It's a common issue and not just with mobile games - many RPGs have DLC available which gives you overpowered weapons or armour from the start of the game. It's a nice power rush when you start, but it rapidly collapses when you realise that you've tricked yourself into removing the fun from the game, since winning is no longer a matter of skill or challenge - and you've often also destroyed your own chance of winning, because once you reach the endgame where those items are suited to your level, you don't have the skill needed to win against enemies that are actually of the same level as you. Cheating in single-player games has its place, but needs to be approached with an abundance of caution. These days I largely limit it to games which I know I'll never beat honestly and just getting the power fantasy is fine because I get to see large chunks of the game that I would otherwise never see. Usually shmups. I played the original Turrican on the Amiga this way and had a blast.

The game was a bit of a pay to win when it launched, but since you can now get Mr. Handys as rewards for certain tasks, that's no longer the case. But, yeah, for some things, it can take a rather long time if you don't give them money. And, I'm fine with that.

Ì think the saddest thing about fallout shelter is that its sequel is so far from the original that's it should be its own game. Not a sequel or a continuation of the previous game. It stopped being mini colony/city building sim its just a gacha pvp game that has fallout shelter stickered on it.

All of my explorers have dragon’s maws and most of my dwellers have maxed stats and I’m always at the bottlecap limit. I earned it all legitimately, but I never really return to that vault anymore. Every single time, there’s a radscorpion infestation(which funnily enough are significantly more deadly than deathclaw attacks) that will continually eradicate any of the remaining power of the vault.

This is a topic very close to my heart, breaking the confines of what a game typically allows you to do is one of my favorite things, be it using cheats in gta, installing mods for fallout or creating a private minecraft server with custom gameplay tweaks. One thing you have to remember when doing any of it, is that you're no longer just merely a player, buy stepped into the role of a game designer, probably without even realizing it. The programmed in restrictions are no longer there, the only thing stopping you from editing out all of the fun from a game is yourself. You've got to ask yourself, is making this change, giving myself these abilities or items, installing this mod done to alleviate a frustration you have with a game and allowing you to continue enjoying a game that otherwise would be ruined for you by these arbitrary restrictions placed by the developers, or are you actively editing out fun gameplay you'd otherwise enjoy. The answer isn't always simple or clear, but you've got to do your best. Going outside of the experience designed for you makes you responsible for your own fun, it's only up to you to decide which aspects of a game are stopping you from enjoying the game, and bypassing which ones will lead to you just ruining your fun.

9:57 There is technically protection, as the save files are encrypted (json), but the decryption key of course has to be included inside the game executable for it to be able to open the saves and somebody managed to extract it.

I always play survival mode games and find that the early game is the most enjoyable. The addition of the streaming characters: Lucy, Max, the Ghoul adds some depth helping speed the game up. Elevators are cheap, someone already suggested staggering rooms. Always send your strongest out to scavenge common weapons and outfits. Grow your population slowly. Knock out every objective. On quests equip your toughest character with melee weapon. Concentrate fire, change your tank's target to protect your weakest. Don't activate criticals unless you encounter a boss or an emergency. Build based on need not symmetry, and don't upgrade unless your dwellers are sufficiently leveled. Mid-game train only necessary skills. Build radio station and stack recruits outside. Endurance outfits help add HP when leveling up. Agility speeds damage on quests and luck helps criticals. Level up your most well rounded in the wasteland. The end game I find less fun, building legendary stuff and training offspring and running missions mainly for speedups... but still good when you on hold or waiting in lines. When its too boring rinse and repeat.

The combat in Fallout Shelter is some of the most horrendous fighting I've had to put up with. It's soooo slow and so annoying when the enemy keeps hitting you but your dweller REFUSES to hit back.

I just wish they'd add a way to move barracks once you hit cap. I also wish they'd give you a way to deal with random trash settlers sitting at vault entrance when you have maxed 200 settlers. It's annoying to have to toss a max stated dweller when you hit max waiting at door so you can open a lunch box.

I love the video, but I think even more detrimental to The fallout pay to win problem is that you get really powerful vault dwellers that can do all the quest for you right at the start thanks to the TV show quest. In a free-to-play save this took a lot of the attention and difficulty out of the early game and lifted the veil in a way. Much like your experience with cheats did

I started playing again around the time the fallout show dropped with a new vault and only playing here and there since then and I managed to amass over 250k caps and over 200 quantum colas, bunch of good gear, dwellers, pets, and 3 mr handys. I haven't paid them a single cent. Just watch some ads here and there, don't rush, save up your stuff, do quests and send dwellers into wasteland. It's definitely not pay to win like other mobile games, it most certainly helps but in no way mandatory for progression.

