When Hohenheim drew the fifth laboratory circle in the flashback, that was him figuring out Father's plot about 13 years before Hughes did. He discovered that Father was trying to make a philosopher's stone using the whole country, and discovering this is what set him out on his journey away from his family.

Also, just because a story hasn't clearly confirmed something doesn't mean it's a spoiler. We know that specific circle, we know it's currently being traced over the country, we know who is tracing it, and we know Hohenheim and Father knew each other based on what Father said when he met Ed. We have all the informations allowing to us to make that obvious deduction, as opposed to previous mysteries that would be still theories until confirmed. A story is allowed to confirm something by implication instead of explaining it out to us. For example, the anime hasn't shown us Hohenheim revealing he's immortal to Trisha, yet based on their conversation and Trisha's composure about the topic, it's clear she has known for a while.

well the setting seems to be somewhere around 1920's-40's judging by vehicles and weapons so they would be pretty common

Did find data for phones in Germany, but in 1900 the US had about 1 phone per 1000 people. I assume it is a bit more common than that, since the Elric's have one, but they were probably upper middle class. Same for Winfrey's family. In all the rural/remote areas where we've been seeing Hohenheim? I ain't saying he never failed to call, just pointing out there were most likely plenty of times he couldn't. We know his sense of time is skewed...
