average per round.

Ok how do i explain this to you simply - Your tactic while great at efficiency is just removing an encounter by abusing weapon range and hit bonus. It may be interesting as a thought, but if someone tried to do it in a campaign of mine i would basically say "as you move back, four more ghouls appear blocking you path back. If a party member is going to abuse a poorly thought thing so can the DM.

mustafa geldiev I often DM as well and I certainly wouldn't allow it myself, I'm just looking at how the game can be broken in different ways (and probably putting too much effort into it). In order to stop this, I would probably say that after the first range, not only do you have disadvantage but also have a -1 for every 10 feet over this amount, which means that reynard would have a -30 which would mean that he would have to crit in order to hit (a 5% chance) I would also make it so that crits deal normal (non-crit) damage at any range above the normal range (100 feet in reynard's case).

mustafa geldiev It totally makes sense for them to encounter more ghouls, as by the time the other ghouls had got to them, the party would have moved ((30x14=420)420+400=820) 820 feet (or even more if they had used dimension door/other means of magical travel to get further away). Moving that distance while constantly firing would definitely attract many, many more ghouls and we would probably be looking at a TPK (if we wanted to be realistic) but Mark wouldn't let that happen, he probably won't let them die no matter what, because the viewers just love these characters so much and might not like the new ones as much.

I know it's been said before, but in other ways, but I love how Tom approaches situations with roleplay influencing actions, and (*crucially*, though it couldn't happen without the cool creative incentive) Mark figures it out mechanically and makes rolls for it, allowing pretty much anything the players want to happen happen. It sounds trivial when put forward in black and white, but it's what sets D&D apart from a video game. This is the freedom that people talk about, that brings it beyond 'roll X for Y result; repeat'. I feel all players, Tom included to some extent, sort of lose that as they become more familiar with the rules. (speaking as someone working through this campaign, but up to date with Aerois as of posting)

The range that Mark mentioned ( 100/400 ) is the same as heavy crossbow range, so I agree with you and suspect that Tom probably wrote down the wrong damage die for his weapon. There's a feat that lets you fire multiple times with a crossbow. It has 2 other benefits, one which only matters if you are using a hand crossbow, the other is that firing while in melee does not grant you disadvantage as it normally would. In the past I think they have expressed concern about Reynard suffering from disadvantage while in melee though, so maybe he has the feat, or maybe he does not. It's hard to tell.

Yeah, that's why I said they expressed concern about it before. I didn't finish watching this episode yet, where they showed again for sure that he does get disadvantage in melee. I still think he just wrote down the wrong damage and it should be a d10. It seems more likely to me that they forgot crossbows can normally only fire 1/round, then that they reskinned a longbow as a crossbow and then gave it the range of a crossbow too.

I thought Wilhelm was a heavy repeating crossbow, I remember Mark had described it before as loading with magazines and having a cocking lever. I don't know if repeating crossbows _officially_ exist in the 5th Edition rules, but they were a staple of 3rd/3.5th, 4th, and Pathfinder; they allowed you to make your normal number of attacks per round instead of just one.

Although Tom's weird strategies in combat are sometimes cool and work, why desn't he actually just move away and shoot. In one fight he is literally next to a ghoul and instead of moving away (with escape the horde so they have disadvantage) then shoot twice and attack with the magic scimitar. He is literally just making it harder by taking a bunch of damage.

By the way do we ever find out what Reynard's favoured environment and enemies are? All I know is that one of them is giant. Just curious because it doesn't pop up so far the only one that did is giant. Not long ago he used one of its bonuses you only get in a favoured terrain but I don't think he knew that and only saw that if you travel for an hour or more you get bonuses.
