My staffie was diagnosed today as having a false pregnancy. I never knew of this condition. She has been moody, nesting, not eating well, and collecting her stuffed animals. Dr prescribed her with anti-nausea medicine and meds to dry up the milk production... Yes, she's lactating! She whimpers and cries on and off all day...my poor baby!

when i was a baby. my family dog treated me as her baby and was like my guard dog. she suffered a false pregnecy and even when she passed away she had the motherly effection to me and my family. I always felt bad for her tho for her having swollen and stretched nips for the longest time

I have 1 female Staffordshire terrier and 1 female jack Russell terrier and a male jack Russell terrier, I bred my 2 jacks and now months later the puppies are now very healthy and 6 weeks old and momma isn't producing milk nor does she want to feed them BUT! MY FEMALE STAFFORDSHIRE STARTED PRODUCING MILK AND FEEDING THEM I was dumbfounded honestly and the puppies love her, and momma seems to appreciate it since it keeps the pups off her. Is this common or ever heard off?? Maybe one female dogs hormones influenced another dogs hormones? Their heat cycles had also synced up

This was so helpful.. Today 4/21/04 I just discovered while playing with my pup that my 1 year old female, toy poodle is lactating? I always wondered why her boobs looked quite puffy after her ministerial cycle..Anyhow when I petted her I curiously squeezed 1 then 2,3,4 of her teats and white liquid came out of all??? i'm guessing is Milk? I was shock, confused then worried because she goes outside freely to peepee & poopie then comes back quick ...so i'm still unsure if she is pregnant or her body is just thinking she is. if you have a male dog and the female is in heat the male will go crazy and be aggressive and it will drive you crazy im telling you ever since i got my pit spayed my chi mix doesn't even worry about her anymore ... it only cost about 150 to spay and its cheaper to neuter but in females it reduces the risk of mammary gland cancer later on in life

I think my girl had either a fake pregnancy or miscarriage. She would have been 70 to 74 days by now but a little over a week ago she looked to be in labor with her second littler but wasn’t very big her first litter she was huge and had 9 anyways her breasts were leaking a lot of milk and still have milk if squeezed now but she doesn’t really look pregnant and would be way over due by now but she was nesting everything panting. I left came back and never found blood or anything no swollen parts nothing she’s not bleeding I do know she mated twice when the neighbor couldn’t control his dog from jumping my fence AGAIN. I have solved that now but she seems fine and Health idk what to think

Only a vet check can truly tell you. The vet would either check the levels of relaxin or perform an ultrasound.

I'm not... that well-informed on canine anatomy, and additionally, my dog is spayed. She was at the youngest age we were recommended (idk when unfortunately) but I've never seen... her vagina? Really great, great info. I am trying to decide if my dog is pregnant or if she is having a phantom pregnancy. I am fearful she is actually pregnant. Such bad timing. Her appointment to be fixed is next week ... been waiting for two months since it is through humane society (which I am thankful for) and even though we keep her in the house or kennel at various times of day (especially when she is in heat) she got loose one evening and I believe had a tryst. Stayed gone over an hour smh. Can you just believe the timing? No fair lol I am praying she isn't pregnant because I cannot bring myself to have her fixed right now if she is. It will have to wait. But I also can't bear the thought of having to trust people to be good to her puppies. Sigh. She is a boxer/lab/pit mix and is built like a boxer with a thin hind end ... she is still thin but her breasts are really large. She is being very affectionate and more chilled out. The Vet was not being inappropriate, invasive or perverse! Some people don't know much about doggie anatomy and/or signs and causes of lactation, so the Vet made a brief educational video to show people what to look for, such as inflammation of vulva or enlargement of mammary glands, and to encourage doggie parents to become familiar with their dog's anatomy so that they will be able to spot any changes that could indicate pregnancy, pseudopregnancy (false pregnancy) or tumor. Female dogs will naturally guard their vulva, once their heat cycle has ended, which is why she seemed uncomfortable. If the Vet had avoided actually touching the dog's teet or vulva, then he couldn't very well expect others to feel comfortable becoming familiar with their own pet's anatomy.
