really well thought out rig, you did a really good job, the both of you. I'm 83 and in a house that I built to retire in but after 3 strokes in 72 hours I need to get out and enjoy the Island and be able to see my kids when I want to, just drive to them. A 19 passenger Van with wheelchair entry would suit my needs. I have to have a cabinet to house the tools that I need to take where ever I go. with the lift entry I can get my wheelchair in and out by myself and use beach areas to shower and use toilets, plus I have many friends that I can stay with now and then to visit. I'm a publisher of a local magazine so I have an income plus my income from social security, I'll do fine and like the adventure that's going to come my way.

Things I’ve learned because of the longer video: 1) Plan for a pantry of sorts. 2) Get the right instant water heater for low flow because of the nature of the bus. 3) Be aware that self-built composting toilets can have issues like smell and be difficult to clean vs their premanufactured counterparts. 4) If you don’t do a roof raise, something is needed so taller people can shower in a bathroom near the curve of the bus roof. 5) If you have a wheelchair/emergency door in the bathroom, you can turn your bathroom into a “mud room” so you don’t get your bus dirty. 6) If you have kids, take the time to maximize the space they have to themselves. No matter if they’re full time living or not so they feel comfortable. 7) Consider hOw a space can me multifunctional so you can maximize the options in the bus. 8) Consider making things changeable because as you are on the road, things may need to be altered for the most comfortability. 9) You can use Amazon mattresses for bunk beds, couch cushions, etc if you plan on DIYing anything so you know your cushions are soft enough. 10) The engine cover for a rear engine bus can be used as a multipurpose space. 11) Plan for closet space. 12) It would be wise to do your best to balance weight on the bus. 13) If you have a rear engine bus, look for one with doors to access the sides of the engine for easier maintenance. 14) When looking into tow vehicles, ones that tow easily and hook and unhook easily are very important for quick access when needed. 15) Consider a roof deck and consider the size that would best maximize the space. Imagine what you can learn in an hour long video. Longer videos may seem annoying to people who aren’t serious, but to those of us who are seriously considering this lifestyle, understanding these small details will help us in the future to build a bus that works well for our needs without spending massive amounts of money for contractors. It’s vital to learn from other people’s mistakes and successes when it comes to something like this. Thank you for releasing detailed videos so I can best plan out my own skoolie in the future.

Learning what people do to accommodate taller people is great. I saw in another video that they just put a bench in their shower for the husband to sit on so he can do so comfortably without having to hunch over.

I don’t normally even watch all the way through most of these videos because they spent too much time on themselves usually and not on how they made it. Here they really explain how and why they did everything and even mistakes that they made. I totally agree that this longer video gives great information and insight for those dreaming about making their own bus conversion. I actually watched to the end.

What a useful man to have do the DIY! I've seen it said that you need to live in the space for a while in order to see what doesn't work and remedy it. I so wish we were able to park a Ford van on our drive to work on it, let alone a 40ft bus! I always feel that these buses make the transition to mobile living alot easier. You can fit everything in that you need convenience-wise, and at each new location, you have enough floor space outside to play and run around with ease. Btw, many travellers put their plants along the windowsills that have a big enough recess or surround. That would save you popping them in the sink when you're on the move. HTH

I love your video, a lot of creative ideas for storage. I was wondering because it is sooo long, do you have to have a special license to drive something this big? I was also noticing around your fridge you have a lot of wasted space. There are very narrow racks on wheels made for campers and motor homes that utilize space for can good, juice jugs etc. That may help organize your food pantry and then the other places you used for food could be allocated for other items. Way to go and live your best life. Wish I could visit people who do this.
@BricksofHappiness3 жыл бұрын
HI there! So sorry it took this long to get back to you. We missed your comment somehow. No special license needed however, it depends on what state you are from. Also, I drove semis for years so it was easy transition. The fridge box does have a ton of room. When we built the kitchen we didn't have our fridge yet and weren't sure what size we were going with. So we built for a full-size. The whole box is being remolded to fit the size we went with and adding in storage under it and next to it. Great observation!