Well made video. The paying system has completely changed over time. Once they added junk the lunch boxes became pretty obsolete, since instead of getting legendary outfits and weapons, you now get legendary junk. But you can get legendary junk in the wasteland and you can craft anything you need now. I’ve played this game since 2015, and it used to be more pay to play. You don’t need to spend a dime now. Also, nuka colas are barely helpful

One thing that is annoying is pets, since they are hard to get. But Mr. Handys can be collected from quests and I only need 2 more before I have one per every floor. It makes no sense that they give junk in lunch boxes because it’s actually so bad, and they used to be amazing

Played it for a long time without paying for anything in the game. Had a lot of dwellers high level, with most of them with maximum SPECIAL. Had a decent production of legendary weapons and armor, and one day the game crashed, I opened it again and I lost my save file. Never gonna play it ever again.

I played this game a lot, payed Bethesda about €10 which I think is a good number for a game like this. But to get all achievements on Steam we need to collect 20 legendary dwellers. I cheated in the Lunchboxes needed, do not remember the exact amount but well over 1000 boxes. At the time I had never played one of the "modern" Chinese mobile games so to pay over €1000 into a mobile game felt daunting. Sadly these days that feels "cheap", seeing what people spend in the mentioned Chinese mobile games.

Honestly my tip is to get around 40 peopel then just send yori strongest to level up in the wasteland while you slowly imporve your peoples special stats in the already unlocked rooms. Also if you care a lot to level up faster watch the adds every 2 hours and catch the mystery guy also every 2 hours and wath hid add to get 5000 caps everytime . When you have 3 dwelers high level and high special do the events if teh tv show and some missions taht hive you pets or lunchboxes. When all ready hsve yoru max special dwelers have babies snd wala

I get that. But at least the stats actually matter in combat during quests. Agility is the most important, and it affects how often they attack. Luck gives you more critical hits and perception makes the critical hit thing slower

I started playing this game again on my new phone after previously playing on an old device In roughly a month, I have reached 120 dwellers and wait time just don't really hold you back anymore I am at the point where nukacola just gets stockpiled because once I do all of the things that need to be done I am satisfied with my play session I think that the transactions in this game only speel to people who have recently started playing and as you play and have more things to deal with these boosters aren't really needed anymore. I think that anyone can enjoy this game without spending money because the player gets given enough premium currency and items just from playing to be able to sustain your attention. In my case there's more than enough.

Great video. However, I got to point out one error, the return trip is only half-time. If a dweller is out 3 days, it only takes 36 hours to return. Another annoying cavoite is that if at any point on the return trip, if you turn your dweller BACK around and out the clock goes back to the original distance time of 3 days and will continue to increment from there. then the return trip will once again be half of the new value, NOT the returned value you already awaited.

really enjoyed the video, been a fallout shelter player on and off for years. I just want to say that one key factor that never really made the game boring for me was the element of inserting our own narrative and storyline with the characters, usually I'd go on start a vault with a vague end goal where as for example, I'd collect the customization blueprints for minutemen, brotherhood of steal, and the institute to faction my vault with each having significant leaders from each sections. What I'm trying to say is that despite opening the Pandora's box of abundance that the video implied made the game dull or to some sense lose its innocence, I believe it can't take away our ability to give those small moments meaning and purpose that's significant to our individual experiences. I've never saw fallout shelter as a game where you rush to the end or unlock every room etc. it's always been a game where you get to create an entire world and storyline that you can immerse yourself in, so yea' great video and best of luck to you brother.

I love Fallout Shelter for its versatility in playtime. You can play it once per day, every hour, in 5-minute increments, or in 20-minute increments. The timers are there to build suspense and delay gratification, just as you mentioned. The only downside is the amount of micromanaging you have to do, which starts to become very tedious around 50 dwellers.

@@slimbomb minor essay incoming, but this youtuber gave me a LOT to think about, much more than just information on fallout shelter that I was curious to learn. I hadn't finished the video when i commented, but the tips he gives us are very useful. Even more so was the anecdote he told about "breaking the immersion" because I have struggled with this very same loss of satisfaction ever since i learned how to hack Castle Cats on my android in 2017. It happened again with other minor games, then majorly with Animal Crossing New Horizons when I discovered time glitches and treasure islands. I struggle to get the satisfaction I got in 2021 when I first got the game and played for a month straight, right before my save data corrupted. In an effort to redo my island without the time constraints, I ended up spoiling the whole joy of the game itself, waiting to receive what you worked so hard to gain. At this point, hours after watching the video, for the first time ever, I have not decided whether I want to hack the game and give myself what I felt like I was lacking. FOr once, I didn't immediately go to hack the game. I'm actually sitting on it, and thinking about it. No, I don't like spending money, and regrettably I already have on fallout shelter, but I can play the game without cheats OR money. The youtuber gave me some critical advice, and some very chewy food for thought. Do i want to hack the game, like I have for so many others, even Fallout 4 itself so my power armor never runs out of fusion cores? or do I try playing it until I've run out of satisfaction organically, then hack it to get that completionism itch? Still have yet to decide.

