@ The channel has covered movepools specifically and not the four move slots syndrome itself. Four move slots syndrome refers to the Pokémon in question having numerous moves demanding for a spot in the final set, but being limited by there only being four move slots in total. Infernape is a notorious example of this because it has mixed attacking stats that let it attack on both sides of the spectrum, fantastic STAB options for damage (Flare Blitz, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, Overheat, Close Combat, Focus Blast), priority attacks (Mach Punch, Vacuum Wave), utility moves (Encore, Stealth Rock, Swords Dance, Nasty Plot, Slack Off), and incredible coverage (Stone Edge, Thunder Punch, Hidden Power Ice/Electric, Grass Knot, Earthquake, U-Turn, Gunk Shot). If Infernape was able to do even half of these things at once, it would be almost impossible to answer safely, but being limited to only four options means that no matter what selection it picks, there will always be a counter. The concept of having so many options available, but being limited to set restrictions also extends to abilities and items. Using Infernape as an example again, it loves the boosts to power and longevity that items give it, but it is forced to give up the benefits of another item it could use in exchange for choosing a specific set. In DP OU, if Nape gives up on its Life Orb or Choice Band in exchange for an Expert Belt or Leftovers, it deals considerably less damage against neutral targets like Zapdos and Rotom while missing out on knockouts against specific Jirachi and Heatran sets. If Nape doesn’t run Scarf, it fails to outrun Latias, Gengar, and Starmie, all of which can switch in against it and force it out. If it runs a choice item, it loses the ability to set up against walls like Nidoqueen that completely stuff it and cannot switch moves to efficiently check Heatran or Skarmory as reliably. The four moveslot system as a whole covers the high amount of opportunity cost that a player must consider when committing themselves to run certain sets of a particular Pokémon. This is a key part of balancing the game and it’s what keeps a lot of top tier Pokémon balanced. Broken attacks like Fishious Rend and Rage Fist stand out so much because they straight up beat opponents that are designed to counter them, effectively mitigating the need for coverage and freeing up their set options. Additionally, abilities that essentially grant Pokémon free items or broken passive effects are responsible for a huge part of power creep across new generations. Galarian Darmanitan is a perfect example as to how practically getting rid of this opportunity cost of only holding one item can make the game considerably more broken and unbalanced.
