Nearly two years after 19 students and two teachers were killed by a gunman at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, the families of the victims reached a $2 million settlement with the city. Victims' families on Wednesday also announced a $500 million federal lawsuit against 92 officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety who were part of the failed response by law enforcement on the day of the shooting, along with the school's former principal and the district's former police chief. Lilia Luciano has the latest.

$2 million isn't scraping the surface of what each family lost

@@monicahill9741 It is a tiny town and a tiny county. It is their fault since they avoided training officers with the funds and program approved by the state, but they don't have much money

It's not $2m per family. Most of that goes to lawyers who fought the case. The family will be lucky to see a dollar

Nope. There's no accountability here. Insurance is paying out the $2 million. The city isn't paying a penny outside of their normal insurance premiums. It's simply business as usual.

Do you know how little $2,000,000 is? The government spends $800,000 per second on the military. They settled for less than four seconds of government spending.

No amount of money can settle this. Those responsible will never be able to redeem themselves. This will be a permanent stain on the Uvalde Law enforcement and the School District.

I wonder about the first responders still living in the city that they failed so badly. Are they able to live and heal there or have they moved on?

2 million split between 19 students. That's just 105k per each family. That's about as much as a single year salary for a computer programmer. That's pathetic that, that is how much a life costs in this country. And it hurts the city not the cowardly police that got off the hook for what they didn't do. They should have a percentage taken out of their pensions. Then they would remember what they did. This is idiotic how broken our systems are in this country.

Hope it covers the funerals, that town must be bankrupt. Notice when it's the citizens owed the government doesn't want to cough up the money, but the other way around? Oh get ready to either pay out the a#$ or go to jail.

Tax payer money, not from the police or government. The parents are paying themselves off, watch taxes go up for that city.

I’m not sure how it’s the city’s fault…or the school districts fault…that this insane tragedy occurred?? Yes, the police were inept and scared. But why is the reaction always to sue? Money won’t bring these babies back. If you bankrupt the police department and school district…will they be able to continue to provide services? I understand their need for closure, but that happens in church and families and with therapy - not lawsuits and blame.

It’s not about the money, it’s about setting precedent for the ones who failed to do the right thing. Since they can’t be criminally charged, they can be civilly. If this happened to you, would you be asking the same question?