I understand your points, but saying Fallout Shelter is pay-to-win is a bit of a stretch. As you’ve already pointed out you can simply mod everything, sure it removes the feeling of achievement but if you want to grind a bit simply don’t mod or at least don’t max everything. I was completely free-to-play back when the game just launched and idk if I was just lucky or what but I got either a legendary dweller or weapon from each lunch box I got from objectives/ quests. My vault had a Mister Handy on every floor and I didn’t spend a cent on the game. I only started spending on pet carriers months later after I was completely maxed and wanted to create a “Noah’s Ark” kinda vibe having my vault filled with animals and people. Sure after a while everything slows down, quests take longer to complete, wasteland exploration and return times and such, but isn’t that natural for every game? After my vault reached its peak I didn’t play as much sure, because I didn’t need to everything was now on autopilot. I’d only login in for missions or just to check up on things for old times sake, and I was satisfied with that. After playing religiously for months it was time to sit back and relax.

Yeah, I don't mean to suggest you actually need to pay to win, but rather the game incentivizes you to pay for cola and crates which could ironically end up ruining the experience if you decide to overindulge. I'm glad you've been enjoying it! FOS is a fun little game for sure.

@@Thedeepfriedgamingpodcast I understand, I recently started playing again about a week ago and started looking up videos on the game that’s how I even found yours. I did the date and time glitch on my phone and got over 300 lunchboxes from it, sadly the glitch stopped working for me. I don’t feel too bad though I mainly wanted legendary dwellers and only got 2 from all those boxes 🤣, still, legendary dwellers aren’t all that since you can train up your own dwellers to be far superior to them. But legendaries are nice since they are actual NPCs from other games. I did end up buying 40 boxes from the Memorial Day sale, also bought 10 Mister handy and 80 pet carriages. I kinda want to buy another 40. I really love the pets in this game.

​​@@wretch9514i only got the pet carriers because they were half price, of 40 about 28 were worth keeping, half of the ones i kept are 24% damage resistance, a few are for wasteland junk and caps, a few are crafting, a few are damage, a few are barely worth using, only got like 4 legendary pets out of them. i was hoping for a 2nd and 3rd wasteland return speed pet, but didn't get a good one, i only have one 4x from normal play.

I understand this video but fallout shelter is more than what you think. There is strategy to the game, ways to optimize and make perfect vaults. The key mechanics stay the same but I assure you the need for perfection is what fuels this game. Legendary max specials with maximized endurance and levels. Perfect breads of human that can work for your vault.

Yo, I know I'm about 2 weeks late, but daaaaang this is an amazing video. I actually did, without spending money or cheating, max out my vault. You nailed the explanation of that feeling of pointlessness which sinks in when you enter the endgame, and with no other gear to collect, rooms to build, or quests to complete, the shell of this game really falls right off. I have 1M taps, 900 nuke cola, max of everything, 194 dwellers, almost all at max special. Never spent anything. It took me 4 months without particular effort, not so much time for this type of game

I played FOS when it first came out. Recently I came back to FOS after watching the new Fallout TV show and it was nice to see the new things that had been added. Now there's pets, crafting and themes. As a TV show tie-in game I'm really just playing for the stories, screw the gameplay loop. So if I unlocked everything to allow me to get through all the missions, that would allow me to actually _finish_ the game in a sensible amount of time. With enough Mr. Handy to automate resource collection it becomes true idle game. Unlike the Star Trek Lower Decks idle game which requires much more active playing and *_so many ads_* that it's misleading for them to call it an idle game.

This is like when that game journalist called Fallout 4 bad after they used cheats to beat the game. "This idle survival game sux cuz I skipped past the idle parts and gave myself all the resources I needed to survive! 😠" Like bro, what did you expect? I understand your point is that spending money on the game will make it less enjoyable, but I think you're missing the fact that cheating is limitless whereas paying is limited by the amount you're willing to spend on the game. Even the biggest whales won't be able to use their cola as flagrantly as you can with cheating.

imo fallout shelter does good at what its designed for, a time waster. when you add time skips to said game, it removes some of the fun of waiting for the next find in the wasteland, or your dwellers heroic return from a quest pockets full of goodies. if you put in a way to skip that it ruins the fun you once held for the game

Why would anyone spend money on this? The only time ive ever died and lost was because i didnt realize if you dont have anyone to fight the intruders will chase all your pregnant women into the living quarters and its game over. Didnt even know it was possible til it happened 😂

To be honest this is why I'm against microtransactions that affect gameplay. If you include them in your game, you become incentivized to balance the game to encourage players to spend money, and that always makes for a worse experience for the player than if you had balanced your game around having fun. If they wanted to make a better game, they should have either given the player more ways to earn quantum, or should have balanced the activities to take a more reasonable amount of time.

a month late ik but for IOS users in fallout shelter just go to settings and change your time and date and grab that weekly report getting many caps and lunch boxes ( NOT PATCHED ) and i got to about 206 dwellers in less then a few hours of just messing around you can thank me later but don’t forget to reset the time or u might screw up your time and date so just keep it in mind