Hopefully you did a burn outside with that stove because I hear there’s some strong poisonous odors that came off the first time people burned their tiny Woodstove. 💕 it looks wonderful I’m so jealous.
@BricksofHappiness3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. The plan was definitely to do an outside burn first. Unfortunately, when it arrived the glass was broken and we were traveling. I had to install it so that we could stay on the road. We did the burn inside but with all of the doors and windows open and multiple fans going. I just held my breath and popped in every once in a while to check the temp. It actually worked a lot better than I thought it was going to.

I'm sure you've found out by now, they say to burn them before putting it in to get the paint smell burnt off.

The curtain is too close to it and where does it vent out.
@_firelocks_4 жыл бұрын
@@s.z.6200 curtains are easily moved, hopefully it’s an easy change and they can still get some privacy. Also he said he is storing the vent tubing in his daughter’s bunk while she is not on the rig. He said that he will be venting it out the window, if I remember correctly.
@BricksofHappiness3 жыл бұрын
@@_firelocks_ Yes, the curtain moves towards the kitchen and that window is tinted dark enough. If we are somewhere that closed off privacy is needed/wanted in the living room we don't have the stove going anyway. The vent does go out the window and works great. You can see it on our channel :) Thanks for watching!

That is so pretty! Do you have an escape door in your bedroom? If so, I missed it.

We have a hatch in the bedroom, an emergency window on the side and the rear window is an emergency window. Door in the bathroom and another window in the kitchen.

Love your kitchen!! Great job on the build!! We just started and finished the demo. How long did it take you guys to build your bus?
@BricksofHappiness4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That’s kind of a trick question. We have touched on it in other videos. The quick answer is 6 months. 3 for body work (rack, belly storage, shower floor drop, door, etc...) and 3 months for interior build.

where did he find the tool to open the doors to the motor?

You can get them at any bus supply. Mine was given to me. A large flathead works just as well and is multipurpose though. I use both.

We went through multiple failed private buys for multiple reasons. Finally just wanted to look at a dang bus and went to AAA BUS and met Tony. He is amazing and we've been good friends ever since.

What is the name of the mattress?
@annalanier14504 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure he said it was a Zinus mattress. They are supposed to be pretty good. If you Google it, there's a review of 2020 mattresses and it was the last expensive of the top-rated mattresses (it rated #13).
@BricksofHappiness4 жыл бұрын
Yes it is a Zinus. We actually liked the one we made the couch out of better but they don’t make that one anymore. We still love ours though. King for under $400

I ask, and I ask, and I ask, but never get an answer. So here goes again. Since this is your home, what happens if your home breaks down and has to be in a shop for days? Also, do you never get mice in a bus? Just things that I want to know--but no one has the decency to answer. thanks. Nice design and the counter tops are great. Do you have any worries about having your family so close in proximity to that liquid propane water heater? Again, just asking, not judging, I seriously want to know. thanks LOve the Bunk designs! Cool.

Hi there! We’re happy to answer any questions you have! Our home has broken down and we’ve spent nights on the side of the road and on family property. We were able to repair it both times. We did have to leave it at a shop once but that was before we moved out of our house. We have had two mice in the 3 years we’ve been living in it. One we caught and the other our cat caught. Can’t beat a good bus cat! We made sure to pipe weld our propane lines not just tape them. We also have a sniffer to check the fittings now and then. The bus also has a propane detector along with carbon monoxide and smoke. We also turn it off when traveling usually.

To touch on the breakdown part a bit more. We have had multiple skoolie friends that have had breakdowns and been able to stay in the lot at the shop they had work on it. Some have also had to get a hotel etc. We have also had friends breakdown and have to park their bus permanently vs paying to repair it. It depends on what it needs and if it’s worth it. Buy your engine trans combo strategically and try to save money for when it needs love. They all do and the bigger they are the more they cost. Learning to do your own repairs is invaluable. Thanks for watching! We post weekly if you’re interested 😁
