Whatever "falling out" Iwerks and Disney had was temporary and Iwerks returned and very happily worked for Disney for many years afterwards. He didn't accuse Disney of taking the credit for his work either. Walt Disney CREATED and DESIGNED Mickey Mouse, but Disney himself wasn't as good of an animator as Iwerks, so Disney had Iwerks do the majority of the animation. This in no way constitutes screwing over Iwerks or taking the undeservedly taking the credit. This issue is almost always misrepresented. Iwerks did leave to try to create his own studio, but it didn't last long, the company lost investors and eventually folded. In 1940, Iwerks went back to Disney and worked on many of their biggest films. Iwerks eventually ended his career with Disney in 1971. Apparently he liked working for Disney enough to do it for about 3 more decades (1940-1971)

I was scrolling down to make this very comment. Well said. Iwerks is a animation pioneer, going on to create many of the innovations for Disney that would make their cartoons stand out over all the rest. Disney and Iwerks were partners in the early days, collaborating on the Alice and the Oswald shorts. Disney was the idea man, the director and the business man. Iwerks was the animator. I don't think anyone knows who actually first drew Mickey, but I would not at all be surprised to find that it was Iwerks. I do not think the two men actually had a falling out. I think Iwerks just went off to create his own studio. When that failed Disney welcomed him back and gave him a very important and senior position. The remained together as friends until their death.

I never believed the anti-Semitism rumour. Though I never did any in-depth research, for all the references to his anti-Semitism, I never once heard anyone recount anything he ever did or anything he ever said that would support the lie. Another huge myth these days is that Walt said "If we can dream it, we can do it!" or "if you can dream it, you can do it!". Walt never said this at all to anyone's knowledge. The quote was coined by ad agency copywriter Sheralyn Silverstein , working on an ad for General Electric. No, not even Tom Fitzgerald coined it. This is a disneyland fact but the flags on mainstreet is wrongly said that they put 48 stars on the flag so they do not have to pull the flags down due to federal law. The law though says that any previous or similar US flags must be put down every night. The real reason is that mainstreet is based in the late 1890s or early 1900s when the US had 48 stars. So why doesn't disneyland put those flags down? Because it would cost a lot of money and the govt doesnt enforce the law. Why did this false fact come around? Because disney doesn't want to piss of military personal or vets who aren't bothered enough to look up the law. Honestly I'm a USMC vet and I really don't care if any private business doesn't put down the flag every night but it's pretty nice that disney does the ceremony everyday.

Disney also helped Iwerks's career by getting him to get out of Kansas City to California which definitely jump-started his career as an animator. It should also be remembered that during WWII that Disney was one of the most active in propagandists during the war. He even produced a film called Victory Thru Air Power which put forth the concept of Strategic Bombing; not exactly something that benefited the Nazis.

Some years ago, I happened across an unauthorized biography that alleged Disney was not born in 1901 - but 1891. In it, his birth mother was said to have been of Mexican/Spanish descent and Walt was the product of a tryst his father had had with this woman while working as a carpenter on the 1893 Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. Apparently, Disney - during his lifetime - was never able to furnish a birth certificate verifying his date of birth - and to some, he apparently looked darker skinned enough than his other Disney siblings. Outside of this book, I've not been able to find any other independent source to back up these findings, so I dunno. I suppose it's the peculiarities of the man, his art and his organization that spawn such speculative details ... 🤔

Oh how much the cartooning has come a far away. I didn't know much of Walt Disney in Finland but I loved Donald Duck & had the cartoon magazine coming weekly at our childhood home very long time ago. You can buy Donald Duck comic books about every store & kiosks over there and I was so sadden when I got to USA and here they are nowhere to be found. The old cartoons were by far the best ever 💗

The Donald Duck comic books have their following in the U.S.; they can be found in comic book specialty shops. The best-known artist and writer of those books was Carl Barks (1901-2000), who is also credited as having created Scrooge McDuck. It's interesting that reading those books with adult eyes I find them intriguing and not at all embarrassing kid stuff. A head concussion that turned Donald into a super-genius was even recorded (well, one panel anyway) in Morrison and Boyd's college textbook on organic chemistry.

My mom was personally asked by Disney to work for him as an artist. She did not go. When I was involved years later in film and video, I asked her about it. She said: "I had a bad feeling.". As one who idolized him, I asked his male animators about him. He DID treat his female workers, in particular, like garbage. Since I started our Dalmatian rescue after Orlando was flooded with Dals to be euthanized thanks to his 101 Dalmatian films in the mid-1990's, I have learned much. He had more animals killed than ANY other producer from ALL of his animal films.. It proves that no idol is perfect, regardless of his talent. It is funny how that PBS documentary scripter has changed her tune.

This guy has some of his facts wrong as well. The narrative about Waldo and Mickey is incorrect. Waldo wasn't "taken by a former business partner". He was specifically designed FOR Universal BY Walt Disney. It was a contractual agreement; there was no "taking" involved. But Walt liked that character and wanted to develop a similar character that Disney actually owned.

He was never in the Navy. He was once in the Red Cross, as a teenager, at the end of WWI. At one point, he was court marshalled because he and another guy were given an errand that took them to some outpost or something, and the guy told Walt to wait there and he'd be back after completing the mission, I guess he was older or more superior idk. But anyway this guy then went on a 3 day bender leaving Walt at this post. After 2 days, Walt finally abandoned his post and walked into town where he got a room and slept for an entire day. He was court marshalled for leaving his post. But once he told them what had happened, they dropped the charges. That is where the dishonorable discharge myth actually comes from. If you want, you can look it up literally... anywhere. Google is free.

Hate to say it but it was commonplace back then to poke fun at racial stereotypes. Check out some early Warner Brothers cartoons and you'll see some egregious blackface puns. Nobody's hands are clean in this regard.
@annien.1727
@annien.1727 4 ай бұрын
Hey, Song of the South was NOT racist! It's NOT about racism or slavery! It's about a loving friendship between a black man named Uncle Remus and a young white boy. He tells him stories about Br'er Rabbit and his antics with Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear which contain valuable life lessons. Also note that the film takes place during the Reconstruction era when slavery was ABOLISHED. Even the man who played Uncle Remus, James Baskett defended the film and his character, saying, "I believe that certain groups are doing my race more harm in seeking to create dissension, than can ever possibly come out of the Song of the South." In fact, James Baskett was the first African-American man to win an Academy Award for his performance as Uncle Remus. He played as the fat crow in Dumbo, and Song of the South was the last film Baskett played a role in before he sadly passed away. If Walt was truly racist, he would NEVER have cast Baskett to play Uncle Remus or any other black man, for that matter. Walt may not be perfect, but he's just as brilliant as they come.

@@SG-BLAST While it's true that Ub Iwerks did, in fact, play a role in co-creating Mickey Mouse, it was Walt Disney who did come up with Mickey's personality as well as his overall character. I believe he did draw some sketches of Mickey but they did not look good and asked his friend Ub to redraw them. Ub created the friendlier Mickey design we all know and love today and animated a lot of the earlier Mickey cartoons. Both Walt and Ub created Mickey, so let's stop buying into this revisionist history.
